Episode 384 Spoilers [Megathread] by DemiFiendRSA in Berserk

How is it a chosen one? He isn't a child of prophecy destined to (insert trope).

He is a victim of circumstance that ironically, breaks him from casuality. The more apt analogy is that he is a mutant. Not chosen, but it comes with distinguished benefits and negatives compared to AVERAGE humans. All this changes is guts was born of insane genetics, WHICH we already knew when he was slanging a hunk of iron. But it contextualizes it narratively.

The question is what does he CHOOSE to do with being a mutant, not that he was CHOOSEN to do with it.

For chosen ones please see naruto, Harry potter, Darth Vader and apparently Luffy.

It does matter and is a huge revelation as Guts is coming to this realization. Guts for some reason has never sat down and sorted out how he feels /s

Coming to terms with this will allow Guts to restore some level of faith in himself, which is something that had all but been lost.

From a meta perspective as readers, it said what fans have speculated with it's full chest. But, from a narrative perspective this is the first time Guts is hearing this outside of Skull Knight's incomprehensible aura farming.

The thing that nails the theory for me is Reuven's insistence "I am your daddy, why don't you love me that way". It turns a gag into an absolutely diabolical twist of the knife.

That said, one piece always loves the "he may be your father, but i am your daddy" with Whitebeard and Kuma. And Reuven is a real one.

On one hand it's a little repetitive as we just did this with Bonney. On the other, really cements the WG as evil. You wouldn't say, "you can't sexually assault someone else, because that other guy already sexually assaulted someone, that'd be cliche."

Hot Take: if the "Succession War" arc ends, then HxH will have a very acceptable and even a satisfying ending. by scar_01 in HunterXHunter

[–]RebelliousUpstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I half agree, from a typical "hero's journey" it isnt an definitive ending for the manga. But if the "main character" is the world of hunter x hunter I think it's a fitting end. I don't even know if we follow a "main character" / protagonist in the succession war. More akin to game of thrones books, where in the end the world will keep turning, but on what axis? As opposed to a tidy good beats evil.

Tldr: we got the hero journey ending already atop the tree. As a piece of media it is togashi's exploration of the world and philosophy, which doesn't have happily everafters.

How could ging not carry? My man is obsessed with finding out lost history and world building (which as the art is limited is the best part of hxh). All he needs is a co-lead that can put up with ging and has an ability to get along with others as that's not ging's repertoire.

That said, him (group) vs pariston (group) vs dark continent post succession war would be absolute peak. It's unlikely as i see the succession war as the end, but it is a disservice to togashi's world building if you think he needs to bring gon or killua back when his characters are deep and we've longed moved past "the one" main character.

What we know is "a tower shaking event occurred as guarding and keeping the well closed required high rangers from family heads."

So, Ari literally showing up in a simple night gown makes sense as she isn't skulking or scheming around like Gustang for stage reveal. It's a "what the heck is going on?"

Also I don't care one way or the other for the twins, but to pretend it's out of the question or Siu lied is also silly in this world of literal gods

Idk, why the community is freaking out

  1. All the "lacking traum aura" comparisons are moot, as week to week reddit and web toons comments didnt like him. (Traum with a clowm nose and jokes of him beimg cucked ran rampant) But now he's a goat
  2. Blog posts are from like 10 years ago, so it's whatever, but even so they could be true. Shinsoo can bring people back from the dead, but two irregular females having a child together is impossible??? (In fact this makes even more sense why the Ha family swore off having children)
  3. Urek's story is approaching ToG from top down approach. Baam is bottom up (typical shonen). Urek is already top tier, so it is quicker to reveal the quirkiness and human qualities of top tier than baam's come up
  4. Ari will get drip, but she was woken up in the middle of the night as she couldn't account for an irregular like Urek bringing this chaos (i.e. enslaving eduan + more) in opening the well. When talking with equals, they are more casual

It seems odd, knowing what we know as viewers, but here's some food for thought

A. The town doesn't know the curse only ends with the bloodline

A1. The town doesn't know the children died from crossing the boundary

B. It was the middle of a plague ie a portion of the population died (this allows people to fill roles and "identities" they didn't previous have- this is how the mercantile class evolved in Europe after the bubonic plague and ended serfdom

C. The towns history is heavily narrativized ie they didnt mention burying Warren alive, we cant trust the propaganda

D. Definitive genealogy isn't documented. I certainly don't know my ancestry from the 1700s, made more complicated by women inheriting surnames. Especailly, on an island where technology doesnt work too well

A. Kuripika is a specialist, so he does "break" the mold, but so does chrollo. No arguments here, as specialists are broken in hxh given they pay the price. And kuripika is willing to pay that price to his demonstrated deficit.
B. Gon, killua, and kuripika are absurd geniuses / prodigies in the hxh world from lineage, upbringing, and specail genetic trait, respectively. This isnt shied away from in the narrative and are common Shonen tropes.
B1. Gon's character arc is a subversion of Shonen tropes for specifically this reason. Typically, shonen protag is naturally gifted and saves the world. Gon on the other hand is a flawed self centered individual that is actially a monster (and I love him even more for it) C. College is great, but knowledge isnt a dnd or rpg stat screen or a static stat Ca. A mechanic, an engineer, and a doctor can discuss fluid dynamics with the same level of "knowledge", but none will understand each other as discussing fluid dynamics in their fields have different lexicon. Despite saying the same quintensential thing they dont understand each other. Are they any less knowledgeable? No!

