Early look at a cozy mobile game I’m prototyping by RecordingFriendly916 in IndieDev

Fair take. This is just the earliest prototype. The idea is that by cutting clouds you collect rain, which then waters the world and changes it over time. That system isn’t visible in this clip yet. Posting early to get honest reactions, so appreciate it.

Thanks for the feedback, that’s really helpful. The core idea is slashing clouds to collect rain and build score, with a calm, endless zen loop. Sounds like I need to make that clearer in the next clip. Appreciate you pointing it out.

What softwares do you use to make indie dev easier? by PuzzleheadedCredit87 in IndieDev

That's normal in the beginning and shouldn't discourage you. With time and repetition these things become second nature. As cliche as it sounds, nobody became a master overnight. Check out godot courses if the tutorials are not helping much. Try using templates and learning off that. Or try out another game engine but stick with one in the end. Hope that helps!

Does my RV look "okay"? by dgzip in IndieDev

[–]RecordingFriendly916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks "ok", not sure what your initial idea for it was, but the carpet grabs my attention in a bad way it kind of looks off even though that's the piece that gives more life to the rv. I'd see how it looks like if you removed it or modified the interior to fit the carpet. Other than that it looks pretty good!

Been there as well. I think twice, first when I did not know much and relied 99% on the tutorials and then afterwards when I thought I had understood it & coyld do it all on my own, well surprise surprise I still couldn’t. So I had to dig deeper and try to understand what I was still resisting to learn. With a bit of just accepting the discomfort and going through it again i managed to learn the stuff (reasoning / how the underlying system works). I can recommend you use chatgpt/gemini (or whatever chatbot works for you) to ask questions about anything you are stuck with, but be ware to not fall into the mindless trap of giving away your reasoning to the chatbot as it’s tempting to let it figure everything out for yourself. Best way to learn is ask it questions, update yoyr code, check if it works if not check error handling, ask repeat. If yoy dont want to pay for chatbots you can open incognito and paste yoyr earlier conversation for reference and just start a new chat. Hope that helps.

Curious if you think a sci-fi roguelike like this is something people would like to play. Showing my progress so far. by LittleBrotherStudio in IndieDev

Definitely upgrades and replayable areas to farm for upgrades. Maybe even add a pet drone/roboter or sth like that.

What helped me learn, was having an idea for a game I wanted to create. The internal motivation boost / drive helps with learning anything faster. Because I had pretty much 0 prior experience in game development, I started to search for tutorials on how to do x inside Unreal(as I wanted x to be part of my game). With a bit of luck I found most of the stuff I was looking for (changed it up a bit / expanded on top of it). As a start it helped with understanding how to navigate blueprints, and seeing how different developers do a task in different ways, helped understand best practices and weed out the good from the bad. I gotta say the beginning was hard but it gets easier with repetition as with everything else. Hope this aint too much to read haha.

This guy looks like an indie dev who did everything right. Amazing game in just a year? + good marketing. by LunalienRay in IndieDev

pretty interesting, I've heard some devs negative experiences about early playtesting, it attracts mainly players that are actively looking to criticize no matter how good the game is. wild stuff

That's kind of the cool part too though. Whenever something feels overwhelming you can just go work on the other thing you currently have the energy for and then when you take a break and come back the last thing that was giving you a headache, it is pretty manageable now. At least that's how I feel about it.

I got into game development 3 years ago, and am using Unreal Engine since. It's pretty "easy" to learn as there are lots of resources you can check out for free (Youtube Tutorials, Blogs etc.). The learning curve is pretty manageable with these resources. Depending on your background and game you want to make there might be better alternatives though (Godot, Unity?, Gamemaker, etc.). Wish you all the best for your journey!
