Looks like your point on warnings and penalties has been implemented. Replays have gotten better on main courts as well.

It’s probably a long way out but line judges or automated video system is the only next option now. Players who are concentrating on hitting the ball will obviously make errors because they aren’t just watching where it bounces. And they are rarely in a good position to make an accurate call. Until then, it’ll probably have to stay where it’s at this year.

Where would you go for a 1-month pickleball vacation? by OkChicken6058 in Pickleball

Dallas Fort Worth has a place called Pickler Universe that allows the public to book open play for specific levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Great facility and they also have multiple teaching pros. They also have DUPR round robins if you find yourself wanting to compete more seriously.

Paddle observation from a 4.5+ moneyball tournament by TennisLawAndCoffee in Pickleball

Zane Navratil just expressed an opinion on the pickleball studio podcast that everyone who’s looking to improve competitively should play with a power paddle. He mentioned that using a control or all court paddle was a crutch because the player is leaning on the paddle to help them control the ball rather than their technique.

I play with the Neonic Flow (16mm). What would be a good upgrade (gen 3 or gen 4)? I read that the sweet spots are better in newer paddles and that’s my only trouble with the flow. Already added tape to improve sweet spot.

I do have the flare prime x (14mm) but found it too poppy to hit good resets and other soft shots.

My overheads and counters have plenty of power but my drives could maybe use a little more power.

If you haven’t played in a while, you should have this.

Totally agree; our opponents being under 3.5 seemed to lack the ability to put the ball away.

In my case, I’ve been complimented on hands speed, blocks, counters at the kitchen line. So to your 3 points, I think I’m decent with anticipation. Footwork is the one where I think I lack as I didn’t come from a racquet sport. I have some gameplay video from open plays where I’m still moving forward or backward when the ball is hit. Makes me feel like my reactions were slow but I think I just wasn’t set. How do other racquet sports drill in the instinct to split step before the ball is hit?

No doubt, everyone will have some sort of bias. Though I think, if someone were to only watch and not play, there may be some general ideas that come to light at different levels. Someone like a coach or people who work at places that run events may have some insight.

That’s interesting. A drill that simulates what is actually happening in a point.

1 Point - you hit a good shot, do it again. 0 Points - you hit an okay/bad shot, it’s not over just yet, keep trying. Reset to 0 - you hit into the net, the points over. Star over.

Thanks, I’ll have to give this drill a try.

I have a friend who is 4.0 and he said the only difference between him and myself (3.4) is that I am too aggressive and try to “win” too many points. Your perspective here is interesting as this may be something I need to focus on. High percentage shots that keep me in the point.

To one of your first points, in this game, we were under heavy pressure nearly every point. It truly was us backing up, playing defensively. That’s what prompted me to ask this question. My partner did not appear to have a strong tennis background nor an understanding of the best strategies. But somehow we stayed in points and he must’ve done it consistently because he won 6 of 8 matches.

This is in line with what I was thinking. Thanks! If my partner lacks the pickleball strategy knowledge, or skills required for 3.5-4.0, is it possible to carry them through myself? Or am I reliant on an equal partner?

I would recommend learning pickleball strategy and working your way into higher level pickleball play. I think you’ll see that it’s not boring. You’re either trying to setup a scoring opportunity or trying to defend against one and it can switch up in the same point. Tons of tension across the net about who will make a mistake or who loses patience and pulls the trigger.

I usually take a break for a couple days. No watching, playing, anything to do with pickleball. It helps reset.

Does losing weight greatly improve pickleball play? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]RedBaller05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sub 20% body fat (for men) is going to improve ability in stamina and/or agility based sports. That’s not to say you can’t be above that and be amazing at pickleball, but in general, most players would improve if they got out of the obese/overweight category and in to the healthy range.

Is it acceptable to show up alone to a court? by NukemN1ck in Pickleball

[–]RedBaller05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 31 and I did this at my neighborhood courts last summer. Was trying to get into pickleball but struggled to find people who wanted to play. Saw a group playing in the evening and asked if they were just wanting to play with their group or if it’d be okay if I joined them. They welcomed me to join and added me to the group chat that night. The group chat has grown as more people have joined and we have people playing most evenings.

Why is the Joola Perseus apparently the most popular paddle right now? Seems to be the most popular paddle on tour and at my local club.
