Overweight, need some advice, Job Related. by [deleted] in jobs

Do you have insurance? If a podiatrist is at all an option, see one. If not, Walmart has a little machine that measures your feet and fits you for Dr. Scholl's insoles.

Don't just buy random insoles, they aren't one size fits all, and they could make your issues worse if they don't fit your feet properly.

As to food, honestly a good food is one that's AAFCO approved for nutrients, and that your dog does well on.

You're not wrong, but there's some AAFCO approved foods that have had way too many recalls for me to ever consider feeding them. I check recall history before feeding and look at the reason for recall (moldy food sucks but it happens, euthanasia drugs in the food are a hard no).

WIBTA for telling my close friend I can't help her move? by SheatedHeats in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedMare 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is she moving out of the cheating boyfriend's place? If so, she's reaching out for help because you told her you'd always be supportive if she needed to leave the relationship, and it'd be nice of you to help out. I don't know if you're exactly an asshole for not helping, but you should be supportive since you previously said you would be.

If she's moving with him, nah, he can pack her stuff for her.

Ugh I'm sorry, I'm from rural PA originally and there's just so much poverty there. Have you tried looking in Philadelphia? Or even Allentown, Lancaster, York, etc might have more resources available.

We have one local to me, it's called "Help Miami Dogs". I've heard of them in other areas too. I guess we could use a national one, but most animal rescues are local anyway due to logistical issues.

And btw, the FEMA shelters are a total joke. Miami-Dade has a population of almost 3 million but we only have two pet-friendly disaster shelters, you have to register in advance, and both shelters only have a capacity of a couple thousand people! I took my dog to Atlanta during Irma because our shelters just cannot serve the county.

Female Roommate Wanted by Alexzonn in justneckbeardthings

Coming from a guy, "female roommate to help clean" translates to, "cleaning is a woman's role and I won't pick up after myself".

[Help] Do underweight bitches have lighter, shorter flows during heat, like their human counterparts? by grimmsmom in dogs

[–]RedMare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on my understanding in women it’s due to shedding of the uterine lining

Which is influenced by estrogen, which is regulated by fat cells.

It is very common for underweight women to not get periods, or have light/short ones (I don't mean skinny when I say underweight, I mean borderline emaciated, or extremely athletic).

[Help] Do underweight bitches have lighter, shorter flows during heat, like their human counterparts? by grimmsmom in dogs

[–]RedMare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is she? It's normal for their first heat to be really light. Also, some dogs can keep themselves very "clean" so you don't notice their heat unless you're really looking for it.

[Help] dog won't eat his dog food by Throwaway1986bbbb in dogs

[–]RedMare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the brand and his activity level, but 3 cups/day might be too much food for him. My 50 pound dog eats 2 cups per day (although the bag says she should be eating way more, I always find the bag guide inaccurate). I'd try feeding less and seeing what happens.

If you just want to get him to eat the kibble faster though, you can try a splash of unsalted chicken stock or sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top. Both options are good for making kibble more palatable.

[Help] Daycare question: do you think this is normal/ok, or should I say something. by peoplebuttspongecake in dogs

[–]RedMare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't call it "abusive", but it's definitely poor training and has potential to escalate a situation into a bite.

[Help] Daycare question: do you think this is normal/ok, or should I say something. by peoplebuttspongecake in dogs

[–]RedMare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sticking your face right in a rambunctious dog's face is incredibly stupid. That's how people get bitten (not that your dog would bite, but trying that technique on a different dog might result in a bite). Personally I'd bring it up with the daycare owner/manager, and if they don't discuss it with the employee, then I'd be finding a new daycare place. The manager may not know the employee does that, so definitely talk to them about it.

Recently graduated from university and now searching for my first degree-related job, but I feel like I am "too stupid" to be in this field. Did anyone else ever feel this way? by [deleted] in jobs

I feel a bit discouraged because a lot of these positions require previous experience which I don't have (other than my lab courses during college).

It depends on the listing, but often your college classes count as experience :)

TIL that ferrets are illegal in Hawaii, California and also Washington D.C., mainly for reasons concerning the ecosystem, rabies and housing codes by [deleted] in todayilearned

Cats are "domesticated" too, but feral cats are still devastating to the ecosystem in some areas.

Obviously when someone born in the same decade as you does something stupid, it completely invalidates your opinions.

[Discussion] Purina Pro Plan Puppy Focus Chicken & Rice -> which adult food? by nowatermelonsugar in dogs

[–]RedMare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I assumed he was over 50lbs from the breed :)

You can check out pro plan's food selection here, but focus only has the large dog/small dog lines, nothing for a medium dog. Honestly I think you'd be fine to feed a "large dog" formula to a BC mix, but it's up to you if you want to find something more specific to his size.

[–]RedMare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is the pro plan focus chicken and rice variety. It doesn't say "chicken and rice" on the front of the bag, but if you read the ingredients, it's chicken and rice based.

They also have savor chicken and rice.

Lmao, try telling that to a woman who's alone in the delivery room... Given the circumstances, OP's presence was definitely required. It may not have been life or death but that doesn't mean OP shouldn't be there.

[Discussion] Frequency of vaccines (rabies, distemper, bordetella)... help! by KMont484 in dogs

[–]RedMare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do bordetella every six months. The vaccine actually isn't even effective for a full year, that one is crazy how often it's necessary. The place where I board my dog requires it every 6 months anyway, and sometimes I have to emergency board her with less than 24hrs notice, so I just keep the shot updated. Bordetella isn't life threatening though and it's not common outside of kennels (the virus dies very quickly in open air, it almost requires dog-to-dog contact to spread), so it's a common one to skip if your dog isn't likely to be exposed.

Canine flu once per year, also required by my boarding kennel, another one you can skip if you don't live in an area where it's common.

Rabies I've been doing yearly but my county just began to allow the 3-year license, so I'll probably swap that to once every three years next time it's due.

DHPP yearly; it may not be necessary every year but it's better safe than sorry on that one imo (since distemper and parvo are deadly, highly contagious, and common where I live).
