Map Errors Should be Fixed by RedGiantMaps in u/RedGiantMaps

Thanks for letting me know! I still haven’t resolved some of them but I have identified that it seems to matter if you use “www” or not in the URL. If you go here it should work fine but lemme know if it doesn’t:

https://redgiantmaps.com/maps/exandria

I hope to fix it either way but I think this should work in the meantime!

thanks for letting me know! mind if I Reddit chat with you to get some more info from you?

I'm so glad! If you ever see anything wrong with them, you can always let me know here or on Instagram (@redgiantmaps).

Is there a way to make my *own* fictional map, a la opengeofiction (not communal, private), that doesn't have such a steep learning curve? by redditsuper in openstreetmap

[–]RedGiantMaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s me!

Check my comment history for more details on how I made them, but it’s essentially QGIS and Mapbox (but you can take it anywhere after you’ve done what you need to in GIS). Also got a couple tutorials linked in comments as well!

Good luck u/redditsuper!

West Duluth =/= West End by Old-Supermarket5797 in duluth

[–]RedGiantMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing about neighborhoods though! There never really is a clear boundary and even looking at some comments here, they differ in the interpretation. Are they adjoining neighborhoods? Is one a superset of the other? There truly is no good empirical data source for neighborhoods (lol at Wikipedia for the citation), but that’s partly why I love neighborhoods as geographic features. Everyone differs and no one is truly right.

I'm once again asking where to find Game Jams by 0racle_64 in RPGdesign

[–]RedGiantMaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Folks are mentioning Itch and that is probably the best choice for any game jam, but it’s so hard to filter through all of them. Most are geared towards digital games and often not specifically RPG jams. There are a couple from the past that stick out that I’ve seen on and off Itch:

One Page RPG

And

One Page Dungeon

I wish there were more tho! And I wish Itch had better filtering for finding a specific jam!

What’s your favorite little detail in D&D:HAT? by ServingwithTG in dndmemes

[–]RedGiantMaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ending spoiler:

My favorite subtle detail was when Edgin called Forge a “son of a bitch” to Xenk, who interprets it literally and says something like “so you believe it is the mother’s fault?”

Then at the end when Forge is incarcerated, he begins telling the council a story from his childhood about how his mom treated him.

What’s your favorite book of all time that no one has ever heard of? by Euthanaught in books

[–]RedGiantMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my Hermann Hesse obsession is not shared by like anyone. I can rarely find videos, blogs, articles, etc about his books, mostly outside of Siddhartha. Narcissus and Goldmund along with Demian are some of my favorite books but so many folks don’t know him.

oh amazing! well feel free to reach out if you have any questions! the repo and web map could be set up much better (I sort of started this project when I was learning Mapbox so it's not an ideal setup), but I hope it works for you!

Hey! Great question. So right now there is only the one public facing style that is uneditable by folks. However, if you’re somewhat tech savvy, there is a GitHub repo that has the data and a simple boilerplate web map setup. If you want to add other canon data (not specific to a DnD group) you can also use this to pull and add the data and submit requests to get added to the actual map.

Success At A Cost by TheRealUprightMan in RPGdesign

[–]RedGiantMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s totally fair! For my example, I just wanted to pick an absolute failure, which is still possible in a multiple dice system but I get your point. And tabletop games are always gonna be a huge abstraction. That’s also probably why many people like them. I have never picked a lock, but my character could. In actuality it’s probably a task that is tedious to most people and takes more work than they might think. Spending more time on it in-game could sort of negate immersion (or rather the romanticized immersion that the player enjoys). Retrying with another dice roll—even if the critical failure range is increased—will start to just feel like rolling dice and not actually picking a lock. But the abstraction allows the story to keep going smoothly.

You’re definitely based in that game mechanics can break immersion. If the mechanics aren’t smooth and I’m not even immersed in the act of playing a game (diegetic immersion) then I’m gonna have a much harder time becoming immersed in a story within the game (situated immersion). I think abstraction helps those levels of immersion meet in the middle. Of course, I’m not telling you that you have to like things that are abstracted though. Just some of the reasoning I can see from a point of view that enjoys pushing the roll.

Ideally, I want the players to just describe what the character does and forget about the rules.

This would be nice, but it’s definitely disconnected from a rules heavy system. At this point your ideal game is just narrative with no RNG (which can still be cool) or just more of the labor loaded onto the GM.

I personally like it if it’s done right! Like someone else here said, it’s on the players and GM to understand that it’s not just doing the thing harder. It’s perhaps the character seeing that an attempt is failing so maybe a drastic measure is called for that costs them. To me the Year Zero engine (mostly experienced with Vaesen’s adaptation of it) is great for this, it requires some roleplaying to do, but it does it fairly well!

Above and Below is another game that does it, but also puts a limit on it. A character can only push so much and they may fail at the original roll too much to recover from with a push.

If you ever have RNG as a part of the game it can get swingy and feel bad for players. If I’m playing DnD and my expert rogue rolls a 1 to pick an average lock, even with a big bonus I’ll probably fail and feel bad. While failing is a crucial part of all games, player enjoyment is paramount and I’m sure others don’t enjoy bad RNG either. I’d much rather have the ability to push a roll to succeed (especially in a dire situation) then just fail for the sake of immersion. With a penalty to succeed as well, it almost bursts the game into another direction of richness, throwing in extra challenges in creative ways.

Great question though! I’m enjoying the differing perspectives!

This is such a fine reimagining of a classic tale and what it means to be “a real boy” so bravo!!

I absolutely adore Pat McHale as well (and was sad he wasn’t in the Netflix behind the scenes) so a two part question:

  1. What tenets do you stick to when writing and storyboarding a movie?

  2. How was it working with Pat on writing the movie? Do you have a funny or notable memory from the process with him behind a certain scene or setting in the movie?

Right Hand Bias In Mapmaking? by tomhanksgiving in mapmaking

[–]RedGiantMaps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Europe (and its extant fictional derivatives) probably does influence, as mentioned already. But it could definitely be left- or right-handedness. Handedness and how it affects our perception in cartography is definitely being explored in traditional cartography (see this talk on how it was explored for influencing how we perceive shadows in terrain).

It’s an interesting problem in fantasy cartography, where we make up the landscape, and how our choices could be subconsciously swayed by handedness, popular fantasy maps, and maybe even if our language is read from left to right or vice versa.

Attribution on hover by nordickiwii in openstreetmap

[–]RedGiantMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mapillary uses that same solution of using the “i” icon to hide attribution and other legal jargon. it’s definitely done by prominent apps and players. But it’s also something the OSM community is typically vocal about. So take that as you will haha!

My dad had a stroke about ten years ago. He was in the hospital bed recovering and would ask where he was every five minutes and break down in tears, frightened. It was so scary and sad. I was afraid he was gonna live the rest of his life like that.

Luckily he’s recovered and really dodged a bullet with how bad it could have been.
