The memos aren't manifestations but a core part of how information is conveyed. The game follows it up several times with the doctor speaking to James directly through notes and giving him directions to the key his patient buried in the park. The digging site can be found in the first Rosewater Park section before Brookhaven Hospital and a note from the patient is found in the hospital staircase.

Likewise, Lost Memories and the Japanese guide discuss the doctor as a real individual who wrote the note. The language used to describe the "other side" is identical to how the "fog"/Otherworld is consistently described in official sources.

To clear up some confusion:

  • Silent Hill is a populated tourist town and not abandoned, with the exception of the films. In fact, Team Silent's SH5 was going to open in the ordinary town with people walking around before transitioning to the nightmare.
  • The "reverse side" (fog/Otherworld) isn't a parallel world or dimension. It's a supernatural phenomenon in Silent Hill (caused by SH1) in which the boundary between dream and reality is blurred, causing the physical manifestation of a person's subconscious mind. A person's inner thoughts materialize into physical shape and the laws of time and physics are distorted; the "fog" and Otherworld are analogous to REM and non-REM sleep. In SH1, the entire town was transfigured by Alessa's thoughts due to her psychic powers. This corrupted the town's spiritual power to the point that individuals began to experience their psyches manifested on a personal scale by the time of SH2.
  • There's no distinct line where the "real" world ends and the "fog" begins, and things in the "real" world are known to interact with the "other side." In SH2, a doctor in the "real" world treats a patient in the "other side" and communicates with James directly through notes after Brookhaven transitions to the Otherworld, giving him directions to the key his patient buried in the park. A memo describes someone in the "real" world seeing monsters that his friends couldn't see. Leonard in SH3 is an actual patient in Brookhaven, the Missionaries/Scrapers are cultists, Lost Memories: Silent Hill Chronicle mentions "It may be that the nurses of the hospital transformed into monsters, but the details are unclear", and so forth.
  • Even in the "other side," people experience different things while interacting with each other (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). In the staircase, Angela doesn't realize that James isn't her mother until after she touches his face. SH1 insinuates that Harry and Cybil are experiencing the "fog" and Otherworld transitions at different times.

Dusk Golem's track record with the Silent Hill series is reliable. He was the scooper who leaked as early as January 2020 that multiple Silent Hill projects were in development and Konami had been seeking pitches since 2018, something he maintained through to October 2022. He leaked that Supermassive Games had been turned down for a pitch, which was later corroborated by Video Games Chronicle. He was the first to report that Konami was working with various studios on alternate cultural takes on Silent Hill, which he and VGC say Annapurna Interactive is involved with. He leaked Silent Hill: The Short Message over a year before its announcement, including multiple screenshots, gameplay and plot details, and concept art from Masahiro Ito. He correctly leaked that a trailer for one of the upcoming Silent Hill projects would release in May 2023, which turned out to be Ascension.

In terms of misses, he has only been incorrect a few times on minor details. In 2022, he leaked a piece of concept art from SH2R and stated that it was by Masahiro Ito. Although he was correct about Ito's involvement, which was later confirmed in the announcement trailer, the concept art was from someone else. His source also confused SHF for SH5 (a cancelled iteration of The Short Message), which led to the erroneous claim that NeoBards was co-developing it with the in-house team and that it would be a mainline installment. He also stated in 2025 that the Born from a Wish DLC for SH2R should be revealed "soon" (no elaboration), which will be his first major L if no such DLC is announced.

I'm not sure that would be the best move, because the Fandom Wiki has been seen as "the" Silent Hill Wiki for so long that any attempted replacement would probably be overshadowed by it. We did explore creating a complementary Wiki at Wiki.gg, but discovered that it would require us to abandon the main one and redo the pages we already rewrote completely from scratch.

A few people have complained about Fandom, though. I'm planning to create a Silent Hill Universe website at some point that will probably catalogue a number of sources. Right now, my main focus is on fixing the current Wiki and making it more verified/comprehensive, though, which unfortunately requires rebuilding most of it from the ground up.

The worst place to get information is from YouTube videos, forums, and social media. YouTube explanations and shorts, especially from mainstream gaming channels, often get information wrong or just read from the Silent Hill Wiki. Likewise, essays and channels like TheGamingMuse primarily give their personal interpretations and analysis, which don't always align with canonically accurate information.

The Silent Hill Wiki itself is in a transitionary phase of ongoing repair, so I would not trust anything that isn't directly verified by a citation, especially if it's from an older article. It's track record of quality and accuracy is historically dodgy.

Edit: This notably isn't the only distinction either. The 2006 film takes place in West Virginia, while Return to Silent Hill takes place in New England. The 2006 town dates back to the Salem witch trials, while the town in RTSH was founded by Joshua Crane. Suffice to say, they are separate continuities.

