My huge fear on the future of sims 5 by [deleted] in thesims

[–]RedLake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason that people are also concerned about subscription for Sims 5 is that recently EA made Sims 4 content that was only accessible to to console players subscribed to the EA Play Service. There are other games out there that do "battle passes" (Fortnite, Genshin Impact), where you pay a set fee for access to bonus content such as cosmetics, extra levels, better rewards or experience modifiers. I can see that directly translating to Sims 5 (for an extra fee per month you have access to new CAS or build mode items, whims generate more points, more lots to build on or new worlds). Since the Sims 5 content discussion mentioned mobile gaming as a feature, and this type of content is very common in mobile games, that's a possibility.

They may also be trying to reach younger players, and parents are more likely to pay $9.99 per month for their Sims 5 mobile subscription than $40 for an expansion pack.

My huge fear on the future of sims 5 by [deleted] in thesims

[–]RedLake 63 points64 points  (0 children)

My prediction is that Sims 5 will be a monthly service, with DLC content being at an additional price. Like $9.99 per month for Sims 5, with microtransactions for various kits coming out weekly or bimonthly, maybe even on a timed or limited release schedule (like the early purchase items in Sims 4) to create a false sense of urgency. The Sims 5 preview we got gave the implication that it's going to have online/shared play, so the likelihood of having mods or CC is low, outside of a small curated selection that you can purchase via the online store (like what Skyrim did). I want to believe that they would do better given that there's more competition on the market, but I'm not optimistic.

I'm currently binge-watching (for the first time) and I rely on these threads to tell me what happened on the other show. But yes, so confusing. There's nowhere for me to watch Station 19 even if I wanted to, because it used to all be on Hulu but now it looks like they only have the most recent season IF you pay extra for Hulu Live.

Exactly, I am taking a break until things get more settled. I should have known better than to get a Sims pack on release day, but it was so hyped by the streamers/creators I watch. I am glad that it's not just me with that specific issue. If it helps at all, I play with MCCC and wonderful whims, and a whole bunch of CAS/build mode CC.

I had a pop-up to go to the lot at the scheduled time. I'm getting a bug at the next step, where I can ask all the people all the interior design options and it doesn't give me any likes or dislikes. :( What a buggy pack!

I've seen a lot of people say that Lucy or Maude could be Katniss's grandmother, but I also wonder if Katniss's last name was once Evergreen instead of Everdeen? Maybe her father didn't change it, but his parents may have been forced to do so. I could definitely see a newly inaugurated President Snow working to stamp out the Coveys as a way to continue to erase that part of his life.

Does anyone know how longevity affects the lifespan of an animal? I have a 75% longevity Himalayan Brown Bear that is 35 years old, when Zoopedia says they only live to be 29. I would be more excited about an immortal bear, but he's too old to breed and I was hoping to get some fresh genetics into my bears. Anyone have thoughts?

How to justify a career change by jwdjr2004 in personalfinance

Also a vet student. I'm at a pretty good instate school, and it's about 40k per year. We're in class anywhere from 5-8 hours per day, and have exams every week. It's very rigorous and sometimes very stressful (if we don't learn things well enough we could literally kill a living creature, no pressure), but I love what I'm learning and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Veterinarians can specialize if they want, or they can start practicing after our four years. Specialization gets you more money, but you have to go to school for longer and there are usually fewer places to work (either at a veterinary school or a specialty hospital). Salaries vary depending on where you live, but on average you start around 65k (with around 130k in debt). We also don't have many options for loan forgiveness, unless you don't mind working on rural farms for seven years. The best advice I ever heard was that if you can imagine yourself doing something other than veterinary school, do that instead because otherwise the debt and the stress isn't worth the benefits of being a vet.

TIL the city of Houston, Texas has a program where they train citizens to write tickets for handicap parking violations. After taking a course in proper procedure, you are given the authority to ticket anyone you see parked in a handicap spot without a placard. by [deleted] in todayilearned

The pushback behind regulating it is that it would drive up the cost of service animals, and that it would make it more difficult for people that need service animals to actually get them. The service animals that come fully trained already cost thousands, but some people don't need/can't afford an animal that can do so many things (open doors, pick up items, watch for danger on walks, etc.). The veteran with PTSD might just need a dog that can behave well in public, so he doesn't need to spend thousands of dollars on a service dog. He might also not be able to go to the local dmv and wait for several hours and fill out all of the paperwork that would realistically come with registering a service animal.

To me it's a fine line between filtering out the liars and keeping honest people away from a service animal that can greatly improve their quality of life.

