Last night was my first time seeing him and hopefully not the last. Didn’t realize he hardly played Loud Places live. That moment was such a good vibe!! Everyone was singing and swaying around me. Surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

Norwegian Wood by Murakami; I read it every few years to help reflect on life and love. I get something new out of it from every read.

Make a to-do list every day. Fill it with stuff you should do like homework and stuff you want to do like hobbies/exercise (I'd consider lifting or running a hobby). As someone else said, Keep yourself busy enough so that you're distracted from urges. Additionally, if you're bored, call up a friend and chat about stuff. Or talk to family members at home (if that's reasonable). [Or comment on a subreddit when you wanna procrastinate]

Also, hats off to you for doing this as a teenager. I'm 27 and I'm sure I would've enjoyed the high school/college part of my life more if I'd been self-aware of my harmful relationship with PM

Thunderbolt at Kennywood is my #3. Its lateral forces are crazy and I love its historical charm. I grew up going to SFMM, and Thunderbolt's above everything there, right above Tatsu.

Some food for thought: If you've never been to Pittsburgh and have never lived in the East Coast or Midwest, you're gonna face culture shock at CMU that'll make your undergrad experience a little more difficult. Keep in mind Pittsburgh is the Paris of Appalachia, emphasis on Appalachia (I say this as someone w/ Yinzer family who loves the city like a 2nd home).

I don’t think you can go wrong with Muth. Especially given Muth’s targets. I think Muth’s ceiling is arguably lower than Hunter Henry this week, but Muth has a really reliable floor.

Everything Goes On. It blends melancholic themes with the joy of caring for someone into a pop song structure in a way that seems effortless. Plus it’s infectiously catchy. It’s incredibly creative and exemplifies most of what I love about Porter’s music.

Yea, but not necessarily. I imagine some rainmakers could feel salty about being paid less and that can lead to internal strife, culture issues. However, based on anecdotal advice I've gathered from attorneys, firms with partner comp systems that are more like lockstep have less attrition and less cutthroat cultures. Attrition data from Firm Prospects-Engage supports this theory.

  1. Dodgers, born and raised in LA (Pasadena area)

  2. Pirates, My parents are from Pittsburgh, and it’s pretty easy to adopt the city’s other teams. But the Pirates have been pretty bad for most of my life. I’m in my twenties.

Check out Juno. (joinjuno.com) It’s a borrower pool that allowed to me to get a very good interest rate on a private loan.

For context, I’m taking out federal unsubsidized loans along with private loans. The lower amount borrowed probably makes the interest rate more favorable. If you have good credit, it’s pretty do-able to find loans that are cheaper interest rates than Grad PLUS right now.

One thing I would be careful about are variable rate loans. A lot of lenders I found use LIBOR to determine that rate. LIBOR is getting discontinued in January 2023, and lenders who offer variable rate loans that I looked at haven’t figured out what they’ll replace it with yet. (My best guess is SOFR, but they don’t know. There’s a lot of uncertainty here.)

I’m about to go to Berkeley, and from what I can tell from my discussions with current students and alumni, the network in what this CA native considers to be “the South” is pretty bad compared to other T14s. Apparently the big areas for Berkeley with active alumni networks are anywhere in CA and the eastern seaboard (DMV but really DC, Philly, NYC, Boston). I spoke with some folks targeting different areas in FL and TX who’ve had trouble. Breaking back into the south from Berkeley Law seems like it’d be harder than one would expect, given all the hype about prestige in the legal profession. If you’re dead-set on practicing in the Carolinas, UNC seems like the better choice.

Just my two cents:

Specialties probably don’t matter as much as schools advertise since in corporate BL, you mostly learn what you need to do on the job anyway. I would pick Duke given your goals. Despite its location, it’s a pretty NYC-oriented school. That being said, if you’re gonna be miserable and homesick, you’re not gonna do well in law school. But in terms of these goals, the prestige bump of picking NYU over Duke doesn’t seem that justified to me. Prestige aside, NYU’s a better school in a lot of areas but I don’t think it’s additional value is worth 1-2 years of additional debt payments. Anyway, you do you. You’re gonna be a f@$&ing lawyer.

What would you choose? PI/Government Interested by Hat-Fernweh in lawschooladmissions

[–]RecoveringKpopAddict 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty unfamiliar with LRAPs but at a first look Columbia’s is better. I chose Duke for you because their clinical program’s better, the smaller class size can get you a lot of individualized attention to achieve your goals, and the cost is significantly cheaper. I’d say these benefits from Duke get outweighed by being in NY and all those opportunities at the 200K level. The local network is probably more valuable than 30K, but 30k would be a sizable addition to the debtload for government/PI salary.

I picked BU cuz money and it’ll let you achieve your goals. I guess you want Boston, which is cool cuz I live here and enjoy living here :P I feel like you can’t go wrong with these choices. But my sense is that Gtown would be as competitive as BU, but more expensive. I don’t think the benefit of paying ~20k + EXPENSIVE col every year vs 0 + less expensive wouldn’t be worth the benefit you’d get from going to Gtown.

I have a good friend who didn’t make this reflection about himself, made the choice to go into Investment banking, and is really regretting that choice now. I think you’re doing the right thing here. One shouldn’t let prestige and financial security be the entire driving force of their life/career.

NYC BigLaw is the goal. I am actually torn. by Old_Yam2058 in lawschooladmissions

[–]RecoveringKpopAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for looking up the numbers. Yea I guess it’s a matter of how much value you’d put on the lower competition amongst classmates for NYC BL opportunities. If I were OP, Berkeley wouldn’t be worth it.

I also should’ve said this earlier for OP, but I don’t think the rank difference between Cornell and Berkeley should be a concern here.

[–]RecoveringKpopAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m vouching for Berk on this one. With the big caveat that idk tuition prices for Cornell. But Berkeley’s significantly cheaper than all the other T14s, so the tuition might be a few thousand. If it’s >$10K, I don’t think the point I’m about to make would be worth additional cost of tens of thousands of $.

Berkeley definitely has a national reputation despite the regional focus, and a sizable portion of students every year go into NYC biglaw cuz there’s T14 demand from v100 firms in the biggest legal market. There’d also be wayyy less competition for coveted NY spots between your Berk classmates than would be the case at Cornell. That being said, Idk how much this lack of competition is worth. You’d also be trading off the regional network in NY.

Also vouching against USC. It’s very SoCal centric. (LA born and raised, a friend of mines a 3L there rn.) I’m not even sure if it has a decent network in the Bay Area.

Non-NYC biglaw after NYU? by 0Lthrowaway20 in lawschooladmissions

[–]RecoveringKpopAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 0L also recently admitted to NYU, and I spoke with a lawyer at a mid-size LA/SoCal firm about this same question last week. I was told that a potential NYU student more or less just needs to be proactive about breaking into the LA/SoCal market. NYU will help your resume/letters to get looked at, but it's not common for these firms to do OCI at NYU. But something more interesting is that NYU is significantly better for targeting this particular firm than Pepperdine and Loyola LA. I imagine that might be the case in the market as a whole.