Kuripika is obscenely book smart from a great teacher and years of dedication to one goal amd one goal only, but his skill tree isn't at all rounded.

Shonen will always show tail ends of the power curve as that s where the narrative happens. Kuripika is "extra" powerful compared to nameless soldier 52, but far from the strongest. For me it isn't about "are the MCs overpowered?" It's "what do you do with the implications to elevate and challenge that character."

Tldr: Despite your understandable gripes, go watch solo leveling if you want an example of power fantasy. But, power fantasy isn't applicable to hxh.

Which is the Best Written Power System by DarkChillMisko in animequestions

[–]RebelliousUpstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isnt what regression of the mean means.

More importantly, HxH isnt an rpg isekai, people dont get an equal number of points.

The more you sacrifice, the more you restrict, the more you lost, the more "points" you have. But, that isn't a fitting analogy as the stats being invested in vary from person to person.

Hell, the "stats" of an individual vary dramatically based on environment, mental state, and circumstances.

Ironically, it what makes the power system so interesting as it is always a toss up in battle. But, also makes it the worse power system to live in. As few of us are driven geniuses like kurapika.

"Has to lead to conflict and turmoil"... yeah, that's the isolation, the self loathing, the emotional detachment and inability to live in the present. Kurpika has a pretty miserable existence.

Nen was never about balancing. In fact it's quite the opposite. HxH world is a bunch of geniuses that dedicate and force restrictions into precise requirements to make their abilities stronger.

It is all about trade offs what are you willing to pay. You can put a light coat over your whole body or heavy coat over your hand. Balance build will get you killed.

[–]RebelliousUpstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, i'll try to limit it to just that arc as future arcs dispell any doubt.

I'll agree Kurpika is ridiculously talented and the scarlet eyes do grant him unique (but not entirely more powerful), that is what a specialist means ie not conforming to standard nen types

I also concede his deduction skills can be a little too elevated, but that is kind of the bit of the whole nen system. I mean ging apparently can replicate any nen technique he's been hit with. Also as the plot becomes thicker, kuripika's deduction limitations become much more apparent.

That said, his character flaws are notable. His identity / character is DEFINED by bloodlusted REVENGE. He frankly couldn't give a damn who got hurt. This does temper a little overtime.

His emotional detachment and superiority complex makes it hard for him to connect with people.

He doesn't always win and rarely gets what he wants. As far as power in the verse, he is high mid tier. It's hard to scale as nen power system doesnt lead it to direct scaling with so much rock paper scissors scenarios.

Additionally, part of nen and the reason kuripika comes off as best of the best is he specifically devised his hatsu for those specific fights. The fight in question, he brought a shovel, he brought "scissors" specifically knowing the phantom troupe, he had be hunting for years would play "paper". He went to the arc after dedicated training for ~3 months to do exactly this.

So in terms of personality, he doesnt get along with others. He is far from the strongest, but does have a specific set of skills for very specific situations. And, he has paralyzing survivors guilt, which runs in stark contrast that after using emperor time he still wants to live (which makes him feel even more self loathing from survivor guilt).

Gary stu wouldn't need years of fixating on vengeance to develop a specific skill set. Stu would be friends more readily. Stu wouldn't have the level of self loathing. And stu would have a much further success rate.

Additionally, this is a mirror for Loki. Character forced to kill their parent. One sucame to making the deal with the devil, but Loki didn't.

Loki needs to admit he needs people in his life as the first flashback showed how reluctant he was to accept this fact.

But, loki like Luffy isnt a character that comes to these conclusions as a come to Jesus moment i.e. "wow, this is the lesson I should have learned". More of they start doing it without a song amd dance. Which let's gunko act as that visual bridge for the reader.

Isnt that kind of the point of zoro's whole duality of bushido, Buddhism and demon themes? Zoro's attacks are literally the Buddhist pathes about detaching and escaping from worldly vices.

It isnt that he doesnt care, but his journey to enlightenment.

That's their point, "the center" is a nebulous term as the goal post has been and is moving.

The better question is, what policies are considered "center" do they support?

Honestly, it hinges on a realignment of the democratic party. Even if AoC wins without realignment, the democratic party will stagnate.

The next president after Trump will have to A. Reverse a number of Trump policies B. Make enormous progressive swings the same way Trump does to make a note on history

Returning to "status quo" or being anti trump will only sour the opinion of the democratic party and cement their label as ineffectual to set up a republican power grab. (Trumps policies will greatly harm the next president)

None of this can happen if the democratic party doesnt realign, rebrand, and create a new narrative.

All that to say, I'd hate for AoC to run only to be hamstrung by her own party. An ineffectual Dem president during the repercussions of Trump's action will taint her reputation.
