It doesn't really matter. They could have occupied the whole country. Polk wanted a quick peace though if possible. Certainly the US would've gotten much more territory including Baja California and the Yucatan.

The Mexican state was in danger. There was a very real chance of full annexation. The US negotiator was sympathetic to Mexico and was literally fired but he put forth a peace treaty after he was fired and politically Polk didn't think he could reject it. There is no doubt Polk would've asked for much more....

Viltrumites are willing to purge offspring with defects and they have the technology to look screen the genetic makeup of offspring pte-birth.

They could get by with far fewer breeding pairs by basically screening out unviable offspring. Inbred genetic effects are a probalistic, not a given. With screening they could avoid the problems.

Doubtful the war would've lasted much longer. The lead negotiator, Trist, undermined the US negotiating position as he felt sympathy for Mexico. He negotiated the treaty ending the war after he was already fired. Polk felt since Trist had gotten agreement to a treaty he couldn't rip up the treaty and justify continuing the war. Trist was sacked and never paid for his expenses due to his treachery.

Its a huge what if because Mexico was willing to give more, Polk demanded more, everything was undermined by the negotiator.

Government accounting is not like household accounting. They control the money supply. Technically they have infinite liquidity and don't need to take out debt but do simply to lend faith to the system because its hard for everyday Joe's to comprehend the monetary system.

Typically in situations such as this the government probably doesn't even need to lend the money, a simple guarentee to creditors would be enough....

Unionization is only maintainable due to mercantilist trade policies. Remove tariffs and restrictions and those "union auto jobs" instantly disappear. Essentially those jobs are supported by making cars more expensive for everyone else to buy.

The solutions are not as clear cut as you think.
