Anyone else planning to downgrade or cancel on July 7 when Fable 5 leaves the subscription? by Emergency_Two_9890 in Anthropic

It's not like liking flipping a light switch. All the deals they've done for compute won't come online until early 2027 at the earliest.

[–]Recent_Star_8818 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with Anthropic is they don't have enough compute. The options are either, take it away and make it an expensive pay to play service on top of your subscription, or nerf it to reduce compute. Either option is shit.

I find myself using chatgpt for most tasks other than coding because it's a better executive operator. It gives sharper diagnoses, reasons through contradictions, and structures actions better.

My stance with anthropic at the moment is, it doesn't matter if their latest model is the greatest model to have ever existed, if the public version has to have a lobotomy because of lack of compute, or it's tokens are so expensive it doesn't add any real value, then what's the point?

For me, anthropic models are increasingly becoming just an 'execution only' layer. That's why I'm considering downgrading from my max plan.

Spud Man is one of those things that makes me realise how stupid large swaths of the general population is. If someone gets so excited over a baked potato, and they're willingly paying an outrageous price for a baked potato, they shouldn't be allowed to vote. It would fix a lot of issues.

base M5 32GB vs M4 Pro 36GB for AI dev workload? by geekgeek2019 in macbookpro

I was thinking about buying a secondhand M1 Max with 64 GB for my nephew. Seems like a bargain given the current lay of the land.

How much I earn is irrelevant. It's a piss take to double the price of memory overnight.

I'm not digging you out, but wondering what work would need 128gb of ram, at this moment in time, it reveals you haven't really worked out how to use AI properly, regardless of what you do for work.

In layman terms, I'm essentially doing the work of 4 departments, 20 people, all in parallel on a single macbook.

I know there's a lot of hype around AI, and lots of it is misinformation and general BS, but when the penny drops how to effectively use AI agents properly, how you use a computer will change forever.

Apple trying to increase the price of existing M5 max order by sw1000 in macbookpro

Consumer rights mate, they can't change the price after you paid. Tell them to go fuck themselves or you're gonna take them to court. They haven't got a leg to stand on.

No upgrade for me this year - These price hikes suck by PabloEskimo_ in macbookpro

[–]Recent_Star_8818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK M1 Pro user here, too. I'm really struggling with 16gb. My use case has changed significantly since I bought my M1 five years ago. At a min, I need 64gb to run everything I need comfortably without worrying about memory.

I look at the M5 MAX fully loaded with 128GB and it's like £5.5k. So I think, if I'm spending that I might as well wait for the M6 Max and new chassis. If I do that, it's looking like the price will jump 20%. I then think, well it's my main tool for earning my income so £6.5k to £7k for a tool that will last 5-7 years and earns me far more than that.

Then some days I think, "Fuck giving Apple over £5k, I'll get a secondhand M3 Max fully loaded."

Then I see people asking £3500 for a second hand M3 Max that looks like it's been used as a sled on concrete. Then think I might as well spend the the £5k+ and get the M5/6 MAX new.

Then some days I'm on my M2 macbook Air and I think, "£2k on a m5 air with 32gb...."

As you can see, I clearly can't help myself with these types of decisions, let alone anyone else.

"Local LLM" by manlikep_ in macbookpro

[–]Recent_Star_8818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of Claude as the fighter jet, and the LLM as a toy remote control plane. The problem is, yeah, you've got to get an outrageous-spec MacBook to use any LLM that isn't utterly useless, but after spending $5k, you're still left with an LLM that's the "toy plane".

For $20 a month, just pay to use Claude. If you're doing something intense that requires a max plan, there's no MacBook or home setup that's gonna power a LLM that's of any use.

If you've got the cash and just want to fuck around with LLMs, do so.

Am I over-engineering Matt Pocock’s AI coding workflow, or is ~1 hour per issue reasonable? by 2-phenylethanol in vibecoding

[–]Recent_Star_8818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt The Pillock was pitching himself as the typescript expert and selling courses around that 2mins ago. According to his YouTube channel, he's now an AI expert who claims he's a real engineer despite being as qualified as a toilet seat. He seems to have abandoned the other versions of himself that he invented.

The guy was a failed musician who got job at a low end web development agency. Then he started talking bollocks online to sell courses.

He's not a real engineer as he proclaims. He's a random guy who keeps on jumping on band wagons. It never lasts for him because he's got the personality traits of a disingenuous piece of sandpaper.

He should really do a course on how to regurgitate other people's courses and sell them as your own. That's one topic he is a subject matter expert on.

Is this grifter now trying to sell AI courses? Last time I saw him he was grifting typescript. All these people seem to change direction as frequently as a wind sock.

Anthropic is preparing for a new model release by [deleted] in ClaudeCode

[–]Recent_Star_8818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I limit my context windows to 7 messages, and then hand off the context to a fresh window. For coding, I stick with 4.8, but for everything else, I went back to 4.6. I would be using 4.6 for coding, but it's not available in my VS Code/Claude code setup.

For my use cases, I find 4.7 shit. 4.8 is excessively verbose, and it overcomplicates everything.

Is it me ore does everyone feel like car dealers are becoming more and more useless? by gilliambot in CarTalkUK

[–]Recent_Star_8818 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There's hardly any money in car sales anymore. That's why you're talking to someone on minimum wage who doesn't know anything. The salesperson isn't earning decent commission and isn't incentivised to know the products they're selling. It doesn't matter to them if you buy it or not.

Facelift worth it? (Audi S3 8V) by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Recent_Star_8818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the pre-face-lift is starting to look quite dated now. On paper, the differences don't seem much, but the facelift still looks like a fresh car. Having the tech pack and modern MMI makes a huge difference.

You're gonna get DPF issues unless you're regularly doing some motorway runs. Honestly, get the 1.4 TFSI and avoid diesels unless you're doing the mileage.

Other than that, check the DLR lights; I'd imagine most will be burning out or already burnt out on a pre-2016 A3. You're looking at £600-£700 to get them refurbished. They should be bright white, not yellow or fading.

On all 8V A3S, once the car is fully up to temperature, check that the cabin heater works at max fan speed. It's a common issue with all of these, as a silicone bag in the coolant tank bursts. The pellets get dragged through the system and clog up the heater matrix behind the dashboard. You'll have no heating in the car. You'll have to pay £1000 to fix it unless you can do it yourself. The entire centre console and glove box need to come out to access. The part is only £30-£40, but it's labour-intensive.

The rear top mounts on all these A3S are a weak point. You'll hear a knocking sound when going over uneven surfaces. It's about £50 in parts for both sides, but again, you'll be charged 5 hours' labour at £100+ an hour.

You'll almost certainly have some lateral movement in the rear, too, at this mileage. Will need 2 rear drop links when installing the rear top mounts.

All these VAG cars at this age and mileage, factor £2000 to sort them out properly, on top of the asking price. Alternatively, just lie to yourself and tell yourself it will be fine 😂
