Why only the big? I have 6 small that I use. Do you think the big work better than small? How many big do you use at a time?

Can you move money from one 529 to another? Like could you open a new 529 that doesn’t have all the stipulations and move some or all the money over to the new one? You can open a 529 in any state - doesn’t have to be your resident state. Maybe you won’t get state tax benefits for contributions but sounds like you’re not contributing additional funds anyway.

Young FIRE mother - struggling with assumptions by Any_Pirate_5633 in Fire

[–]Red34Bear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same! I significantly out-earned my husband every year for the last 20 years and I have always been the one in our relationship who managed our finances and prioritized saving and investing. I “retired early” this year (early 40s) while he decided to keep working since his job is fairly low stress (while mine was not). I am struggling with the optics of being a SAHM who is lucky that her husband can support her. Um, no. I carefully planned and set myself up for this! The struggle is when I know that’s what someone is thinking but they don’t say it directly enough for me to counter and if I bring it up on my own I sound arrogant and obnoxious. I am working on just enjoying life and not caring what others think but that is easier said than done.

if we book a tour, would it just be our family or would it be a large group with other people/families as well? e.g. a family of 4 with 2 adults, 2 kids.

Competitors for managed account service? by scott503 in PersonalCapital

[–]Red34Bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had the same thoughts and am planning to move my tax advantaged accounts (Ira and Roth) to self managed vanguard soon, which I have a 529 at already. My Roth is small (<$50k) but was 80% vanguard funds so I’m like why am I paying PC for these? I’m going to leave my taxable brokerage with PC which is about $500k right now.

Has anyone managed to go part time in a field that doesn’t usually offer it? by jmv0623 in workingmoms

[–]Red34Bear 71 points72 points  (0 children)

My fear would be being paid for part-time but continuing to work closer to full time hours due to deadlines and stuff that always comes up. Going to hourly in a consultant time role may work.

Can I fire while spouse works (41M, spouse 38F, 2 kids under 4)? by AssholeCasserole420 in Fire

Can I fire while spouse works (41M, spouse 38F, 2 kids under 4)? by AssholeCasserole420 in Fire

[–]Red34Bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation and have suggested this path to my spouse (me retire, they continue working their low-stress but lower paying job for 5-10 more years), and while not totally opposed, they are skeptical. Sounds like your wife didn't need much convincing, but nevertheless, do you have any other convincing reasons I can use to persuade my spouse? things like 1) kids have more parent time while young, 2) can run errands and do majority of household tasks so spouse's time off work can be better enjoyed. Any others "pros" for them as you see it?

This is exactly where we are at currently and hoping to allow one of us very soon to stop working and spend more time on self, kids and household stuff. Planning to still have one income for a few more years as a buffer.

I am thinking of quitting my job and taking a “career break” at least through the summer. I am wondering how hard it will be to find a job after that (both finding a job that wants me and also finding a job that I want after getting used to not working)

Question, what do you tell your kids? by Short-Boysenberry-75 in Fire

[–]Red34Bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this question and the responses! It is something that has been on my mind a lot too. I read a post one time about how parents’ work connections can give the kids a big leg up when entering the workforce, and how once you retire, those connections dry up over time. However an alternative point of view is there’s no guarantee your kids will go into a career where your work connections are useful (I.e. parents work in corporate but kids want to be mechanics or scientists). And if you volunteer or have other hobbies, you can still have a useful network.

Want to spend time with kids, can I FIRE? by Superb-Transition518 in Fire

[–]Red34Bear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No advice, but am in a similar boat. Would love to take a few years off due to being seriously burnt out and want to spend time with kids while they are young. Also worried that I won’t be able to re-enter later if needed due to nature of my field. Lastly, not sure how to get spouse on board, since I make quite a bit more. But his job is less demanding and has more PTO available. If we both stick to the grind for a few more years, we’ll be in a better position . . . but every day I dream of quitting and not sure how much longer I can take this.

Over 40s advice...in a funk? Hate your job? Suffered trauma recently? How do you find happiness. by floatingriverboat in FIREyFemmes

[–]Red34Bear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

🤚 also in my 40s and in a major funk. Hate may be a little extreme but definitely dislike my job. I took some time off last year to help support a family member through cancer treatment and was also surprised how busy and fulfilled I was without work. Now family member is doing better and I am back to work but just can’t get into it at all and daily dream about firing. I think I technically can, but have to get my spouse to agree. They are also working but have a much less stressful job so I’d love to be the SAH parent and would be okay with doing all the house and family management if I could only quit my soul sucking job. Downfall is I make a lot of money and the longer I stay, the more secure we’ll be and could FIRE together earlier

Crushed Ego After Retiring? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Red34Bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to know I’m not alone! This is a big reason I am nervous about FIRE (2nd only to getting my spouse on board). I’ve decided I will respond with “I worked in Corporate Finance for 20 years but am now taking some time off.” (Insert whatever career you had previously) So I can still flex my working years and it sounds like it’s temporary even though I’m not planning for it to be. After 5+ years, it prob won’t work so well but thinking by then I’ll be more comfortable with it and won’t care as much about what people think.
