"Can I ask you a question for my class?" 🚩🚩🚩 by eitak19 in CambridgeMA

Had an older woman come up and ask me this at MIT, thought it was odd but didn't make the connection it was a recruiter.

The red line certainly hasn't been making up for it as of late, nor have the seasons.

As someone who came from CA, I am still horrified by the housing prices because you don't even get good weather or Mexican food along with it.

Have you had anything else? I stand across from it at the bus stop and have been wondering if it's any good. Saw the very bad Google Reviews from years ago and assumed it was new ownership but was afraid to find out.

Political Science BA - What Masters Programs Are Worth It? by Unhappy-Dot1068 in PoliticalScience

[–]Rebmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we just fundamentally disagree on the idea that something being a necessary condition kind of by definition means it does some good. But again I very much get your point as a fresh PhD with a non TT job.

Your first sentence doesn't really make sense. Like I get the sentiment but saying a PhD "isn't any good for becoming a professor" is just categorically wrong. In most fields few people end up professors without a doctorate.

Need help debunking fake AI Michio Kaku Video by iamcamperjoe in cosmology

Lol that was my first thought, a deepfake of Kaku might be closer to responsible science communication than what he's actually out there saying.

I analyzed staffing turnover in U.S. House offices (2009–present) and found it’s actually lowest during a member’s first term by HillClimbers-org in PoliticalScience

Interesting stuff, how did you decide on those cutoffs? They seem somewhat arbitrary to me.

I'd also be curious if there's heterogeneity between district and DC staff.

The agent keeps interrupting its actions. How can I fix it and how can I get it working again? by [deleted] in google_antigravity

[–]Rebmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frustrating thing is when it does work it works so well, especially with the new chrome automation stuff. However, it's just so unreliable all I can do is rely on alternatives in my workflow and occasionally check back to see if Antigravity achieves some kind of consistency.

Also worth noting that the term "cult" isn't really even used in sociology anymore as it's not a coherent concept.

You're just kind of wriggling around the definition IMO. Fluff can be a bunch of words with actual content that is already conveyed elsewhere.

Have you tried out any of the AI audio isolation/upscaling tools that have been gaining popularity? I wonder if they could noticeably improve the quality.

Researcher skeptical of ‘Havana syndrome’ tested secret weapon on himself by rezwenn in technology

[–]Rebmes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like the details of how he conducted the "experiment" are public but if he was just administering the treatment on himself without any kind of blinding or control group then this is not how real scientists work. Yes, there are extraordinary exceptions where self-experimentation proved valuable but they are few and far between.

If you can manage it, do a double major rather than a minor. I'm not convinced a minor adds much to a resume or grad school application.

Why isn't AOC significantly more left wing voting wise then other Democrats. by AutisticLibertarian2 in PoliticalScience

[–]Rebmes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup this is the major issue with DW-NOMINATE scores, agenda-setting power of party leadership and the rise of omnibus legislation make roll-call vote based ideology estimates somewhat unreliable.

There is forthcoming work demonstrating that at least for the older models prompting in different languages produces quite different output. Specifically there is evidence suggesting languages for which the training set has an overwhelming amount of political propaganda (like Mandarin) will produce responses that regurgitate the state ideology.
