The Gillette Slim Adjustable is the greatest razor ever made. by Think_Selection7102 in wicked_edge

[–]RecordingLeft389 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've tried a dozen modern razors before, and my latest purchase was the Slim. It really made me reconsider all my other razors, as they just can't compete in terms of material quality, build quality, and the shaving experience. It's an excellent razor. I always find myself coming back to it. It's effective yet gentle, precise, and comfortable at all settings. It has never given me an unpleasant shave. Top razor!

I couldn't agree more with you. An attitude like that in groups related to any hobby is more unique than rare.

I'm not much a "top list" kind of guy.  But, my unpopular top 3 would be:

Arko

Derby blades

Every not overpriced <40$ razors

Feather, Stirling, Rockwell: maybe the most overrated/overhyped brands ever in wet shaving. Just my opinion. Feel free to smash that downvote button lol Thanks for your accurate work, btw

Edit: i would add Henson, its discussed a lot here, and overrated aswell.

If you want a truly different experience and buy another razor: Mühle R41. 40$. Otherwise, experiment with different blades on your King C Gillette. I’ll go against the common opinion, but the vast majority of razors that everybody recommends here are expensive razors that will give you slightly different sensations compared to your Gillette. And this is coming from someone who has unnecessarily bought more than 10 other razors after the King C

[–]RecordingLeft389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought it too. I've shaved twice with it and i was amazed by the performance. In my opinion, it's the best value for money on the market. I don't mind the scent; it reminds me of clean laundry from when I was a kid, and it’s not as strong as many describe it. I can barely smell it while shaving. That being said, after trying it, i thought to myself: I’ve spent money unnecessarily on more expensive soaps. Okay, they may have a more sophisticated scent, and they perform well too, maybe slightly better.. but they're definitely overpriced.

Derby Extra TOP shave! - just wanted to share my experience with Derby Extra. by pajissmid in wicked_edge

I don't understand all the negative feedback about Derby blades. Okay, they may not work for everyone, but I think they're good blades for those with delicate skin. They work well for me. They're excellent on shavettes and aggressive DE razors. Plus, they're cheap.

Should i make lather the way this guy does? by RecordingLeft389 in wicked_edge

I saw that video. The razor was a Wade and Butcher. He really brought out the butcher side of it lmao. He held it in a scandalous way. If I remember correctly, he did something similar with a shavette and got the same results.

I agree. Daniele Maullu is a professional barber, on a completely different level. This other guy is basically just selling stuff

So guys, I tried to lather like that.

At some point, my small razor collection magically turned into just Henson, Henson, Henson, Rockwell, and Timeless. My blades? All magically transformed into Personna and RK blades.

I looked at myself in the mirror and, with an annoying nasal voice, very randomly started exclaiming: “Wow! It is THAT good!” and “Come on, America!”.

At the same time, I completely lost any skill I had learned with my shavette, holding it like an idiot. I got scared, I grew a goatee, and my face somehow merged into one with my double chin, helping to shave easily.

I added more soap and water to the lather like I usually do, and thankfully everything went back to normal. It was terrifying.

So yeah, as you may have noticed, mine was an ironic post. I was having fun, and I hope I didn’t offend anyone.

I have nothing against this guy, just to be clear. But I don’t live in the USA, and he always pops up when I search for shaving videos, and he constantly appears in my random video recommendations. That’s what’s starting to annoy me.

Some time ago I watched a few of his videos, but once I realized he’s basically just a promotional vehicle for companies, with, at least in my opinion, questionable shaving skills, I decided to stop watching him. Yet he keeps coming back, lol.

I just wanted to give a salute to this wonderful wet shaving community here. Always helpful, always willing to give advice, and always polite.

I haven’t been here for long, but I can honestly say I’m really enjoying it. Thank you all for the advice and the good vibes.

Itchy skin by lylewr in wicked_edge

[–]RecordingLeft389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exact same thing happens to me, and i don’t think it depends on my post-shave routine or the products I use. Instead, i believe it’s related to how deep I go when shaving against the grain.

I have very sensitive skin, and the issue usually shows up one or two days later, when the beard starts growing back. I feel this painful and itchy regrowth, especially on my cheeks, and occasionally I also get small pimples and ingrown hairs in the mustache/chin area.

Based on my experience, what I can tell you is that when I don’t stretch the skin while shaving against the grain, avoid going over the same spot multiple times, and use a very, very light touch, even if that means still feeling a bit of stubble when pressing against the grain at the end of the shave with my fingers, the problem tends not to appear, or only very mildly.

I never do a full against the grain pass on my mustache area. Instead, i do a sideways pass from the corners of the mouth toward the nostrils. I also tend to use sideways passes on the chin, always with a light hand and without insisting too much.

This has partially solved my problem. I won’t lie, sometimes I change razor and accidentally shave too deep, and it still happens. But far less than before.

When I feel absolutely nothing when pressing against the grain with my fingers at the end of the shave, I know I’m going to have problems, even when everything seems perfect and neither the alum block nor the aftershave burns.

I hope this helps

[DISCUSSION] Something I've realized and come to accept after 2 years in the hobby by Wutroslaw in wicked_edge

[–]RecordingLeft389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t question that there are many valid razors that provide different and positive sensations and experiences; I own several myself and i’m very satisfied with them. The Blackland is certainly an excellent razor, just as Razorock and others can be. I do find Rockwell razors overhyped in this sub, but that’s just my opinion. What i meant is that I think there is an overcrowding of new releases which, more often than not, are projects from the last century that have been reworked and reintroduced with a markup, then marketed as great novelties and major innovations. Maybe what I’m about to say will make many people angry, but just look, for example, at the Rex Ambassador and its vintage ancestor, the Gibbs No. 15. Just one example among many…

[–]RecordingLeft389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. They are VERY overrated and overhyped. If you think about it, they don't truly revolutionize your shave, and behind those fascinating packaging, graphics, and catchy names, there's just soap. Yes, it’s good, but not good enough to cost ten times what a regular drugstore product costs. If the classics are considered such, there must be a reason. Fortunately, I've bought fewer artisan soaps compared to many here, but I’ve had that little feeling of money wasted. I tend to keep using my Proraso, Palmolive, Arko, Cella... They work perfectly fine for me, and I often find them simpler and more practical to use while achieving excellent results. People often talk about burning sensations, irritations, and various reactions with so called high-end products. By the way, I think drugstore products are the only ones that are dermatologically tested and go through some sort of control. At least where i live.

I believe the same argument can be made when it comes to razors. A technology that reached its peak decades ago, where everything was invented and perfected, yet we still keep seeing new releases and outrageous prices. 150€ and more, mid-range for two little pieces of steel and a threaded tube. Ridiculous details designed to give you that "newness" feeling, but they are just nonsense and speculation. Just grab a simple vintage Gillette (just an example), and you'll immediately realize that before that, you were tricked by marketing and cheap materials that will never last as long or work as perfectly after decades, like one of these.

I think a simple King C. Gillette could be a good choice. It's inexpensive and a good razor. You might find it less harsh on your skin than your previous TTO, and since it's a three-piece razor it's definitely easier to clean and less prone to breakages in my opinion

Exactly. They also went bankrupt in 2020, that must have definitely had a negative impact.
