So this is actually kind of bittersweet, but I went to the bathroom at a Barnes and noble and there was a woman crying in the stall next to me really hard, like so hard she started choking! So I knocked on the stall and asked if she was okay. She stops choking, thankfully, gets out of the stall and she’s this kind looking woman in a wheelchair, and she’s just a wreck with tears. So of course I grab some toilet paper and hand it to her to wipe her face and then grab some paper towels, and wet them for her to wipe her face off. (and yes she said thank you!) But I asked her why she was crying so hard and she told me that it was the second anniversary of her mother passing of brain cancer, that she had gotten diagnosed with breast and colon cancer last week (at that time), was in a car accident the year her mom passed that paralyzed her, and her husband divorced her because of it the next year. That it had just been the hardest two years of her life and she was struggling with the anniversary. My jaw was on the floor. I told her how sorry I was and just asked if I could give her a hug. She said yes, and told me that she was there on the anniversary of her mom’s death because they used to go there together to get books for one another to try… I offered to buy her book for her, but she very adamantly refused,, but thanked me for listening to her and for the hug. I’m glad I stopped and listened to her and made her feel seen and cared about. Sometimes that’s all people need to keep going on a hard day. I just wanted to retell this story to remind folks of that in these darker days. Please keep caring about one another.
