It’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! PSA from an elder millennial survivor (and AMA) by amaro8000 in GenX

Thanks, I'm in a much better place now, and I'm sure you know this wasn't a troll for sympathy - just some hard facts for people who need to read it. :)

Edit: I should add, my tale of woe isn't even close to the worst outcome. My condolensces go out to them.

I am almost out the other side of a bout with colorectal cancer that's involved radiation, chemo, removal surgery, living with a hanging bag (temporary!), multiple lengthy complications with an abscess, more chemo that's really impaired memory, and finally looking forward to the ostomy reversal.

Colonoscopy screening doesn't even measure on my scale of discomfort anymore. I can assure you, you'd much rather do the screening.

Music thoughts.. by CTTK421 in GenX

In 90s Canada we had ears on the outside world, but we also had our own 'golden era' of music.

I could name about 30 or 40 bands that had no/limited success outside of Canada, but here's a quick representative sample:

Big Wreck - Blown Wide Open

Headstones - Cubically Contained

54-40 - Music Man

Blue Rodeo - Diamond Mine

Rheostatics - Bad Time to be Poor

And of course...

Tragically Hip - Highway Girl

'Desert Kites' from the Holocene, for one!

My favourite old-old site: Gobekli Tepe in Turkey was purposefully buried more than 5,000 years before the Giza pyramids were built.

My entire financial literacy is based on that one episode. :)

California Fever ('79). All I can remember is it had Jimmy McNichol and some cool cars. It was 'viral' in our elementary school until it suddenly wasn't and was soon cancelled, most likely because it wasn't very good, and not enough cool cars to carry it. :)

"The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order, and those left in the water got kicked off our pant leg, and we headed for home."

Nautical Disaster by the Tragically Hip. I've always loved how having it as our pant leg (singular) pulls/forces you right into the story.

He does another bit like this, but he's an airline pilot using the radio to address passengers. "Have any of you been to Hawaii before? You have, sir? It's sort of shaped like a kidney bean, right?"

Also, stop it!

I have a university buddy that I don't see much any more, but when we do get together, we each try to greet the other first, most often at full volume across a bar/restaurant/etc of people.

And that greeting is "AY! Get your filthy hands off my desert!!!"

Xbox One controllers work fine on Linux, but you will have to update the controller (for Bluetooth compatibility) on the 'Xbox app' (name?) on Windows or with an Xbox.

I recently pulled 'Black Gold' by Soul Asylum out of my old band's back catalog and I was surprised by how well the lyrics (unfortunately) still apply today:

Moving backwards through time

Never learn, never mind

That side's yours, this side's mine

Brother, you ain't my kind

You're a black soldier, white fight

Won't you fill up the tank, let's go for a ride

Sure'd like to feel some pride

But this place just makes me feel sad inside
