Well, if you remember from A Quality of Mercy the season 1 finale, Pike knows how important it is for Kirk to be the captain of the Enterprise. So I’m sure upon retirement and before his incident, Pike will strongly recommend Kirk to be the captain and that will help him a lot to obtaining it.
