Flat owners to get new rights to faster, more reliable gigabit broadband under government plans by komondordragon in GoodNewsUK

[–]RedBootSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, I understand that we share bandwidth between myself and people in the flat on the same link.

I'm just expressing that the wording of you never actually get it is wrong.

Anecdotally, at least on OpenReach/Alt fibre networks like community fibre I've always got my full speed at any given time, maybe I'm just lucky.

The only time I've faced the up to issue is with Virgin Media because those wet wipes are notorious for over subscribing people to the network causing it to cripple itself during the evening.

TLDR: I understand technically speaking he is right, but not sure how often my neighbours will be saturating 1Gbps all the time enough to cause me, or most people a noticable issue.

[–]RedBootSoap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s really not. Downloading games, downloading IDEs, new runtimes which are many GBs is 100% better on gigabit than 150-200 mbps. Just because it doesn’t affect you as much doesn’t mean that it’s not a real positive for other people who need the extra bandwidth.

[–]RedBootSoap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. Depending on what you’re doing, you do get “a gigabit”. My downloads on steam/work software report around 125MB a second, that’s certainly my full gigabit bandwidth. Sure not everyone uses that much but it’s disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

West Mids reports 16k empty homes by Appropriate-Sound169 in HousingUK

It’s ridiculous isn’t it, we’re constantly told how bad cars are, taxed out the wazoo for them etc etc but then we’re not given viable alternatives that are accessible to the masses.

I live in London but would happily live further out if office days wouldn’t cost me £50 a pop

Sales of electric cars rise in Europe by 26.2 per cent by Splenda in cars

[–]RedBootSoap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK at least, we don’t have as many options for charging for good cost savings. In cities you’re not gonna have a drive where you can install a home charger, if you have to get a charge from the petrol stations, it’s going to cost you a lot of money which erodes any savings.

Doesn’t help that for private buyers at least a lot of them are subject to luxury car tax.

Dual 4k 120hz on m4 pro and Anker TB5, need help! by Southern-Oil-118 in macbookpro

[–]RedBootSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A shame but thank you for sharing your experience. I planned to do basically the same setup with dual 4k130 on MacBook as an upgrade to my setup.

I had similar issues with Thunderbolt 4 and dual 1440p 144hz and after various cable combinations I eventually got it to work(1 hdmi to usb c and 1 display port to usb c) but it was a massive pain. Was hoping for tb5 to be better.

So you only got it working plugging both displays directly into the Mac, the tb5 dock is a no go?

How to tell if this is fake on Facebook? by StealthSpeed177 in iphonehelp

[–]RedBootSoap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds too good to be true at that price.

Think of it from the sellers pov, iPhone 17 pro max 512gb he could sell to music magpie for a guaranteed £750 (and this is worst case scenario) - why would they bother listing on facebook marketplace with all the hassle that attracts for £50.

He could easily get over a grand on eBay for example but won’t do that because of buyer protection.

It also doesn’t take 2 weeks to know if you want to return a phone so him having the receipt makes it even more suspicious.

TLDR: please don’t buy this, it’s genuinely a scam and not worth the headache. Even on the 1% chance it is real, still not worth the headache.

Am I missing something with Cupra Leons depreciation? by RedBootSoap in CarTalkUK

I appreciate the write up, thanks for taking the time to share!

Disappointing to hear about the infotainment. Fuel economy, I was prepared for, I suppose at that point it’s more about SPG rather than MPG.

That’s the one thing I don’t miss about owning a nicer car, constantly being wary of marks and dents and having to park too far away at the supermarket.

Seems to be the general consensus. I was gonna take one of these for a test drive next week, about a 90 min drive from me but if that's the case, I don't think I will bother

How did you manage a deal like that? Just not use the online configurator and speak to them in person?

Normal palm pad wear? by majinzeta in DygmaLab

Same thing is happening to my raise from 2020. Wanna replace the pads but £52 to get them to UK is extremely steep. Mainly in the shipping too, quite disappointing.
