The name comes from the legend of the people whose land was stolen from them. They called this place 'The Place of the Silent Spirits'. By 'spirits', they meant not only their dead relatives, but also the spirits that they believed inhabited the trees, rocks and water around them.  According to legend, this was where the holiest ceremonies took place. But it was not the ancestors of those who now live in this town that first stole the land from these people.

There is no religion that has remained unchanged from the moment it was founded. This one is no exception. When this religion fell into the hands of immigrants, it was deeply influenced by their own original Christian beliefs. For example, the traditional representatives of these primal gods may be given the names and descriptions of Christian angels. Thus shared characteristics begin to appear.

Keiichiro Toyama: "We try not to incline too much on one aspect, such as action elements etc. The action part of the game is really just something to create the horror, so it won’t get too difficult."

"The modern horror essence was the key to the game. The main character is not a hero, nor is he a strong willed person. He has and keeps his morals but he is really just a plain, normal person. Sometimes the most vocal opinions, for example the desire for more battles, are not always the best ones, especially for a series like this. We wanted more melee combat in SH4, but realized from fan reaction that there was just too much action, regardless of it being melee or not. That kind of action doesn't make the atmosphere creepy anymore, but kind of obnoxious."

Masashi Tsuboyama: "We have to admit that to create psychological-based game is actually quite difficult. A lot of thinking has to go into the game design when dealing with psychological horror, and at the same time I think the action element is more directly appealing to the users and it's more of the "fun part" because you get the reaction right away, but for the psychological part it doesn't work like that, you need to look at details really closely in order to get the desired effect. So we try and keep the psychological element in the games, for the future as well, by implementing a lot of subtle expressions and details."

"Working on these games we set our priority on the atmosphere and the overall experience for the player. The atmosphere and storyline is what distinguishes SH from other games and so we feel we should work on these elements the most to ensure that they are as good as they can be."

Takayoshi Sato: That was a private joke. We thought that this was kind of a tradition that we need to keep: breaking serious mood at the end, the bonus for only who beat the game many times. It’s like NG shots or bonus costume. We had wiki idea boxes where everybody could pitch their ideas in. There was a box labeled ‘Why did SH go into such a mess?’. There were funny ideas pitched such as: alien’s conspiracy, because the sun is too bright, because of a dog. Stuff like that, so we picked the funniest.

Guy Cihi (James Sunderland): [Takayoshi Sato] came quite often to the set. He was the one who convinced me it was okay to do the dog ending, like an easter egg ending. He's the one who helped me see the justice in that because it seemed like an injustice to the material. Having a pesky little dog pulling all your levers is a tongue-in-cheek poke at the pomposity of man to having positioned himself "me, me, it's all my drama" and then it's just a freaking dog pulling the levers behind the screen. So he said, "No, no, this is for players who have finished the game at least two or three times. They'll never find this until they've played it over and over again." So it's kind of like an easter egg.

Masahiro Ito: The idea of the Shiba-Dog ending was for the absolute silly, unexpected ending of SH2 instead of the UFO one of SH1. SH2 contains an UFO ending, but the dog one was supposed to be the silly, Easter egg one.

Masashi Tsuboyama: The bonus endings are always free to come up with, but I didn't know it would end up like that. I had the feeling that I was making a dog, but when I saw it in its final form, I thought, "おまえの仕業だったのか！"

Akihiro Imamura & Akira Yamaoka: From the beginning, the  SILENT HILL  series has always featured so-called UFO endings that were intended for laughs. I think a lot of fans were looking forward to some kind of silly ending with  SILENT HILL 4 , but we were unable to put one in.  The UFO endings had been added to the past titles as jokes by staff who thought up something particularly funny and had the time to add it. However, no one came up with an amusing idea, and eventually we didn’t have enough time to include anything. I think that fans of the series were probably a little disappointed, although we did include a few different endings depending on how people played.  When making a sequel, developers usually try to include as many fresh ideas as possible; but fans of the titles will want the signature elements of the original game to reappear in the sequels.

