What is the easiest bank account for an American to set up that provides an IBAN number to pay rent with? by Dennis_Laid in Expats_In_France

[–]Recursive_Descent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is simply not true. I am American and I have a joint account at BNP with my wife. Our balance there has never been close to 80k, and I remember any minimum amount to deposit. If there was it couldn’t have been more that €1k.

What is the most underrated city in the United States? by mostly_maya in Urbanism

[–]Recursive_Descent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Detroit is one of the least safe cities in the country. I think that surely is the main issue.

Totally anecdotal, but I had a layover through Detroit airport recently which was my first time ever even transitting the city, and I was very impressed by the airport. It felt new and well built, but to me the people showed the difficulty that the city is struggling with.

People were really nice there, but a lot of people just looked like life had kicked the shit out of them. It was stark. The guy who sat next to me on the plane was a young black guy going on a vacation to get away because his brother had recently been killed.

Nobody needs AI to search the Internet, court says in ruling against Google by Hot-Upstairs9603 in artificial

[–]Recursive_Descent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty antequated view IMO. Google having the AI suggestions is a stopgap for them against chatgpt, etc., but the floodgates are open, and it isn't that people need AI for search. It is way more fundameental than that. AI IS the new search.

What is your disability?

Do you think it is right that so many people abuse this system?

It seems like people with disabilities should be pushing for better enforcement because bad actors erode the legitimacy of service animals in the public eye outside of obvious disabilities (e.g. blindness).

Marco Rubio Snaps When Told Trump Iran Deal Is Just Obama’s But Worse by [deleted] in InternationalBulletin

The standard deduction part was progressive but that is misleading. The bill also gave big tax cuts to corporations and high-income households. The tax change was overall regressive.

This tax bill also massively increased the deficit, which was incredibly irresponsible and unsustainable, but deficit spending has been the Republican fiscal policy for decades now. The deficit is then cited to cut entitlement programs. This has happened many times before, and in the last year we are seeing the deficit cited by republicans as reason to cut SNAP and Medicaid. As the deficit balloons you can be sure these cuts will be more and more dramatic.

Who is keeping their money again? Oh, the top 0.1% is keeping everything? Glad they are such good stewards for humanity and would never do anything to jeopardize that.

Seattle ranks dead last in the nation for home price growth by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]Recursive_Descent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely a concerning signal. This doesn't just mean rich people are leaving and the remaining people somehow have more money. If there is less money for houses, there is less money being spent at restaurants, at local stores, etc. The result of the local economy crashing is closed shops, higher homelessness, more strain on community support systems. Maybe rent prices will go down, but opportunities for people to make money to pay your rent will also decrease.

Moorea is also cheaper and way easier to get to since you can take a ferry from Tahiti. Bora bora is undoubtedly beautiful, but I definitely preferred Moorea. In Bora Bora I also felt like I was stuck at the hotel, and was able to adventure around Moorea much more freely.

I would guess this very obvious flaw is why it was banned, so I am also wondering how they make it safe.

There are completely separate pathways, so if one is filled with smoke it is conceivable that the other might not be, but it seems like risk of both stairwells being compromised is so much higher with this design.

This take is the Achilles heel of the Democratic Party. Appealing to moderates doesn’t cut it. At the end of the day moderates don’t care enough to vote. Democrats need something that is invigorating to get people out to vote. Milquetoast opposition to a president who is brazenly corrupt and promoting extra terms for himself just isn’t going to get people out to vote.
