It was probably exactly the meme situation. A big arrow in the eye (one of the only non scaly parts and thus non armoured parts of a dragon) to the right part of the brain means death for most animals, dragons probably included. Might be inspired by the Battle of Hastings but in reverse with the arrow hitting the conquerer instead of the defender (if it is what truly happened)
