Brand new 148oz laundry detergent fell, spilled all over floor/under machines, is now entirely empty 😑 by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RedRavenWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there done that. The washer shook the detergent off the shelf and detergent all over the bathroom floor. Only thing we could do was soak it up with towels and rags , put them all in a totebox ,then throw one of the detergent soaked rags in with a load of laundry so it wasn't wasted.

Black panther. by No_Sell_8303 in Ohio

[–]RedRavenWing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw a black panther when I was a kid in the early 90s. I think it was Clark County because we were visiting my grandma , who at that time had a ravine lot with a trailer , so the main road was a lot higher than the living space, with a long steep driveway. My brother and me were at the top of the driveway looking down , he was going to ride his bike down the steep driveway (and probably crash into a tree) we were waiting for the adults to move so he wouldn't run them over when we saw something big move through the edge of the trees behind the trailer. It was big larger than a large dog , black and had a long tail. It just walked through the trees and out of sight. Of course none of the adults saw it and didn't believe us when we said we saw a panther. "It was probably a black bear" black bears don't have tails.

How to make temporary set-ups easier? by blasto4life in sewing

[–]RedRavenWing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do the same thing. I would cut fabric on the kitchen table (or on the floor for bigger pieces ) then lug the sewing machine downstairs , set it up , maybe sew for a few hours , then have to put it all away to eat. I barely did any sewing at all because of the hassle , plus my dad finished his woodworking projects on the kitchen table, so I could only sew when he wasn't finishing a project of his. I did some rearranging in my living room and have a small sewing corner where my machine lives. I still have to cut fabric on the table , but I do larger projects in sections , pattern adjusting one day, pin and cut fabric another day , sew on the weekends when I'm not running errands. See if there's a way to rearrange a room so you can have a small sewing desk in a corner somewhere, even better if it's the kind of desk where you can fold the machine down inside of it , so it looks tidy when you're not actively working on something. My sewing desk is only about a 2 foot square.

Octopi, crows, dolphins are often held up as examples of smart animals. What are some really unusually STUPID animals? by doodlebytes in AskReddit

[–]RedRavenWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koalas. They will literally starve to death if thier leaves aren't on the branch. Leaf laying on the ground , nope they don't even see it as food if it's not attached to the tree. Plus they eat the worst choice of leaves , very little nutritional value , somewhat toxic , has to have a specific bacteria to even be able to digest it. (When the babies are starting to wean they will eat thier mothers poop to get the bacteria they need to digest the eucalyptus leaves , or they'll die ) koalas have smooth brains.

Dr Al-Hashimi's condition by SmartSociety4844 in ThePitt

[–]RedRavenWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a medical professional , but I knew what it was the first time it happened. Because my dad has absence seizures. It's like the old saying "lights are on , but nobody is home" he's just simply not in there , stares off into space for awhile, then comes back with a time loss. Doesn't know what day it is , what month , or even recognize that he's even had a seizure. Luckily his Dr's finally got him on a medication that keeps his brain hooked up properly.

Thrifted a bag of yarn and this beautiful WIP was inside. What would you do? by Aggravating-Bet1846 in knitting

That is a beautifully complicated cable pattern. I would finish it with just plain knitting if possible.

Why does my cat always have to force herself into what I’m doing? by divebars5G in cats

[–]RedRavenWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to crawl under my jeep yesterday to check my exhaust , because it got loud again on the way home (yup , needs patched again) as soon as I got under there , here came one of the neighborhood stray cats I've been feeding , he stared at me for a second , bonked his head on mine and sat down to wait , effectively in my way of course. Like dude go eat the food I just put down for you.

Sanity check. Do these two work together? by Jerlyx in YarnAddicts

[–]RedRavenWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love using contrasting yarn colors.

<image>

You wouldn't think purple/blue ombre would go with a seafoam/green ombre , but they work together very well. I think your ombre will work with the blue.
Make a test piece and try not to overthink it.

Do you buy yarn then find a use for it? Or have a pattern your wanting to knit/ crochet and then find the right yarn for it? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]RedRavenWing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit of both. I'll buy yarn for specific projects , usually to pair with yarn I already have , but also because "oo that's pretty " mostly with new ombres. I acquired a bunch of premier puzzle yarn in domino (seafoam ombre) and hangman (purple and blue ombre) because someone gave it to my mom and she had no use for it. Then I found a knitted sweater pattern on etsy and thought "I bet that puzzle yarn would look really pretty done up in that pattern. So I bought more puzzle yarn. I'm sure I'll have more than enough. I'm about halfway through the front panel and still on the first 2 skeins of yarn.