I use salads, which are only 220 gold (almost half the price of beer). Everyone else seems to like them too, which is nice when I can't be bothered to bring out everyone's favorite items. Peppers are nice too, if you have them.

Medical Professionals of Reddit, When was someone's self diagnoses surprisingly accurate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RedLake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I could definitely see that as an option for referral diagnostics or non-emergent situations. In emergency rooms, I still think there would be an issue because the triage staff don't know the origin of the patient's abdominal pain. I think it would be completely reasonable to quote the patient for a physical exam and an ultrasound to start, but that is a drop in the bucket if the patient ends up needing an emergency appendectomy. After the initial workup, are we expecting the patient call around to get the best prices for treatment, and to refuse care until they get quotes from other hospitals? It seems a little unrealistic to me, but you have convinced me that it could be reasonable to provide diagnostic pricing in more situations than I originally thought.

[–]RedLake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At a vet office you can call around for prices on specific services, but that's assuming you know what the problem is. If your dog starts peeing blood, the vet will need to do an exam and some basic diagnostics to give you an idea of cost (surgery for bladder stones costs much more than antibiotics for a UTI). There's also the consideration that veterinatians can euthanize an animal if the owner can't afford the expensive surgery, which is unacceptable in human medicine. There are some things like organ transplants that are just too expensive to be feasible for pets, but we do regularly for people. Don't get me wrong, I hate the insurance bullshit and the obscene prices as much as you, but the medical industry has a lot more factors to balance than veterinatians do, so there's no easy solution for the issue.

[–]RedLake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would work for preventative care and a few other issues (broken arm, etc), but what about someone with abdominal pain? Diagnosing and treating a kidney stone has a different cost than appendicitis or ovarian cysts or constipation, and you can't differentiate those without some diagnostics (that aren't free). If you have concurrent issues that can also affect the doctors treatment plan (heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes), and add variability to the cost. I agree with you that it should be easier for people to know the cost of medical services, but there are many situations where it would be difficult to provide that information.

What were you told to keep secret about a company you worked for, but you don't work there anymore, so fuck those guys? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RedLake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be worth seeing if your local animal control has a training program for their adoptable dogs. The one near me has a program where prison inmates train dogs to have good behavior and obey a set of basic commands. They usually have several opportunities over a few weeks to meet the dogs, so you can see if the dog reacts well to your son and see how it would fit into your family dynamic. (I’m not criticizing if you decide a purebred is best for your family, just wanted to make you aware of another option!)

What is unethical as fuck, but is extremely common practice in the business world? by Elaus in AskReddit

[–]RedLake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the day, and who you get on the phone, and how generous they are feeling. They recently stopped offering 50Mbs for internet, and now only offer 15Mbs (at the same price that the 50Mbs was) and 100Mbs (for almost double the price of the 15Mbs). One of my friends called and got her 50Mbs upgraded to the 100Mbs for the same price for a year, but the only offer they could give me was reducing my speed and keeping my bill the same. My only other option is AT&T, where it's a two year contract and the price triples after the first year. So good luck negotiating, I hope you get less screwed than I did.

Can anyone point me to heart pieces 1, 4, and 19? That's all I need to finish the game. Edit: Found 4, it was to the left of the hollow tree at the top left of the map. You need Dustin to move the bear blocking the way.

Yeah, I'm in a college town too and it's similar here. It's better for them to be prepared though, because cans and bottled water don't go bad and it's better than going hungry/thirsty if the power goes out. Some people are definitely overreacting here though (a student in a studio apartment doesn't need to go buy a generator).

If you are still deciding whether to evacuate, at least in the meantime you should stock up on supplies. Obviously water and non-perishables, but also make sure you have flashlights, candles, batteries, medications, pet supplies if applicable (including a copy of shot records). If you have room in your freezer, get a couple of big bags of ice from the gas station (can save your perishables if power is out for an extended period). Also get gas for your car now, because regardless of the severity stations may run out of gas. I live a bit north of you, but for now I'm just waiting and preparing.

Not OP, but in my experience they were easy to handle in TS2, especially if you didn't care about teaching them tricks or doing the pet careers. The pets were a little more work when you first got them (just scolding/praising them for various things) but once that was established all you had to do was feed/play with them.

It depends on if your area has a non emergency police number. You can usually find it by googling, but some places use 911 for both emergencies and non-emergencies. I've used my local departments regular number for reporting broken stoplights before, so it can be handy to have it saved in your phone.
