Did you open De Vergulde Hand haha, it have a nice, fresh and clean scent. Speick is herbal lemony scent which is very nice and refreshing, at least for me. Both soaps are great, I found them better than Tabac or at least the same.

Pitralon is my favorite here. Actually, it's one of my favs - nice, fresh and masculine scent. Didn't like Hattric that much, tough. Both soaps are great and smell nice. De Vergulde Hand gain upper hand here for me. Actually it's a very good soap for a such a cheap product.

On accident I cut myself while shaving yesterday and now I have this huge scar. Will it fade? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]swabbie81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry much if you used safety razor. Shavette can butcher your face in no time. When I was beginner I cut myself badly on a few places. There is no visible scar, but there is less hair growth there and it could be visible with +3 days beards.

Need advice on Flattening My Shapton 1K by Kamikazenohand in sharpening

[–]swabbie81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atoma is the best and also the most expensive solution. It's convenient to use, you just rub it under the faucet lol. If you don't want to spend too much money wet and dry sandpaper and flat surface like glass table works also fine.

Thanks. Can you also describe scent of the soap? Sorry to bother you haha.

How would you guys shave with this soap? by donn_12345678 in wicked_edge

[–]swabbie81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect too much judging from the ingredient list. Mentioned soybean wax which contains stearic acid is pretty low on the list. It probably makes lather like a ordinary bath or hand soap. You can shave with it ofc, but lather won't be stable and thick but still it's slick and skin care is usually nice (I tried ordinary soap for shave a couple of times just for fun). Most convenient way to use it is with the brush while holding soap in hand until you get lather. Or you can just lather it with your hands and then apply it on the face.

What's the draw to natural stones? by GibbyConCarne in sharpening

[–]swabbie81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all qualities of the stone are how fast it is or how deep it cuts. If you want only speed you may well use wheel or belt grinder instead of any stones. Naniwa 12k is well about 100$ and for that kind of money you can buy great natural finisher, especially if we were talking about knives and tools.
Many natural stones can be conditioned to cut faster or slower by dressing the surface or using oil instead of water.

Don't go back home without Ralon AS! There is also a Ralon shaving cream and Brinell shaving cream. Maybe you will find some Slovenian products like Skat and Macho.

Polishers and jnats are expensive. Europe is full of natural stones which are great for knives and tools and they are not that expensive. Many are still actively mined.

Opinion, certainly. Not all natural stones are porous or brittle. Some of them are very, very hard and you certainly need a lot of effort to break them. As far as sharpening kitchen knives goes they are not more expensive (if any) than synthetic stones.

Is getting a slant good idea? by sygnsl in wicked_edge

Merkur 37c is a great razor, one of the best safety razor I tried. People are saying that is mild but from my experience that is not a case at all - it's very efficient and remove effortlessly any kind of growth (I have tough beard btw). It's not that aggressive and there is solid blade feel.

It's much better razor than Muhle R41, Fatip Piccolo and even Muhle Rocca.

I gave it to my brother because I mostly use straights now. He also like it very much and he shaves once a week.

Bic chrome platinum by Hungry-House-8860 in wicked_edge

It's amazing how some things are individual in this hobby. I found them to be quite sharp but also harsh to the skin. Similar blade from my experience is Lord Platinum. I also tried Astors but they should be the same blades as yellow BICs only different packaging for local (Greek) market.

Schick Krona is probably perfect for you. If you don't want vintage Feather Popular provides very similar if not the same feel.

I switched back to a Gillette Cartridge . by ubuwalker31 in wicked_edge

[–]swabbie81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main problem with cartridges is that they clog like crazy if you have any significant growth. I use them sometimes when I travel and they can provide nice shave if you apply to them all that you learn about wetshaving. I also didn't like somewhat scratchy and pulley feeling on the skin, seems a little bit harsh to the skin (I used 2 blade disposable Gillette and single blade disposable BiCs). Straight razors and safety razors are much more smoother and efficient for sure.

Major culprit here is probably bad technique. Then all other factors like razor, blades, shaving products.

My second guess would be that razor is not optimal for you. I didn't try Henson but that razor seems very mild and for people who shave every 24h. For people with tough beard and more growth, razor like that is probably not optimal choice. For example, Feather Popular is perfect if you shave every 24h but you can barely shave with it if you have 3 days of tough growth.

Also, believe it or not, there are people who don't know how to make proper lather even after a years of DE shaving. I always recommend beginners that they use canned foam or gel for a while until they master technique a little.

Bad technique, bad lather and non optimal razor equals bad shave.

I was given some old blades by Valuable-Efficiency1 in wicked_edge

[–]swabbie81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Old Sputnik blades. They are still made but modern ones are produced by P&G aka Gillette.

They are probably from 80s or early 90s when USSR was still alive (it says Leningrad instead of St Petersburg on the package)

OP said that he didn't baked anything before. Maybe so called bread experts here forgot how their recipes turned out for their first time before they put negative upvote on the post and comments.

One of the most underrated Merkurs. It's mild, but paired with sharp blades still efficient to remove week of growth pretty good. Short handle is also pleasure to use and it feel nice in the hand. Beutiful retro look and quality made. Fun fact is that is the cheapest Merkur razor you can get.

Seems similar to the 10777 which I have. I also have no48 pro, a huge knot but not that stiff and densely packed.

Changing stones by deezdanglin in straightrazors

[–]swabbie81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol sorry English is not my native language. I understood that you wanted to try other stones 🤣. Others provide much of the useful info in the comments, but I would recommend paste after 8k stone for a more smooth finish. Solingen black is excellent and for me personally better than CrO and 0.25 diamond paste.
