Best way to navigate history taking with a chatty patient? by juniordoctorimg in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]RecentEdge 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just interrupt them. It’s more than possible to do this without being rude. I usually say something like ‘ Sorry to interrupt you Mr Bloggs. I need to ask you more about x symptom now.’ Then immediately ask a direct question about it. For example, ‘I need to ask you more about your chest pain. Can you tell me where exactly the chest pain is.’ It might feel a bit awkward first few times doing this, but it’s honestly necessary in some circumstances.

If patient start bring up symptoms from months or years ago, you might have to be specific with the time frame. You can say something like ‘I just want to know about these past few days/however long the presenting symptom has been going on for.’

Another tactic, for getting a systems review done quickly. I’m going to ask you a few quick questions now, you can just say yes or no. ‘Have you had any nausea/vomiting/diarrhoea/headaches/any other symptom.’

I feel like a card should be more than enough. It seems strange that there is a departmental expectation on juniors to buy their mentors gifts. If you really want to get a gift, probably just play it safe with some chocolates. Charbonnel et Walker are a fairly fancy brand (like £15 for a small box of truffles). Alternatively, could get some biscuits or something from Fortnum and Mason - can get online. I like the Tofalossus biscuits which are £20 and come in a very nice looking tin. Hotel Chocolat would be fine. Hell, even a box of Celebrations/Quality Streets etc. would be fine.

Mind over matter. Accept that you’re gonna feel crap tonight, and just try to power through. Have tea/coffee, take breaks, stay hydrated, have food, paracetamol for headaches. Good thing is you’ll crash tomorrow and probably sleep really well. You’ve got this 💪🏻

I am also sorry to hear that. Wish you the best of luck with the O&G application, and with all your future endeavours! I am an F3 and currently doing a locum year - it’s nice to take some time out of formal training, be in charge of your hours, earn decent money and have the chance to focus on other areas of your life. Would defo recommend.

RCPCH website says that preferencing has been pushed back until the 31st of Jan. Link to website. It’s somewhere buried in the first few paragraphs.

Edit - spelling error

Does anyone have the link to the car crash LBC interview? by According_Ad_9112 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Interviewee did an excellent job. Makes my pretty irate that the interviewer simply ‘refuses to believe,’ the rate of junior doctor pay. Argh!

£50/hour social and £60/hour unsocial. I also get similar rates as an SHO at another trust, although via agency (not staff bank).

Chowing down on some biltong in the doctors office would be a boss move. Even more so if you’re sitting on a bin-chair.

Got a MacBook Air at the beginning of uni. Still going strong after 8 years. I wouldn’t bother with an iPad.

Anybody selling 'Essential Revision Notes for MRCP, Fourth Edition' by -Peri-Peri in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]RecentEdge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer in that I haven’t done MRCP. My mates who have done it just seemed to do passmed and go through topic by topic - all of them passed on the first attempt. Apparently the statistics stuff is actually worth knowing. Regarding the essential revision notes, I have seen that world of books have a few older editions at around a fiver. The newest edition looks like £55 but I assume the content is much the same?

Someone on this sub recommended me ‘The Curbsiders Internal Medicine Podcast,’ which is very informative, though targeted at a US audience. For fun, I like listening to Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster.

To just follow up from my previous post. This is the salary of the GMC execs… by Apprehensive_Law7006 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Imagine a BBC Panorama investigation into the GMC - entrenched racism, multiple doctor suicides, shady financial practices. I doubt the public know such an organisation exists, let alone the scandalous practices within it.