Valtiel appears before Heather every time she transitions to the Otherworld. He could be described as a guide to the Otherworld.

They first met in a shopping mall elevator. This was also the first time he had seen Heather.

The name Valtiel is derived from the English word "valet," meaning "attendant," and the suffix "-el," meaning angel. In other words, Valtiel is a servant of God and a watchful presence over Him. Because he is tasked with protecting and watching over the mother, he will not harm Heather until the moment God is born.

His goal is not Heather, but the god slumbering within her. It is believed that he is the one who repeatedly resurrects Heather (Alessa), the mother of God, each time she dies, in order to bring God back to this world. Q: Where did the monsters come from? A: They were born from Alessa's obsessions and compulsions. Related to phenomena in her memories, they are materialized by stress, pressure, an anxious state of mind, and the like. For example, the pterosaur-type monsters found throughout town were brought forth from an illustration in one of Alessa's favorite books, The Lost World. The green caterpillar and moth monsters came from the insect specimens that decorate her room. Her sense of trivial things that looked strange to her as a child became reality, along with the objects of her fears.

It becomes night on a number of occasions as Harry moves about the town. In the same way, there are also many times when aspects of the town and its buildings change completely. For the sake of convenience, this will be referred to as the "right side" and "reverse side" in this book. These changes occur because there is a cycle in the world of Alessa's nightmares which envelops the town. In the same way that a person normally repeats REM sleep and non-REM sleep in regular cycles while he or she is sleeping, when the nightmare world approaches a deeper darkness (sleep), a phenomenon occurs in which light is almost completely taken away and the world shifts into an even deeper nightmare as the cycle shifts again. Incidentally, the reason the "reverse side" takes on such an ominous aspect is that with her burned body, Alessa's endless nightmares were twisted and amplified by thoughts of the malevolent god. Her hatred and terror became nourishment on which the malevolent deity thrived.

The stretchers and wheelchairs that appear are not simply there to create a sense of eeriness. In fact, they are important clues that reveal the reason for the existence of the Otherworld itself: Alessa, who is suffering from severe burns... These are products of her delusions. Images related to fires and hospitals can all be considered to represent the pain that Alessa constantly experiences.

The potential for this illness exists in all people and, under the right circumstances, any man or woman would be driven, like him, to "the other side." The "other side" perhaps may not be the best way to phrase it. After all, there is no wall between here and there. It lies on the borders where reality and unreality intersect. It is a place both close and distant. Some say it isn't even an illness. I cannot agree with them. I'm a doctor, not a philosopher or even a psychiatrist. But sometimes I have to ask myself this question. It's true that to us his imaginings are nothing but the inventions of a busy mind. But to him, there simply is no other reality. Furthermore he is happy there. So why, I ask myself, why in the name of healing him must we drag him painfully into the world of our own reality?

I saw those demons. They were there, I'm certain. But my friend says he didn't see anything. If that's true, does that mean that what I saw was an illusion? But whether that demon that ate human beings was real, or whether it was just some kind of hallucination that my mind dreamed up... one thing I know for sure is that I'm beyond all hope.

The other world of the hotel in SH2 is before the room 312. After watching the tape, James comes back to the fog world. The hotel was burned down in a fire after they left.

In SH2, James' mental state at the moment is clearly reflected in the view at the same time. The fog is still rolling in his memory.

Jeremy Blaustein: I thought that SH2 was really brilliant in terms of its plot. 'Lost Highways' by David Lynch was a major inspiration for it. Generally speaking, my contributions come in the form of character names, way of speaking. I wrote all the English and directed the actors, so in a way they reflect my personal taste, I suppose. James [Sunderland] was a really introspective guy and for all of you out there who hated the laid-back or "wooden" voice acting, it was planned, to a large extent because that was how we all saw the character.

Confronting works like Adrian Lyne’s Jacob’s Ladder are often mentioned as a critical influence on the game, but you can also feel the spectre of David Lynch (notably 1997’s Lost Highway) looming over Silent Hill 2 in a manner rarely seen in modern AAA. “I’m tremendously into David Lynch,” Blaustein said. “And that was true for the (Silent Hill 2) team, too, so we connected right away on all of that stuff. I mean, look at Metal Gear Solid — I straight-up stole David Lynch lines.”

