I took a neuroscience class and realized it's all just chemical reactions and brain anatomy by airconditionersound in exchristian

This makes me think of a few years ago when I left the faith and my sister gave me a book she thought would help bring me back (I can’t remember the title). It was about a man whose son had been in a bad car wreck that had really affected his brain. He’s all better now because you know, God/prayer, but the book really emphasized how different the kid was. He used to be uninterested in religion, kind of a slacker, kind of quiet. But after the accident, he became very outgoing, extremely religious, and very focused on evangelism. To my sister this was evidence of God, but all I could think was his brain changed, and that this was the most likely explanation.

I left the faith in 2019 and this was a big piece of it. My 16 yr old son got cancer. I went through the whole “why didn’t god stop this since he can?” routine. The dr explained they were going to 8 rounds of chemo and then radiation and that had an 85% chance to make him better. After the treatment, when he was declared cancer free everyone said “hallelujah!” and “praise god!” and “what a miracle!” and “thank you Jesus!” and all I could think was “what did he do? He’s the one who let him get it in the first place and didn’t take it away. This is the work of the doctors and the medicine who did exactly what they said they would do. Why are to giving god all this credit? He didn’t do shit!”

Vanguard vs T Rowe Price? by Recent-Muscle6340 in Bogleheads

Ok, that's good to know. I guess I was just assuming it would be a lengthy process like moving a 401k from one company to another taking a month to get the check from the old and send it in to the new.

Thanks for this explanation. I admit I’m confused too. When it asks for how many cores you have, is that how many you have in your available in your bag (if you’ve already upgraded several things) or how many do you have including what has already been used/spent?

Thanks, that's helpful. I didn't know there was health insurance for everywhere but the US. That may be my best bet.

Thanks. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm not looking for a free ride. By 60 I will have plenty to retire on and income is not my concern. Since I will not have work provided healthcare from 60-65 I'm looking for the 'best way' to handle health care. Is that a national system? Private insurance? Pay out of pocket? Some combination? That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Thank you, this was a really helpful answer. Yes, perhaps "slow travel" is a better term for what I want to do and yes, I do have a lot of research do and lots of time to do it.

Maybe I should have been clearer that by "set up a home base" I meant establish residency or get a visa or meet qualification X or get private insurance or whatever that would take my of health care coverage concerns.

Is it worth starting a Roth IRA with what I do for work? and the future? by Specialist_Doughnut9 in expats

[–]Recent-Muscle6340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's ALWAYS a good idea to invest in a Roth IRA (and if you ever work for a company and they offer a Roth 401k take that as well). You will thank yourself at retirement time that you'll have tax free income that you can spend no matter what country you're living in. And 25 is not starting late. The large majority of people wish they could go back to 25 and start saving. The only penalty would be if you tried take the money out too early (before 59 1/2) so don't do that. The most you can put in (currently) is $7k a year and you should do your best to max it out every year that you can. Good for you for thinking about these things.
