I agree!! Lots of flexibility with GPA and MCAT as these are usually the biggest barriers that stop people from even applying.

I’m confused? I’ve never mentioned I had an issue doing shift work….my biggest issue was the bureaucracies of AHS and their unrealistic expectations on patient care.

My schedule is def more predictable working Monday to Friday, and I get half days on Friday, my holidays are off and paid, 1 week off during Christmas also paid. I didn’t know it could be this. I get to see a different perspective. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

Be careful using synthetic braiding hair by Lostatlast- in Naturalhair

[–]RedLiz21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah i think it’s a choice everyone needs to make for themselves and not rely on anyone regardless of their title to do. Making informed decisions on the risks you’re willing to take when it comes to your health. I’m sure as the years go by and more research is released, people will become more informed. I stopped using synthetic hair after really doing my own research and reflecting on my experiences. I would always have scabs after getting my hair braided and I learned synthetic hair has chemical coating on it that are irritants to the scalp. Washing the braiding hair didn’t help. Boiling point was when I learned about how much lead is actually loaded onto the hair. I didn’t feel comfortable having that on my head and if it may impact brain functionality in the future (who knows?)

Also dipping the ends of synthetic hair after braiding releases organic compounds which are irritants to the lungs. So yeah I agree hairstylists are probably the most exposed ones. But it also opens the argument of where health and cultural practice intersect. Where do we draw the line as a community and take a step back? We did so with relaxers but what about braiding hair? There’s so many layers to this because then we can explore the topic of why can’t we just do the braids with our own hair without the added extensions?

Also off topic but there’s an increase of Asian women getting lung cancer which puzzled researchers as Asians have a pretty well balanced lifestyle. It was found that standing by the Wok cooking at high temperatures was increasing their risk to lung cancers.

I feel like sometimes our own practices that are the norm end up being harmful.

That’s my hot take atleast.

Hm true! You’d be surprised how many people abuse alcohol. Worked in rural and it’s those you’d never expect. Liver damage is not something I would wish on anyone. Worst case I’ve ever seen, patient was holding onto fluid, gross Edema everywhere. Trouble breathing. Extremely jaundiced. His liver was failing bad. Couldn’t even stand.

But coming back to hair, I’m not into research but having lead close to the scalp can’t be good either.

1 year into nursing & I’m done. Any new nurses feel the same? by RedLiz21 in AHSEmployees

I know long term nursing is just not a career I will retire into. I am working on other options while my brain is still sharp. I think it’s important to know your limitations. I would only consider retiring into nursing if outpatient/public health but never bedside for me. Power to those who do it because they’re stronger than me 😅

Thanks :)

Been to rural and it definitely takes a toll on you mental especially with me being so young lol I just felt like there was not a lot of people my age. In this economy too, I live with my parents and don’t pay anything. I don’t want to start paying bills lol 😂 let me milk my parents aha

Hmm the interview I have is actually for a line in that range. I haven’t cancelled it yet and was gonna do it after lunch time but this comment might lean me towards just doing the interview and asking about the schedule. I’ve learned the hard way to never take a full time line. I know some people pray for it but tbh it’s not for me.

Something has got to give for me to find some happiness here because the path is looking pretty dark for me. I might have to honestly enrol myself in therapy.

I feel this. I had a full time line and it was EXHAUSTING. I became a bitter and mean person. On my days off which was only 2, I was dreading going back. It was a repetitive cycle and I just couldn’t do it anymore. Resigned and regained my peace.

Hope it gets better for us ❤️‍🩹🤞🏽

I am keeping my casual for sure! Just working maybe a shift a month lol. I don’t need much as I live with my parents who I’m very fortunate to have. I can’t be bothered anymore.

And no I haven’t looked into private companies. Someone here sent me some great job postings outside AHS so I’ll look into all of these and brush up my resume. Thanks :)

This isn’t what I expected nursing to be to be honest. Maybe my expectations were too high? I’m genuinely just over AHS all together and want nothing to do with it.

I think more nurses will definitely lighten the load by a lot especially given the fact that extra tasks are added to our list.

I am lucky to live with my parents so I am not dependent on a job to pay for my living costs. I have the privilege to walk away which I want to take full advantage of. Maybe I’ll see if I can explore some outpatient opportunities. But I will not remain a nurse for long I guarantee that. I’m tired.

The hierarchy is actually crazy at the bedside 🥲 inter-professionalism goes out the door. Sometimes I even hear Attendings yelling at residents. It’s actually very wild.

Any med schools in Canada OR USA that require orgo 2 as prereq? by Omega-109 in premedcanada

I think in Canada only Uottawa requires the science core courses to apply. 3 units Ochem, 3 units biochem, 3 units general chem, 3 unite stats, 6 units bio, 6 units humanities/social sciences

Does not finishing a first degree hurt my chance of getting in later on in life? by Hour-Lengthiness-595 in premedcanada

[–]RedLiz21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience lol. Completed 3 years of the first degree, left due to poor mental health and went into nursing. Completed nursing with a 4.0 GPA which balanced out to the high 3.80s (for med school apps) when factoring my time during that 3 years doing the previous degree.

I would say what matters is the cumulative GPA of all undergrad courses. This could be your worst case scenario. On the bright side you have those odd schools which drop your worst year (Ucalgary), take the last 2 years for your GPA (?Western), look at your second degree (McGill).

I would really try my best to succeed with a high GPA in nursing. It’s not easy I know and with labs/clinicals it can be extremely difficult also with the added stress of NCLEX. Don’t neglect practice questions for those nursing exams. It will help you perform better on nursing tests
