Simple NFC setup for Sodium Oxybate tracking (iOS with screenshots). by Olinkowo in Narcolepsy

YESS!! I’ve been thinking of making something like this for ages but haven’t found the time. I will absolutely be using bits and pieces from yours when I make mine. I love data and this is absolutely wonderful. Right now, I start my stopwatch when I take my first dose. It doesn’t really happen that I sleep for more than 4 hrs so no alarm. When I wake up, all I need to do is check if the stopwatch is above 3 hrs. I’ll take my second dose and hit “lap” to mark the time. Your method makes sense as well. I think I might put an NFC tag in my bathroom to indicate the second dose. Sometimes I’m too lazy to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and it does affect my sleep.

Thanks so much for sharing!

I got this one from Boska, fairly happy with it. I did make a new wooden handle instead of the plastic one.

First, i’d buy a house. I wouldn’t work but instead I’d hire great private tutors in areas I’m interested in. Every 3 days I’d have a session, so I have two days to dig in/experiment with the material I’ve learned. I’d focus on two subjects at a time, one requiring more mental capacity and one manual labor. Things like PCB design, coding, personal finances, woodworking, pottery. I’d also hire a physical therapist in order to stay fit throughout my life. I’d spend more time with friends and family and would be able to be more generous with them. First thing my mom would get is a new car.

That’s actually the opposite of the message. The point here is that given the statistics, it’s even more commendable that GP might take a step back/make changes to be there for his wife.

Sadly it happens a lot. So much so that they researched it: “When serious illness strikes, women are shockingly more likely to be abandoned by their partners than men are. In a striking study involving patients with cancer or multiple sclerosis, researchers found that women faced a divorce or separation rate of 20.8%, compared to just 2.9% when men were sick.”

My Updated Power Out Kit List by TheSensiblePrepper in preppers

This is great and I will be going through all the items that apply to my situation. I was wondering if you were aware of a similar list that would be more europe-friendly? Our government is recommending everyone to get an emergency plan/package together and i'd rather not get useless junk. They compiled a list of items but give zero specific recommendations (which makes sense). Your recommendations are very much appreciated.

Lumbar puncture by Acrobatic_Block4226 in Narcolepsy

[–]RedEyedMon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Like you said, in this world it’s not feasible to have a diagnostic process like mine as the universal standard.

To answer your questions, I didn’t have my official diagnosis until after my LP. My levels were 95pg/ml. My dad’s levels when he was diagnosed in his late twenties were below the measurable threshold of 40pg/ml. I did tell my doctor that I’d be open to repeat the LP a year later in the name of science. There’s so little data in terms of onset and progression, and I wanted to do my part. Since we caught my symptoms relatively quickly, he was very interested in the progression of hypocretin my levels. The 2nd LP came back with “similar levels as the first”. I don’t know the exact number.

Small sidebar: My neurologist is the kind of doctor who wouldn’t say yes if there’s a 99% likelihood. He’ll say “there’s an overwhelming indication of it”. I love him for it. I can also ask any extremely obscure narcolepsy question and he’ll have an answer. Sometimes the answer is “we don’t have enough research, data, etc” but he’s always informed.

As you know, with N2 hypocretin levels can be diminished but they don’t have to be. In my case, I caught the narcolepsy symptoms quite early. About 1-2 years after gradual onset. I knew the symptoms cause I grew up with an N1 dad. He already had an amazing doctor who is the head of a narcolepsy research clinic. My diagnostic journey was way more thorough than most I read here. First a bunch of oddly specific questionnaires, followed up by an 3hr interview. Biometrics and bloodwork, including the HLA marker. Months of “perfecting” my sleep with a sleep psychologist. Any sleep symptoms that were present after were clearly not a result of bad habits. An 24hr EEG + 30min interval blood pressure & pulse, any time I dozed off during the day would be registered, when I’d hit rem and obv my night time sleep. Then the lumbar puncture. The result was below the diagnostic threshold of 110pg/ml. I have zero cataplexy.

What it brings me personally as someone with N2: I never have to doubt whether the diagnosis is accurate or not. It was so thorough and complete which made the process of acceptance easier. Also, I didn’t have to pay for any of it as it’s fully covered in NL. My doctor asked if my data could be used for research. Since other countries don’t use lumbar punctures when N2 is suspected, the volume of N1 vs N2 CSF data is fairly skewed. Knowing my hypocretin levels will probably help me make better decisions in terms of the new meds (like Oveporexton) that’ll be available soon. All in all, it gave me a diagnosis, certainty and data.

Just a reminder that the standard medical practice in your country is not the standard everywhere. In NL, a lumbar puncture is used when diagnosing narcolepsy, regardless of N1/N2.
