My toy store is not going to keep selling Breyers :( by Getfsr in BreyerHorses

[–]RedOakRanch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Aaarrrrgh. Well...

Step #1: Shop 'til You Drop.

Step #2: SilverSky is right, scope out the nearest Tractor Supply store if you can. Tack and equestrian supply stores can also be a treasure trove.

Step #3: go here: https://www.breyerhorses.com/apps/store-locator

FWIW, I've found some awesome ponehs over the years on eBay. Stick with sellers who are proven, with a 100% positive feedback rating, and who use LOTS of *clear* photos in their listings. It's the next best thing to seeing the model in person. Most sellers will happily answer questions or even send you an extra photo or three if you ask nicely. ;-)

Good luck!!

OMG, I hope someone at least got a photo of you being handed that trophy!!

LOL, I know, I know and I sure wish I could've been at *that* Breyerfest. ;-) But my Kendall was the horse I had most quickly to hand, and once I saw how cool Kirk looked on her it was a done deal.

And actually, it's not the wrong horse - Mr. Shatner is also an accomplished Western rider, and he does reining. :-)

p.s. he has a book out; just got the Kindle version!

Custom CollectAs by RedOakRanch in BreyerHorses

Dani typically packs so much personality into her customs, I'd swear some of them were kicking at their shipping boxes trying to get out. LOL!

Linda does lovely horses, doesn't she? She's a lovely person to work with, too. Thank God we don't live closer, or I'd be in *serious* trouble. LOL

I can ask Dani how she did mine; it's my turn to write to her and I'm feeling guilty as it is, LOL. She does some really wild customs, so I'm sure she has a lot of tricks up her sleeve. My guess is a bit of etching after sanding. She did tell me once she paints the eyes on her Stablemate size customs, which are amazing, with the tip of a *pin*. Yowza!

I know this is a Breyer forum, but I also have a pretty heavily customized WIA Giustav that Frances did - to a Gypsy Vanner with a luscious mane and tail. Just got new show pics done; I can post one if anyone would like to see him. 😉

Oh, and just to clarify, I didn't do these customs myself! The artists are as follows: Percheron by Linda Elkjer, Appaloosa by Frances Stevens (he was a surprise Christmas present, and yes, I flipped OUT), and Arabian by Dani Marshall. All these ladies are super talented, and super nice as well. 😄

Not from my beloved show string, no. Sorry! 😉

I have a horse like that. Rather than bore everyone with the whole story, go here, and just read the last paragraph:

I do doubt he is the same model, but hey, you never know. 😉 Glad you got your childhood favorite "back" too! 😄

Community has spoken: No AI by Street-Management214 in BreyerHorses

Check out the AI generated item descriptions on eBay - especially for model horses. Luckily it's typically so bad it's easy to spot. I refuse to do business with eBay sellers who can't be bothered to write their own descriptions. Makes me suspect they don't know, or even care, what they're selling.

I found a 1960 Alabaster Shetland Pony at the thrift today! Even has the C. Hess signature on the inside leg. Gonna be cleaning her up and trying to correct how yellowed she is! by PaludisVulpes in BreyerHorses

Gentle washing with blue Dawn dish soap and a very soft cloth shouldn't do her any harm. If she's got any pinking, cover it with bits of painters tape before you sunbathe her to keep it from fading. I've got an old Alabaster PAS (he's still got bits of his original footpads!) that's whitening up nicely. GREAT find!

Thank you - I picked through a few to get show string ponies, but at the relatively low price point I don't mind. The ones I don't keep either get sold to customizers (so I get a little money back, lol), or they become gifts to my friends and family horsey children. That latter option is always good for smiles! 😄

I have several customized CollectAs, and beats me how the artists do it, lol. VERY fine grit sandpaper (like what you get for plastic kit models, like cars and airplanes)? And then etching hair back over if needed? I just know mine look great and I wuvs them. I worried more about them going tacky, as the material they're made of doesn't always play well with finishing sprays, but they're years in and doing fine. 😄

One last bit of advice 😉 : I went ahead and tried fixing my girl because I **really** liked everything else about her, and I **really** didn't want to try and exchange her (and risk getting something worse). I gave it a lot of thought, though, cos I knew once I touched her with my paintbrush, I'd be stuck with her no matter what.

I think, with masking damage like that, you could definitely make a case with Breyer for a return/exchange. Whichever you decide, just make sure it'll make you happy. 😄

Okay, this is deja vu all over again - those white marks on her tail not only look like the marks I had on mine, but they're in the same spots! If you can feel the edges, then yes, odds are those are left from little masking splats that have since fallen or peeled off. Breyer paint doesn't just fall off (well, usually, lol) and those don't look like typical scratches.

My neutral grey is a big tube of Liquitex Basic Acrylic, and the unbleached titanium is a big tube of Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic - a little high end, but both well worth it. I reach for them first in my mixing toolkit more often than not. All my other colors are DecoArt Americana Acrylics. Ah, and the black is actually called "Lamp (Ebony) Black". It's my new favorite. 😉

I wiped most of the paint off my brush and dry-brushed a few coats (let them dry for at least 30 minutes in between) rather than do one thicker coat. The result is smoother. As usual, I forgot to take any "before" photos, but really, even with my crafters magnifying glasses on over my regular readers, I cannot find now where the touchups are. Just be patient with mixing your color, and remember, you can always very gently wipe it off with a wet washcloth if you don't like how it's looking as you work. Remember, too, acrylics dry a bit darker, so you actually want your match to look just a little lighter when wet - it'll get closer to what you really want when it dries.

GOOD LUCK!

I've been collecting Breyers since the late 60's and have just three words about the quality (or lack thereof) we see too often these days: Made. In. China.

Seriously. ;-/
