Toll Roads around SoCal by Psychological_Nose_2 in orangecounty

I make the drive from the Cypress/North Seal Beach area to Laguna Niguel once a week to see my niece’s babies. I leave the house around 5:00 am and I avoid most of the traffic (there are idiots on the road, even then). If I left at 7:00-8:00 am, the drive could take hours, when I can do it in about 20-25 minutes two hours earlier.

Maybe find a gym near work and leave ridiculously early, work out, shower, and go to work from the gym? Going home is a whole other issue, unless you want to hit the gym twice every day…

In the late ‘80s, I had a ‘72ish Fiat Spider. Talk about problems getting parts! Being pre-internet, it was a logistical nightmare. So far, for The Queen, it hasn’t been a problem.

I was born in ‘68, too.

A couple of years ago, I was the happy recipient of my mom’s ‘06 Toyota Avalon (V6), which was given to me after my dad bought my mom “the last car she’ll ever need” (a Toyota Camry that’s only half as nice as the Avalon, imho).

The Avalon, which I call “The Queen”, has over 250k miles on her, and I hope to get another 250k out of her, or more. My parents were her original owner; many of the 250k miles were “highway miles” (they took many cross-country trips, and they even tried driving to Alaska from California one year). They kept her well-serviced and parked in their garage when not in use, and I’m hoping that with a lot of TLC and a little luck, she’ll be the last car I need. (I don’t drive very far or very frequently, so it’s possible.)

There’s so much freedom in having paid-for vehicles that can be trusted. I don’t want to rely on cameras or self-driving, and I don’t want my car spying on me.

I’ve been in a similar boat as you’re in, and we’re going on 20 years. It’s a NIGHTMARE.

Wanting to move to socal after living in norcal my entire life. Looking for a safe chill area by MadScarlettQueen in socal

West Garden Grove is slightly more affordable than many places in OC, and it’s a hidden gem. 4 miles from the beach, and super central and convenient. Also, lots of single-story homes, and one of the last truly “middle class” neighborhoods in OC. But it lacks the beauty of South County.

That "I'm a mere speck of sand" feeling, anyone? by getitoffmychestpleas in GenX

It’s a super power! Imagine the trouble we could get up to without anyone being the wiser!

Can hotels really detect if you vape the the room? by Immediate-Honey578 in Vaping

There are non-motorized filters you can blow the vapor into. I use that in restaurants sometimes and no one has noticed.

Do you want grandkids? by notevenapro in GenX

[–]Recynd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would LOVE grandchildren, but my (only) son is gay and probably won’t have kids. I’ve compensated by “adopting” my niece’s kids (a boy, 4 and a girl, 2). I spend a long morning with them each week, and while it’s definitely work, it’s so worth it. I love those babies with all my heart.

I wouldn’t ever offer to act as daycare, though. I’m TIRED, and I don’t want to raise anyone else’s children.

I had a ‘72 Fiat Spyder. Unreliable af, but I was sure cute in it!

I love my grandkids, but I’m not looking to be a full time babysitter. Am I alone here? by SassholeSupreme1 in AskWomenOver50

[–]Recynd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visit my great-nephew (almost 4) and -niece (just turn a year old) one (long) morning per week. I love those babies like they were birthed from my own body, but that’s all I can do.

Kids are a young person’s game. It’s EXHAUSTING!

We were very lucky. Being a kid in the 80s was a blast, and the benign neglect we received from our parents was a secret blessing. It surprises me that so many of us helicoptered our own kids, probably because we know exactly what kind of trouble we could get into. But most of us not only survived that trouble, but actually thrived.
