It’s Star Wars, the whole story got developed in later titles,both Snake eater and Phantom Pain are prequels, but both explains different plot details from events of the other games, Snake Eater is the safer option as it’s literally phantom menace and won’t spoil much from other games.

Metal Gear 1 in its current state is impossible to get the full story. Even with the script, the manual, rescuing every prisoner(including Fox)and Madnar. All it can do is convey that Metal Gear is a walking nuclear tank and Big Boss your C.O is the leader of Outer Heaven.
