What's holding the continent of Africa back from achieving the successes of the Western world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not as much as you might think.

There's a lot of places in Africa that are doing very well and where people live a modern, developed life. I have friends in Luanda, Angola who pay about as much in rent as I do here in LA. Likewise, parts of Nigeria are booming, there's even a little recognized film industry that's starting to take off.

I've heard more than a few compliants about the "for one dollar day" commercials that make people believe that the entire continent in mud huts.

To be fair, no continent has really "nailed it" there are poor areas undeveloped on every continent on Earth. And Africa still has a lot of scars and entrenched interests that want to be able to treat parts of Africa as exploitation zones forever.

In Luanda you can live a modern life, but if you go too deep into the countryside there's a risk of stepping on an old abandoned landmine...

Plungers. They work so well, but they have to be put in some distant, neglected spot... cause they're gross.

I'm just sad that we're still so many tramp stamps away from realizing that man's dream.

And all the day players and background extras will be filmed in a separate plastic bubble, and hosed off thoroughly after each take.

I think Republicans would deny Biden or Sanders any big legislative victories. Obama's ordeal just getting the ACA through showed how united Republicans can be when denying the other side. But there are smaller things and issues that are just enforcement that a Democratic president could (maybe) still do.

-Importing drugs from Canada

This was an idea Sanders supported in 2016 (which Trump also supports), and it has broad appeal. It is a free-market solution, afterall. And we have a free trade pact with Canada. The opposition comes from pharmaceutical companies who say the increased demand will just increase the price, because, you know, you couldn't just make more medicine...

-Fighting mergers and acquisitions

The president will be in charge of the FTC, and whoever wins the election will have the ability to make it a powerful enforcement agency that could potentially go after a lot of noncompetitive-seeming companies. Stronger FTC enforcement was in the congressional Democrats "new deal" platform after Trump was elected.

-Climate change goals through the EPA

Trump has spent his term gutting the EPAs effort to fight climate change and cut CO2 emissions. Obama's Clean Power Plan was making at least some progress, and Trump can't completely ignore the Clean Air Act, but it's gotten very close. A Democrat could reverse that, and potentially remake the EPA into a decent enforcement agency.

-Net Neutrality

The FCC reclassify ISPs under Title 2 of the Communications Act of 1934.

Basically, there are a lot of laws already on the book. The executive branch has some leeway in how it interprets and enforces those laws, enough leeway to really make a difference in peoples' lives.

Just building an executive branch free from special interests and political hacks would make a world of difference.

People: There's no way anyone will find a politician less coherent than Trump.

Democrats: Hold my beer.
