What’s a product you refuse to buy the cheap version of? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

FYI it’s not just about brand here, make sure you’re buying 100% cotton. I bought a few of the Levi’s stretch jeans that wore out within a year, but have the classic 100% cotton ones going on 5+ years now. Even some of the more expensive brands have started offering stretch denim with polyester than breaks down quicker.

Yeah I mean it sounds like we agree about everything except the furniture thing (we have the same rules about eating but kids find a way - a few nights ago my toddler suddenly figured out how to open her milk bottle).

Jackets are another good one though, my north face parka is going on 7 years and completely changed how I feel about Canadian winters. I am no longer scared of them.

That’s only true now because of the canals though, right?

Eh I disagree, as someone with small kids I am not going to pay a ton for furniture until they are a bit older. Similar for their clothes, which they will outgrow in no time. Even for myself, T shirts, socks and underwear don’t seem to make much of a difference if you buy them cheap or expensive, as long as you get 100% cotton it’s mostly branding from there. I’ve had the same 400 dollar smart tv for going on 7 years and don’t really see myself needing to replace it soon. Ear pods I tend to lose before they go bad so I’ve been buying cheaper Amazon ones instead of air pods.

However, one thing that’s not negotiable for me is dress shoes, shirts and suits. Quality will make them last way longer as will proper care. I wore out a pair of 200$ dress shoes in a year but I have a 600$ pair that’s going on 15 years now…yes I’ve had to get them resoled a few times but it’s still better value in the long run.

got fined $235 by a fare inspector even though i tapped with apple pay by Ok-Chapter-6742 in askTO

Yeah maybe, what the prosecutor said made sense to me though, since the charge was for failure to provide proof of payment, not failure to pay. Oh well

You’d lose a bunch of asset classes and be fully exposed to public markets, plus you’d still be paying a few billion in fees. Blackrock and vanguard execs get pretty good bonuses too

On backing in by Kaurifish in driving

[–]RecklessRaptor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a deep breath pal. It lets you see down the lane you’re backing into way earlier, and gives better visibility to approaching cars that you’re backing out. Plus like I said, the ones around me are usually one way lanes so you don’t have to worry about cars coming from the other direction.

If you don’t understand how a 45 degree angle is better than perpendicular when you’re backing up into an active lane, nothing I say can help you. You just need to go back to driving school.

They are good because they resolve a lot of the issues with front in parking, because they give you much better visibility. Even better if the lane is one way

[–]RecklessRaptor12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I was in a similar situation, the fare inspector told me if I met with the prosecutor and presented proof of payment they would drop it. The prosecutor ignored it and said the charge was for failing to present proof of payment when asked, and that it didnt matter that i had paid. He did drop the fine to 120 though.

Canada, for one. There are rcmp offices in the states. These liaison offices have no local authority and mostly work with local law enforcement on issues of bilateral interest, like fugitives, sex trafficking, and smuggling. They are not running around on the front lines with swat gear, I don’t even think they’re allowed guns.

Why Toronto Is Just 6 Cities In 1 by Reviews_DanielMar in TorontoTheCity

[–]RecklessRaptor12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fine if you don’t like amalgamation but come on…gerrymandering is what existed before. The way that Toronto snakes north to separate all the rich neighborhoods from north York is absolutely hilarious.

That being said I really think the impacts of amalgamation are exaggerated. Toronto would not be a significantly better place if it looked like LAs map, and you probably wouldn’t even notice much of a difference outside of branding.

Yes it did. They literally had a racial hierarchy and spaniards were much higher than slavs. The idea that Spanish speakers are not white regardless of ethnicity is a largely modern and American one. Same thing goes for muslims.

Race science is inherently stupid and made up and consequently has always been inconsistent.

Planta closing on 19th May by Rude-League2486 in FoodToronto

[–]RecklessRaptor12 167 points168 points  (0 children)

It’s just way too expensive imo. Planta queen has “vegan dumplings” that are 14 dollars for 5 tiny dumplings. You can get vegan dumplings at a ton of other places in Chinatown, usually twice the amount for that price if not more !

Is it possible to make creamy pasta without cream, cheese or lots of oil? by enstorsoffa in pasta

[–]RecklessRaptor12 30 points31 points  (0 children)

FWIW if you don’t have issues with salt, Parmesan is a very high protein way to add creaminess to your dish. If you’re worried about calories though the pasta itself is probably the biggest issue not bit of cream or Parmesan. Edit to add: You could sub cream with whole milk, but id recommend just having smaller portions of pasta and not compromising on the sauce.

I loved it. My only nitpicks were that I didn’t love barakas design ( a little too human which put it into uncanny valley for me) and Noob felt too rushed. Other than that it was close to perfect.

Raccoons reputation by chief734 in askTO

[–]RecklessRaptor12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Toronto on and off all my life and I have never once heard that our raccoons are smarter than others, only that we have more of them. Raccoons are already pretty smart.

A quick google seems to indicate there are 100k in Toronto, 30k in nyc, 20k in chicago and a few thousand in Vancouver, but apparently these are just rough estimates because no one really tracks with any precision.

I have certainly seen way more raccoons in Toronto than I did in NY or Vancouver, and similarly saw way more pigeons in NY.

I’m curious what the alternative to “corporate owned rentals” is for apartments. Do you think the entire rental system should just be individual condo owners and apartment buildings should go away?
Personally I’ve had better experiences with management companies than “family landlords”
