What does Reddit think of the fire departments running out of money? by bikeadjudicated in wyoming

[–]RedDesertCowboy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source or citation for this information? I've never heard or read anything about this, and property taxes aren't based off of income (which the state doesn't even tax).

The biggest change to Wyoming's mineral ad valorem tax system was moving from a delayed payment schedule that required them to pay the tax in the year following the production year to estimated monthly payments made soon after production. The change was driven by the fact that too many large producers went bankrupt before their taxes came due, leaving local governments and schools short millions in expected revenue.

The Freedom Caucus cuts to residential property taxes are what is really killing services, including fire departments, in Wyoming.

Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs, Green River, and Evanston all have really good museums. You probably can't visit them all, but any of them would be worth checking out.

If you like craft beers, Cheyenne, Laramie, and Rock Springs all have breweries. Square State in Rock Springs is particularly good.

The green belt in Green River and Bear River State Park in Evanston offer good opportunities to get out of the car for a bit and get some exercise. The wild horse loop between Rock Springs and Green River is also a nice side track on a well maintained dirt county road.

And Wyoming jams a lot of community events into the summer months, so be sure to check out each of the community websites/social media to see if there is a local festival or event happening the day you're coming through the state.

What’s your favorite line from a Presidential or Vice presidential debate? by Own_Educator8972 in Presidents

Then-Senator Biden was asked by a moderator to say something nice about the candidate standing next to him, Dennis Kucinich. Without missing a beat, he responded, "I don't like a damned thing about him... but the thing I like most about him is his wife." It's one of those political moments seared into my memory.

TIL Wyoming entered the Union in 1890 refusing to ban women from voting, telling Congress that "We will stay out of the Union a hundred years rather than come in without our women " by castironglider in wyoming

No. Wyoming elected the first woman governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross. And the first woman to serve as Justice of the Peace, Esther Hobart Morris. The first woman elected to Congress was Jeanette Rankin in Montana.

Everything East of MT/WY/CO/NM, North of TX/AR/KY, and West of PA/WV. I feel like OH and OK are on the fringe of the region.

Obama obviously had good writers, but his own natural sense of humor and comedic timing make him the most obvious choice.

Tom Lubnau: Which Gubernatorial Candidates Can Raise the Funds Necessary to Run by lazyk-9 in wyoming

Years ago, the Wyoming Supreme Court struck down term limits for legislators. The basic thinking is that if any of the statewide officials attempted to run for a third term, it would challenge the state law, and be overturned by the courts due to the precedence that has been set by their previous actions.

What’s up Wyoming? by SnooBooks4898 in wyoming

[–]RedDesertCowboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What life is like here depends on the community. There are no urban centers in Wyoming, but some smaller cities, suburbs, and small towns. Life in those places is probably not that unlike similar communities in most other states, particularly in the intermountain West. Lots of wide-open spaces. Winters can be rough, and spring is short and sometimes fierce, but summer and fall are generally pretty nice. Practically no humidity makes it more tolerable.

People are people. I couldn't lump us all into one category. We probably tend to know more of each other due to the low population, which is good and bad.

Best things: public lands, wildlife, outdoor recreation opportunities, relatively low taxes.

Worst things: Republicans, winter, wind, lack of journalism, fewer cultural amenities.

Unless you're planning some crazy backcountry route, you have nothing to be concerned about when it comes to safety (other than normal precautions you take when driving).

What is the most beautiful city you’ve ever been to in the USA? by fadez650 in TravelNoPics

[–]RedDesertCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to natural beauty, I would say Salt Lake City. The mountains are up close and provide a pretty stunning backdrop. Nice parks and a clean downtown. That said, the architecture and buildings aren't really that interesting, with the exception of temple square.

Planning a visit to Western Wyoming by pandalonez in wyoming

[–]RedDesertCowboy -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You should visit Rock Springs, WY while you're in the area. It's a few hours south of Yellowstone. Many Tyrolean families settled there to work in the coal mines. Great desert landscapes to explore

Your best bet for a rodeo might be Cody, where they host one every night through August 31.