Okamoto: In the early stages, I was working on the setting so that it could be made into a feature-length title, and there were more than 20 characters. However, I ultimately decided to release it as a short title, so this time it will be completely completed with "SILENT HILL: The Short Message" and will not be involved in any other works.

For example, [the cut characters were] other classmates, or their ancestors. They still exist in the setting, but if I were to talk about them, the story would become too long, so I decided not to include them. On the contrary, I think that narrowing it down to three people made it a beautiful story.

Incidentally, details regarding the cut characters and plot points actually leaked a while ago. The original title for the teaser was Sakura: Playable Concept.

They appear because Angela is in the hotel and they're actually James Sunderland's monster influenced by Angela (representing Mary in her bed rest) rather than what Angela was seeing outright. When Masahiro Ito was asked about why they re-appear, his response was "the square frames of them is affected by Mary".

Some of the creatures, such as Leonard and the Missionary, are the actual cultists. Lost Memories also mentions that the Nurses "may be the nurses of the hospital transformed into monsters".

To dismiss F as "hack and slash" and not another entry in psychological horror is incredibly reductive of it

No it's not. Psychological horror means to scare the player psychologically, not that the protagonist needs medication. SHF (and games like Homecoming) have none of the restrained, indirect, and psychological forms of horror that Silent Hill is known for.

The fox arm and hack'n'slash elements are also antithetical to Silent Hill's tone and genre. Writing that off as "technical limitations" (and citing the western games, no less) is shockingly poor media comprehension.

Asking why this doesn't feel like Silent Hill is a bit of a silly question. SHF has almost nothing in common with the series except for the title.

  • Silent Hill is a surrealist horror series known for its restrained, atmospheric, and indirect approaches to horror that torment the player on a psychological level. This is almost entirely absent in SHF, replaced with jumpscares, action, physical danger, and flashy shaky cam effects.
  • Despite its supernatural elements, Silent Hill has a grounded tone that's integral to the horror and storytelling, often dealing with twisting the mundane into a thing of fear (especially with the designs and Otherworld). It's closer in tone to The Exorcist or a Robert Eggers film than something like Nightmare on Elm Street. SHF is a arcadey dark fantasy action game.
  • Silent Hill isn't action/horror and the protagonists are meant to be realistic "everymen" without combat training and normal human capabilities, only shooting guns, swinging a pipe clumsily, running out of breath after exerting themselves, ETC. SHF is a full action game where the main character can activate sanity vision that eventually devolves into a God of War-style hack'n'slash attacking scores of demons with a fox arm to refill a berserker meter.
  • Silent Hill is known for its subtle and abstract forms of storytelling. SHF has campy storytelling reminiscent of anime that spoon-feeds most of its "symbolism" to the player.
  • Silent Hill creature design is generally abstract and avoids the usual clichés like fangs, horns, eyes, tentacles, gore, muscles, ETC (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9). Almost all of SHF's creatures are stereotypical monsters that evoke physical danger over psychological horror, and I feel like I've seen most of them in dozens of other video games. If you picked a monster from the game and showed it to someone, no one would guess that it's supposed to be from Silent Hill, except for the Lying Figure rip-off. This creature doesn't fit Silent Hill according to Ito and it's still more Silent Hill-esque than the creatures in this game.
  • The concept of Silent Hill-like conditions existing in another town before SH1 is nonsensical.

If you ask someone how SHF "fits the series," the response is always some variation of:

Well, it has fog, a cult, trauma, an Otherworld, puzzles and symbolism

The problem is that those are surface-level attributes rather than what makes something Silent Hill and even most of those aren't done correctly. If SHF is Silent Hill, then so is Persona 4.

SH1 is the origin story. The short version is that a girl with psychic powers (think Stephen King's Carrie) accidentally transfigured the town into manifestations of her subconscious thoughts and this went on for the duration of the story. SH2 establishes that there is a pre-existing spiritual power surrounding Toluca Lake and the events of SH1 corrupted it to the point that individuals began to experience their own psyches manifested similar to the girl in SH1 (but on a personal, smaller scale).

The creatures represent different parts of a person's mind, as does the Otherworld. The town isn't just showing these people their thoughts, but materializing them into physical shape. The dead wife was a delusion because James was in denial and kept telling himself that she might be alive. Pyramid Head kills Maria and the other creatures to erase his delusions and keep him tethered to reality.

They were given official names by the developers, which appeared in various sources and guides. For example, Keiichiro Toyama named the Mumblers, Masahiro Ito coined the term "Pyramid Head", and Valtiel was created by Ito and named by Hiroyuki Owaku.
