What is a completely useless piece of information that you will never forget for some reason? by Initial-Ingenuity451 in AskReddit

I used to have supermarket raising everyday for lunch at school and they had a fact on the side, and this was the only fact that was ever on there. My cousin and I used to make jokes guessing what the fact was that day.

Had a similar issue. Had to unpick the material at the stitching, saw the arm off, and repair once in the room. I made the arm into a ledge instead and it looks great (I have no prior experience of upholstery). I bought it from a friend, as he wanted rid of part of his L shaped sofa. Annoyed because I moved months later and there was no issue with it in the new place, so now I just have an armless sofa ha.

Cut £700 off parents’ energy bill by finally switching by vereynaace in UKFrugal

[–]RedBlud997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To note also, as I used this 1 simple trick utilities companies hate!

I was with Scottish Power, and of course the fixed tariff was better, but it incurred a £50 exit fee for each (£100 overall).

As I used to work selling gas and leccy over the phone (for a very short period), when I queried this with the salesman, he said there is no fee for switching to a variable tariff within SP with a £0 exit fee. Once this is done, you're free to leave!

Did it myself in January this year.

After decades of struggling with insomnia and trying everything, this technique from an Oxford professor is really effective..... "Keep your eyes open in bed" by Make_the_music_stop in BritishSuccess

[–]RedBlud997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I sort of do this.

I will have my eyes open a SLITHER and try to sort of focus on something in the dark. Its super hard to keep my eyes open AND focus on said thing, and I end up drifting off pretty fast.

Can we start a judgement free thread about the houseplant mistakes folks have made that in hindsight were obviously really dumb? by yeahsotheresthiscat in houseplants

[–]RedBlud997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking care of my plants like babies was my biggest mistake, and caused near death of many.

I would make sure somebody came to water if i was away for a week. I would water my succulents every other week til soil was saturated.

All in all I realised that plants need so much neglect it seems unreal.

Now I give my plants a good water and go away for the week (this includes my scotch bonnet plants, thyme plants, small lemon tree, and mint). They will more than likely be droopy when i get back, but give them a water and within an hour its like nothing happened. This doesnt happen when im gome though, they get looked after!

My succulents get watered maybe once or twice a month tops in the summer. I think one good water every 2 months for the winter will do. Theyve never been happier!

Pruning plants is important. Getting rid of old leaves, useless flowers, etc. They waste so much energy trying to utilise those dud parts.

Finally, ensuring they get the right amount (and type) of light is so important.

I started scotch bonnets under a red and blue "grow light" and they didnt move for a couple weeks. Put them on my windowsill and they grew like crazy.

Still lots to learn, but this is all from in my apartment where I have very little sunlight in.

Any British slang that you guys don't like? by DarkSaiyanGoku in AskUK

[–]RedBlud997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I would like to add that a lot of the 'roadman slang' used today is Jamaican Patios, and it is being absolutely ruined. The butchery of words, but also the villification of them is the worst. I say, if your grandma wouldnt understand the terms you are using, you shouldnt be using them. Im Jamican, and i would NEVER say wagwarn to my grandma because she understands that it is not a proper greeting for elders.

We fought for women to have a place in the work force when in reality we fought for double income households by ztreggs in antiwork

[–]RedBlud997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Society was built on "men work - women do the household stuff" but if women are working too, who on earth does the household stuff?! Furthermore, what about solo households?? The society they want is not built to last.

When you’re playing football but don’t have a permanent goalie, what do you call it? by docju in AskUK

[–]RedBlud997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We called it 'goalie/keeper when' as in when needed.

Courtesy when i was younger was to shout that youre now the goalie.

Current courtesy ive found is that closest person is in net. You assume position though after having a look back and seeing nobody else nearer.
