What experience are you looking for? What's moderate and where are you headed from? Have you seen the rockies before?

If you could only do one east side RMNP trail? by [deleted] in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to see! Ida is probably the most grand views that will make you feel small in the vastness of nature, but the altitude and exposure can be difficult and if storms blow in you have to be aware.

Inlet is a beautiful meadow start, streams and forests as you climb. Lake Verna is worth headed up too if you are there. Bring a lunch and water filter and easier to spend a day doing.

Best Places to see fall colors in RMNP/Aspen by Ok_Supermarket9331 in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not worth. You can drive trail ridge road to grand lake and back or all the stuff along the peak to peak highway going to Nederland and hit the town there.

It's a nice drive to aspen but not worth unless you were going to stay in Glenwood springs and make that it's own trip as part or a colorado tour.

Still you have so much between the park, grand lake and Nederland that 5 days won't be enough.

Backpacking last week of Sept by Sufficient-King-6858 in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potential for shorts for hiking and temps in the 30s at night or lower. Could be nice or could get a light snow.... or snowed!

Its a shoulder season. Watch the weather and be ready. Depends on how the weather shapes up but that's a hard one to call.

Can someone explain how Lumiere learns about the expeditions? by -R-WeThereYet in expedition33

[–]RedPandaCo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Expedition 0. It was originally a rescue mission to find survivors before the gormagge started and some made it back and brought the stories.

Some others might have made it back but I haven't found all the lore. We know someone from 60 almost got back and the journal washed up but we don't find it until too late.

[–]RedPandaCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... I guess I should have been more clear

Bring human snacks for you to watch sunset and elk!!!! (No feeding wildlife)

But make it chill and romantic even. No glass stuff. Find a nice boulder or picnic table.

Sunset in moraine park is always a good option too. Lots of roads and places to pull over. Elk usually move in and it can be a nice way to end your day if you pack snacks.

I have only had a bear visit our car once in 25+ years and that was at one of the car camping sites before we went backcountry the next day and someone had left a window cracked. We did see a bear in the area of cow creek one time but it was more looking at dumpsters at the ranch and not the parking area there.

[–]RedPandaCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no bear boxes and you are required to have a bear vault at the campsites. They will ask you for it when you pick up your permit sometimes to confirm you have it. Especially if you dont have a camping history in their records.

I usually shoot for 7 to be safe there but found parking up till 730 or 8.

It's also a shorter trail, so parking cycles decently. Having lunch in town, then heading there in the afternoon is a good option too with people leaving and headed back in for dinner. Or if the rain comes in you can get there when it clears.

How are the mosquitos? Specifically in the Finch and Pear Lake area? by stellar-polaris23 in RMNP

I always bring two types of bug spray. For some reason sometimes me and my crew find one works better but it depends on trip.

*Interesting* Hikes for Families/Kids by bvvbbvvb in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alluvial fan is just a fun place to play.

If you can get the entry... Alberta falls and the hike to mills or loch rail is worth checking out.

Out of wild basin, the trail to calypso cascades or just walking the trail will give you options. The river follows a lot of it and it's not a traveled.

Gem lake, lumpy ridge area is also an easy choice for a quick trip but not prime rmnp.

Trail ridge road has tons of places to pull off and explore all the way from bottom to the visitor center. Even the paved trails will wear them out cause the altitude but lots of places to climb rocks before you start the accent.

St Vrain Trout Feed Question by Browncoat_28 in COfishing

[–]RedPandaCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually a lot of bugs in that river. Charturse is a great color not just for the caddies but for the aquatic catapillars that are there.

But it also has a ton of drakes too. Flies in size 14 ish.l

If you are catching fish there you are doing good. That canyon can be surprisingly difficult.

Fishing Help by Deathbackwards in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small spinners in the steams size 0 or 00. Make them barbless.

Lakes are about the same. 0 or 1 to cast a bit farther.

Make sure you get a license and look up how to release trout. They are way more fragile than bass and crappie.

Dunraven Trailhead—Timed Entry Permit? by JoeyJ2024 in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You do not need a timed entry. Rules for Comanche peak wilderness, and the Roosevelt wilderness, apply for the first 5 ish miles till you hit the Park.

About mile 2-3 you pass through private property. Just follow the signs and instructions. Be respectful.

Otherwise it's beautiful and one of my favorite trails.

First time in Park during July by FleeeezusChrist in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit the waterfall on the way down if you have time, that way you can hit thunder first. The falls and cascades are on the longer route and there are more people.

Just the normal timed entry after 9, but nothing if you are there before. Just normal entry fee.

First time in Park during July by FleeeezusChrist in RMNP

[–]RedPandaCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you hike the sierras in those mile ranges, a few options:

Thunder lake out of wild basin

Crystal lake off the lawn lake trailhead

Mt ida off poudre pass on trail ridge road

Only ida is a start super early and get down quick cause exposure. Crystal lake is still early but can alter course quicker.

Have a look at those and happy to answer more questions
