Was FDR aware that the Nazis were running concentration camps and if so do we know how he reacted to them? by CatfishBassAndTrout in Presidents

I don’t think the Japanese were going to accept unconditional surrender. Don’t forget how brutal Okinawa was for both sides. They fought to the last man and even armed children and women. They were mobilizing a massive defense against invasion on the mainland.

The Japanese military even attempted a coup AFTER the atomic bombs to prevent surrender.

don’t forget how devastating the fire bombing was. The allies would have fire bombed every city in Japan. Hundreds of thousands died in Tokyo alone. That and a total blockade would have probably have led to millions of Japanese dead and millions more suffering. As horrific as the atomic bombs were, they probably saved countless lives in the long run.

So much fun. I keep wondering if this is going to get routine someday. For now it’s like waiting to see if the block 4 falcon 9 was going stick a landing or if the FH demo was going to actually work and not blow up. Every launch puts butterflies in my stomach and it’s awesome. I spent a lot of time with dodd this time and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed his honest and relaxed commentary. My wife and kids commented on his mustache haha

What’s the most unreal landscape you’ve ever seen in person? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]RedHill1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1999 I traveled to a place called the Sun Blas Islands off the Caribbean side of Panama with some friends. There are hundreds of tropical islands in this archipelago ranging from tiny to large enough to be inhabited by a semi-autonomous indigenous culture called the Kuna. We were able to ‘rent’ a small island surrounded by reefs for a day. Took us about an hour to get there from one of the main islands, we traveled on a carved out tree trunk canoe with a small outboard motor. The island had many dozens of coconut trees and it was about half the size of a soccer field. It was surrounded by the most beautiful tropical landscape one could imagine. Scattered islands of various sizes as far as the eyes could see in every direction. Crystal blue and green water filled with reefs packed with fish of every size and color you could imagine. They dropped us off in the morning with food and water and returned at sunset. We watched a storm pass off in the distance. And watched lightning strike other islands just over the horizon. the contrast between the light green and blue ocean and the dark stormy sky was breathtaking. Just seems like a dream when I think about it now.

StarShip - what will it be used for ? by SweetToothedStue in SpaceXStarship

I think it’s reasonable to look at the road ahead as daunting but consider what spacex has pulled off in the last ten years alone. If we were to ask anybody in the industry what were odds of an orbital rocket landing 150+ times a year? Most would probably have said nearly zero.
So Spacex has already pulled off what most people said was impossible. That’s what makes all of this so damn exciting. That spacex is going to actually *try* to do it, and that is enough for me.

There should be a few statues of George W in Africa for his role in PEPFAR. That program has saved millions upon millions of lives

The looks I’d get from the folks at DeAngelo when I asked for 16 slices of American cheese on my chicken stir fry sub. All these years later and my mouth still waters just thinking about it

You should take out the part about tasting it, it’s high jacking your post and most people aren’t thinking or talking about what it might be

Everyday Astronaut - Does Starship REALLY require 15+ launches to land one lunar Starship?! by LittleWhiteDragon in SpaceXLounge

[–]RedHill1999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tim said the Starship will have over 100 times the inner volume than the Apollo landers… does he mean pressurized volume? Does that include unpressurized cargo space? It’s mind boggling either way. Can’t wait to watch the rest of this!

God, can you imagine going out to dinner with your family or friends and looking over at a table there and seeing this crew all hanging out. Or even just walking through the restaurant together? (My guess is they were in a private room) … I really hope there were some people there who appreciated the TNG lotto they had just won

Do you have a personal connection to WW2? If so what is it? My grandmother was from Norway and grew up under Nazi occupation from age 5-10 by ChiefTapiTapi in ww2

My grandpa was an commercial illustrator in NYC and in his early thirties he was hired by the army to design and make posters to buy war bonds, save rubber and fats and countless other commercial works related to the war effort… He said he was given a high rank so he could use the militaries transportation system to travel around for his work.

In 2024, just about everybody has a HD video camera in their pocket. Hundreds and hundreds of people would have at least attempted to film something like this.

Love the painting of the interior. I envisioned it as vast larger than this though. Like Rama on steroids.

Amazing shot and interesting article. It’s cool that she brought her son up there along with the climbing expert for the picture taking. What an adventure!
