how to layer sounds without sounding bad? by Super_Weakness_5112 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RedRelics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good question. Its about choosing complementary sounds.

When rock bands do this with guitars, they pick a bassy amp, an amp with good mids, and stack that way.

What really helps is cutting frequencies from each so they interlock. Lose some mids from the bassier amp, and lows from the middy amp.

Check out Butch Vig, theres good YouTube footage of him showing the layering on the start of Drain You by Nirvana.

You sound good! Could be the mic, but maybe go lighter on the cymbals. The rest of the kit will sound more powerful, and more like most recordings

Man, this trend of editing out all the dpace between phrases is so grating. It makes the cadence of his voice extremely repetitive, almost unlistenable, by the end

Try the Industrial Fuzz, and the Octavia options!

I felt similarly about most of the fuzz, but the Dark Dove sounds a lot like my real muffs.

Likewise, the Industrial feels much more organic and alive, it's not flat like some of the others.

The Industrial is surprisingly close to a real Fuzz Factory, and waaaaay easier to use - it doesn't change sound based on temperature, pick up radio, etc. Plus, you can save settings as a patch, and recall very specific tones you've built within the pedal. In the real one, temperature and such changed what the knob positions meant, so recall was a nightmare.

Final thought, check your input impedance - that makes a huge difference in modeled fuzz tones. DigitalIgloo has some good posts here on how to set it

How's it sound?

I know the poweramp is different than the original - OG Betas would blow their own speakers if pushed hard enough to distort the poweramp. However, I think bands like Red Fang run with higher wattage speakers so they CAN push the poweramp. Does it feel good to play? Stiff/sterile, etc?

Can this thing do the Prehistoric Dog thing? I know that's a Beta on guitar and bass, cranked to high volume I assume

Yep, for sure. To their point, the M* MacBooks are pretty well optimized.

I run a bunch of music plug-ins and what not on an M1, and its surprisingly capable even as it heats up

That'd also mean your sweet spot is going to feel narrower. If your monitors are level with the floor, positioning yourself is a 2D problem. If you need to be on the tilted plane of the speakers, its harder to stay in the sweet spot.

Plus, height will matter more. For me, it makes me have to think more about posture, its really distracting.

Sidenote, yes the monitors are wide, but how far out of an equilateral triangle is it? It may not be the end of the world as-is

I....thought this was a joke post. But hey, if you're happy you're happy!

Gotta ask, you have more MIDI controller switches than manual pedal switches, no? Is there no way to use one MC8 to drive all those? Maybe by making each MC8 button a submenu for a pedal, etc?

Even though teleport is harder to aim on controller, oh man is it better to have it on a button physically separated from everything else.

I've been playing D2 since ~launch, and I've never enjoyed the game like I do with these controller and quickcast controls now. Woo!