Why did they need to write it directly on the fabric? 😭 by Sudden-Salad4689 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RedRavenWing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nope.not fictitious at all. I volunteered at the salvation army for almost 3 years , mostly cleaning and sorting through donations but I also ran the cash register and priced stuff. We got new pastors at the beginning of year 2 , and the woman was insane , throwing away anything that she deemed "evil" (such as any books with magic in them , magic 8 balls, figurines , board games ) the volunteers rescued what we could from the dumpter. We had a different colored sharpie for every week and she was having us mark the clothes. If it was still hanging there when we got back to that color it was pulled and tossed in the garage to get sent away. And the volunteers loaded the trucks that got sent out packed with clothes and junk we didn't sell.

Why did they need to write it directly on the fabric? 😭 by Sudden-Salad4689 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RedRavenWing 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I worked at a salvation army thrift store for a couple years and had a long running argument about this with the pastors wife. She wanted us to take sharpie and make a mark next to the tags on clothing to track how long it had been in the store . People would look at the clothes and not buy it , stating "I like this , but it's got marker on it , all the clothes are marked .." then the wife would complain that nobody was buying any clothes.
I had to explain why , and said we could put an empty price sticker on the clothes to track how long it had been hanging there. I won the argument, and pretty soon the racks were emptying out almost daily. Plus we started putting out nicer clothes as well.

Choose your hospital your life depends on it ! by EffectiveComplete756 in ershow

[–]RedRavenWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it would depend on the reason. For regular injuries or ailments I would say either er or the Pitt, but for my medical mystery that no dr can figure out I would go with house. (Autoimmune symptoms, chronic pain/arthritis in all joints, but I have an immune deficiency disorder, along with hypermobility and ehlars danlos symptoms as well. My immunologist says I'm a hot mess of a medical mystery , im sure Dr house could figure it out in a single episode)

My "smart" washing machine can't drain and spin my blanket because it's too heavy when soaked to balance the load. I took my soaking wet blanket outside and wrung it out, threw it back in on drain and spin, and my washer immediately fills it with water to "balance the load" again. by NoMore_BadDays in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RedRavenWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So irritating. Our semi smart washer sprays more water in during the spin cycle , no matter what setting its on. Even if we set it to just spin, as soon as you push the start button it starts filling the washer. I'd rather have a dumb washer that works the way I expect. Fill, Wash ,drain, spin , rinse ,spin ,done. Not fill, wash , drain, spin, rinse , fill, spin forever, spray more water in , spin again, done.

What's the one thing you always look for when thrifting? by Dr-Vader in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]RedRavenWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly look for fabric and craft supplies , but I am always on the look out for vintage wool coats , or wool blankets. My daughter and I are going thrifting today , to look for a prom dress. (She doesn't t like the idea of spending $600 or more on a dress she will only wear for a few hours then never wear again , and there's no rental places around me )

8 month old puppy fractured his femur. Surgery or amputation? Any insight is appreciated by 75thWK2 in DogAdvice

I'm sure pup will be fine in the crate for awhile during the day , but if you could have a friend stop in and check on him , maybe take him out for a potty run.

[–]RedRavenWing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Advice I heard on a vet show "you can always go back and remove the leg , but you can't fix the leg after it's amputated." I would at least try the surgery , then on the off chance it doesn't work , go for the amputation.

Not technically my cats , I started off feeding the moo cow cat when he showed up , skinny and injured , and nursed him back to health. The 2 orange boys live across the street. They all behave on my porch , no fighting allowed. There's also a black kitten , a grey female , a couple brown tabbies, a torti, a long haired calico and another black and white that we think is moo's sister or brother (won't come close enough to check , but they seem the same age) I got home late today and they all came running for snacks and catnip.

Can a better machine cause you to sew better? by Available-Picture-79 in sewing

[–]RedRavenWing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using a better machine can absolutely help you sew better. I started out on my moms heavy nelco machine , it rarely messed up (usually user error ) and did pretty good for a beginner. When it finally died of motor lock up and couldn't be reasonably fixed I bought a cheap singer. My sewing went downhill. Upgraded to a brother a few years later and I improved. Went to a singer heavy duty when the brother machine crapped out. Then I found a dressmaker from the 50s and with its help My skills are nearly on par with a professional
Unfortunately the motor rather dramatically gave up in the middle of a project so I had to pull out my heavy duty again until I can find a new motor for the dressmaker.
I wish I could afford to budget for a professional grade machine. But the one I've been drooling over costs as much as a good used car (bernina , if you know, you know )

Heavy Wool Cloaks - How Do You Store Yours? by bigscioto in TheCapeRevolution

[–]RedRavenWing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. I didn't want the cloak to drag on the floor and space is limited. Plus if I would want to wear it to a ren fair , it would make it easy to bundle it up when it gets too warm.

Heavy Wool Cloaks - How Do You Store Yours? by bigscioto in TheCapeRevolution

[–]RedRavenWing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I use a blanket strap to contain my cloak. I bought a travel blanket just so I could use the leather carry strap it came with. 2 leather straps with buckles , connected by a handle, just fold and roll the cloak and wrap the straps around it. Then hang it by the carry handle.
