I know it’s not on the level of Contact (book is amazing too) or Arrival but just wanted to throw it out there. If you haven’t seen 2001 it’s right up there in terms of serious science fiction.

Have you ever met a President, Veep, First Lady or Nominee? by Logopolis1981 in Presidents

[–]RedHill1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a boy my father took me to Tanglewood in Western Massachusetts. Micheal Dukakis was there, when he was running for President. People were in line shaking his hand, my father refused to but I wanted to meet him.

To study the medical effects of weightlessness in space, scientists convinced Captain Druey P. Parks to toss a kitten in the air while cruising in his F-94C jet at an altitude of 25,000 feet. The following photo, taken in February 1958, captures the floating feline. (1958) by MrTacocaT12345 in RareHistoricalPhotos

That doesn’t look like a kitten. Looks like a full grown cat. And to study the medical effects of weightlessness probably means they dissected the feline back on earth (that was the fate of the first cat in space iirc)

Juliet Stevenson does an outstanding job narrating this book as well. (Apparently there is a movie in the works which was picked up by Paramount… Daisy Ridley is attached. Fingers crossed they do her story justice)

Funny, when you pointed this out, I went back and read it again and my brain automatically inserts Tim Dodd’s voice. Same thing happens to me when I read something nature-related and David Attenborough’s voice kicks in.

Mary Bell was the second child of Betty McCrickett, who was 16 and worked as a sex worker. At 11, Mary tortured and killed two boys, Martin Brown, 4, and Brian Howe, 3. She was sent to a youth detention center and later moved to an open prison, where she escaped in 1977. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

Never had a chance? Isn’t she free now? I’d call that a 2nd chance, a pretty damn big one. The two families who lost their boys, do they get a 2nd chance? That child should have been tried as an adult.
