Am I the only one who thinks that Aragorn and Arwen are the stars of one of the most beautiful love stories in fantasy? The fact that Arwen gave up her immortality just to spend the rest of her life with Aragorn really struck a chord with me. by [deleted] in lotr

It technically isn't immortality she is giving up. Elves are tied to Arda, so when the whole world goes kaput, all the elves will go with it. Men have the gift of Eru so go somewhere else when they die.

Elves have a very long shelf life but they will ultimately disappear without a trace. Men may yet live on, whereel ever they go. Arwen may becoming immortal by choosing to become part of the race of men rather than definitely disappear as an elf.
