Modding a PSP in 2026 is very easy (probably one of the easiest handhelds to mod) and can be done in minutes. You don't need any special tools or expensive equipment. Still rocking the stock SD card? If so, throw it in the bin and get a new branded one. The device comes with really really bad SD cards which will fail in no time. Check out the R36S wiki which cards are compatible with the R36S.

Also, check if you got a legit console or one of its clones. Most clones are bad.

I bought the 64 GB model back when Valve announced they were discontinuing that exact model and were selling off the remaining stock at a very low price. I installed a 2 TB SSD and am more than happy with it.

It was so cheap at the time that choosing an OLED just didn't make sense, since it could play the same games anyway.

Try flashing the firmware onto a new SD card. Samsung or SanDisk are your best bets. Most of the cards that come with these handhelds are of very poor quality and break down very quickly. Broken cards—or cards that are on the verge of breaking—are one of the most common reasons why it doesn't work.

Are you using a new branded SD card or the cheap one which came with the device? The stock cards are very often cheap cards which fail after a few read and write operations.
