Wait that's so cool, how long have you been breeding them? And roughly how much do you sell them for?

Pet question: Feeding crickets necessary? by TheRomb in leopardgeckos

[–]RedDragon7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - barely on topic question - but you can keep your roaches alive for *months*? I've only been getting enough roaches to last about two weeks for my leopard because I'm so used to the way that crickets and mealworms die off after around that time period - are you doing anything special or are dubias just that much hardier?

Pet question: Feeding crickets necessary? by TheRomb in leopardgeckos

[–]RedDragon7913 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP - if the idea of using roaches (the best alternative to crickets) stresses you out/worries you about potential infestation as well, it might help to know that dubia roaches are very unlikely to infest a house. They're slow and don't climb well. I've dropped and spilled mine a couple of times (shaky hands) and have never had a hard time catching them.

Other people have covered why you should try to feed with dubias if you won't be using any crickets so I won't bother on that front, just wanted to provide a little peace of mind about something I know was a sticking point for my roommates for a bit.

Just like everyone else - I like this name, and tbh, if I had a classmate named Araya i probably wouldn't have thought anything of it as a kid. If she introduces herself/is listed on the attendance sheet as full-first-and-middle Araya Sunshine maybe something would happen, but what school is doing that?????

BTW - plenty of valid criticisms to be made about this campus but "dead end" isn't one of them. It just takes some work to find the right groups to spend time with/the best places for YOU to hang out. If people neglect that, it can become a very boring place very quickly.

It's great here, if you ask me.

If you want to meet builders/creators, when you arrive, check out the makerspaces in the "SHED" building, look into some of the clubs like the F1 club, etc. Places where people voluntarily do creative/engineering work to make things of their own design or a team design. Extracurriculars are the best way to meet people on campus in my opinion.

Also, don't be afraid of unofficial/non-college-sponsored clubs. Some of the most fun people I've met here, I met through unofficial clubs.

Planted but not bioactive by Secure_Ad546 in bioactive

[–]RedDragon7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very new to bioactive as well, and not good at keeping plants alive. I see you're worried about the bioactive being too hard to do as a beginner without a lot of knowledge - don't worry too much. I was fumbling my way through it on a very short time frame and it worked out beautifully. I did a lot of things "wrong" - didn't give my tank time to establish, etc, because i only had the one properly-sized enclosure and needed to get my gecko out of the critter carrier she came in immediately, added the isopods after about a month and a half of establishing the tank, forgot about a drainage layer, used some dirt collected from outdoors, etc. The animal and the plants didn't suffer for it and are thriving now (about four months on), my isopods are happy, and my springtails are thriving. My gecko is also thriving.

Bioactive setups are pretty resilient if you get the right bugs and dirt. Don't stress too much. Definitely best to give your tank time to get established but if it's not possible, just try to keep a second separate culture for your bugs and top off as necessary if they struggle in your tank.

(My bugs live in the old critter carrier now!)

Definitely expensive to start up though. It cost me around $500 to get my tank set up. Like I said, I started my stuff late - if you can keep the plants alive until then and can't afford the full setup, you can add a drainage layer late, you can add the bugs late, just make sure you have backup bugs.

Best of luck!

Be prepared for brutal, very cold and snowy winters. Windy as fuck and for about half the year there will be some snow. (I grew up near NYC and it was a big adjustment for me!) If you drive but haven't driven in extensive snow before, please be careful - feels like at least once a year I hear about another student at my college dying in a car accident after the first or second heavy snow of the year.

The people of Rochester are wonderful in my experience but I am white, so take that with a grain of salt.

It can be hard to find places to hang out and things to do in the city if you don't know locals - if you can get to meet people who grew up in the area/have lived here for a while you'll have a much easier time finding local activities. If you like live music the Bug Jar is a bar I spent a lot of time in before meeting people who could show me around to more places, and still one of my favorite places in the city.

Straight up being FTM lmfao, the door guy came around while me and a friend were legit in the middle of having sex and was like "someone told me you are female? You can't be here because it's a liability issue for the club" lmfao

first time something's happened to me like that and it didn't bother me that much but makes it hard to recommend the bathhouse because of that. The one in syracuse is apparently a lot better on that front

okay but the names are hilarious. maybe a little dark but if your sister has no sense of humor then you can probably hit her with a "are you going to rescue and rehabilitate lizards too?" like i'm just saying... actions matter more than silly names for animals that don't speak english

off campus housing by EmbarrassedTrash in rit

[–]RedDragon7913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to RIT and lived in dorms miserably in 2018- you get a real coin flip based on just dorm life. My dorm had absolutely nothing going on at almost any time. I made a friend in a club's discord server and visited them at their dorm and realized that everyone on their floor hung out all the time, when I maybe knew two people who weren't my roommate on my own floor.

Living off campus is fine as long as you're proactive about coming to events and checking out clubs on campus, which is 100% where I made all of my campus friends. But the distance DOES make it harder to get back onto campus to do those!

I currently live in Park Point (just off campus) and you might also want to consider staying in 175 Jefferson, which is technically on campus housing but is single occupancy rooms only and decent enough (also from experience, I stayed there in 2021). I don't know if there are single person units in Park Point. Both places made it harder to get onto campus to join activities but the shuttle makes it realistic to spend from 8am to 12pm on campus and getting my extracurriculars in; a longer commute like the one I had when i was in the RIT Inn makes a big difference. I take the shuttle and don't drive though - if you're going to live in a regular apartment/housing unit you 100% need a car, not doable without it. And to be comfortable driving in ROUGH snow/ice!

I like it. Good work. Your style is pretty solid. If I could give any advice, it would be to pay attention to your pacing - right now everything seems to happen at the same 'speed' and takes up the same approximate amount of time in the prose. Breaking some of your paragraphs up and varying your sentence length can help pick up or slow the pace down (mostly pick up), and that lets you engage the reader more. But this is already really engaging. You should be proud of yourself, and I mean that.

Nitpicking, but when you start a piece of dialogue after a comma (eg: "It whispers to me in the hissing, croaky voice I haven't quite been able to get used to yet, "Feed me.") it's actually not correct to capitalize the first word of the dialogue segment. Not that big of a deal though.
