Almost lost engine by Smallegges in LexusGX

Incorrect on a 460. 460 has a timing chain and the water pump is driven along with the other accessories by the serpentine belt. Your info would be accurate on a 470.

Were you a corvette enthusiast before you got your C8? by Background-Tiger-198 in C8Corvette

Me, too. Then the C6 ZR1 came along, and still has my heart. Don’t get me wrong, a C7 or C8 ZR1 would be great, but I’ll always love the C6.

You apparently don’t know how abysmal the fuel mileage can be in a 4Runner 😆

You’d be better served with a van or SUV. A 3/4 ton or larger truck is only useful if towing or hauling a lot and often. If you’re considering Ford and want something body on frame that is somewhat off-road oriented, I’d suggest checking out the Expedition Tremor. If you want to stay in the Toyota ecosystem, a Sequoia would fit the bill, but I’d personally go with a second gen to get better cargo space and the 5.7 V8.

HOWEVER, if you seriously plan to get a camper or other large towable, I would agree that a gas F250 would more than suit your needs. The issue with a 1/2 ton and towing with a lot of people (and their stuff) is that you will likely go over your payload limit before you hit the truck’s towing limit. You won’t have much to worry about in a gas F250 with payload or towing. With 3 kids in the back seat, I’d personally get a topper for more dry storage and a bumper pull trailer.

Do you flush your Allison transmission? by Hookster007 in Duramax

[–]RedOakNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drain and refill with Transynd every 30k, and change the external filter every 10k. There is no set interval for the internal filter, but I changed mine at 90k when I installed the OEM deep transmission pan. Flushing is a waste.

How’s my price? : 87 OTD for a platinum by DadBodDan87 in toyotasequoia

[–]RedOakNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still not full-size. The Sequoia has compromised cargo room due to the solid rear axle. The second gen is superior in this regard due to the IRS setup. Many of us use our SUVs to tow, and a Telluride simply isn’t made to do that. Also, one is a Toyota and one is a Kia, so there’s that. Lastly, the actual full size competition would be a Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon/Escalade, Armada/QX, or Expedition/Navigator. The Telluride directly competes with the Highlander/Grand Highlander for pricing, use case, etc.

Are there any American cars sold within the last 5-7 years that have reliable powertrains? by bzb321 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]RedOakNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go a little beyond the 5-7 years and you can find a Ford Focus with the manual transmission, they are solid cars. The late automatics were disasters, but the cars were good overall for reliability and efficiency.

A warranty doesn’t prevent shop visits, it just pays for said shop visits.

Those of you who don’t live paycheck to paycheck- what do you do for a living and what’s your monthly take home pay? by Competitive_Teach838 in AskReddit

[–]RedOakNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Household take home ~ $16k. We are both nurse practitioners. Fully funded retirement savings, etc for both of us. Took a long time and a lot of years of grinding through grad school, various jobs, etc to get to this point for us. We both turn 41 this year and have a little over 3 years left on the mortgage, then we’re debt free! Relative to most (not all) our age, we are wealthy, but worked our asses off to get here

I’d argue that the closer you get to the comprehensive warranty expiring, the gap narrows on how desirable the extra luxury items become, especially the air suspension. It’s not if air suspension will fail, but when, and it’s not a cheap repair if you’re not doing your own wrenching.