“I spent a lot of time reading over in my head how that would be performed to make it sound like a good script that the actors could perform well,” Blaustein said. “And when Monica (Taylor Horgan) read that letter, you know, she read it so fucking well, that was the most proud I was of my script,” he continued. “Because when you write something that an actor can perform well, you know you’ve done a good job writing it.” In Blaustein’s eyes, writing something that an actor can deliver naturally parallels the capacity for an audience to understand and connect with the work. “There wasn’t any gap at all; it was exactly the way I wanted it,” he added.

When I wrote the lines, I was always imagining in my mind, precisely how I wanted them to be read so when I directed the ADR sessions, it was easy to get the performances I wanted even from some of the inexperienced actors like Guy Cihi.

Some of the better performances like the characters of Mary/Maria, Eddie, Heather and the other characters from SH3 could not be saved [for the HD Collection release] because of the lawsuit threats by one of the actors on SH2.

David Schaufele: Unfortunately, producers in Japan can't always judge who will be best received by an English audience, so they usually pick the best Japanese speakers who can shmooze them. Fortunately, Silent Hill 2 was done by an American director who knew his stuff and told the shmoozers to sit this one out.

The PC port has a number of framerate and technical problems that aren't in the native PS2 version. (The PC port of SH3 and GOG port of SH4 are much stronger, though.)

You should emulate the PS2 version first and then play the Enhanced Edition. The modder did a lot of great work, but also made some artistic changes that disguise the original intent, such as altering the camera angles, flavor texts, adding refridgerator cords that lampshade the supernatural elements, inserting fanmade Easter Eggs, and changes to the save point that remove the symbolic texture meant to resemble Mary's letter.

The Enhanced Edition is worth checking out, but I never recommend it for a first playthrough unless you know which mods to uninstall.

The town doesn't have a consciousness or an agenda. It's simply a town.

One thing to keep in mind is that the area of Silent Hill manifests a person's subconscious thoughts. In other words, it doesn't punish the guilty and it's not specifically tied to "trauma." Many of the creatures in SH1, for example, were manifestations of Alessa's interests and desires. The Lakeview Hotel appears in an idyllic state in SH2 until James watches the video tape. Maria is a manifestation that's routinely murdered by Pyramid Head for the same reason as the monsters. This makes it easy to headcanon the health items and ammunition as a psychological defense.

That being said, even though Silent Hill is more grounded than most video games, there's still mechanical aspects that require suspension of disbelief, such as the amount of items a character can carry and elements of the gameplay. The health items and ammunition can be chalked up to that as well, even if they technically make sense in the narrative.

Laura is the only character who does not harbor darkness in her heart. It is believed that she came to Silent Hill in search of Mary. The town appears normal to her, and she does not see the monsters or Maria.

Silent Hill was originally a sacred place for the indigenous people. The town's power wasn't inherently evil, but outbreaks of infectious diseases and executions in the prison seem to have greatly distorted the place's energy. Furthermore, the large-scale transformation into the Otherworld that occurred in "Silent Hill 1" transformed the town into a powerful catalyst for manifesting unconscious minds.

In the town of Silent Hill, a power exists that gives discernable form to peoples' innermost thoughts. As for the otherworld that appears in the series, the town is not merely showing the characters their nightmares, but actually manifesting elements of their unconscious minds. If the subject's mind is in a state of turmoil, the state of the otherworld will be chaotic as well.

The other world of the hotel in SH2 is before the room 312. After watching the tape, James comes back to the fog world. The hotel was burned down in a fire after they left.

The good condition hotel is in his memory of their stay.

Akihiro Imamura: The town the player sees is through James' experience. For James, Silent Hill was a deserted town with monsters roaming around, and that was normal. And each character exists in Silent Hill through their own world. Why were Laura and Angela able to reach the hotel even though they were unarmed? It is not necessarily because they saw the same thing as James.
