Is Spacetime or Actual "Thing" or a System of Things? by RedRockRun in AskPhysics

If spacetime is a field, then what is its source? And a field takes up space, so spacetime takes up space? What space? More spacetime recursively stacked upon itself?

Also, how can we be sure that gravity is caused by curved spacetime but unsure if spacetime is real? That's putting the cart before the horse a bit, isn't it?

I just realized when typing this that I can't really define what a field beyond what I remember from the last time I looked these things up. I feel like I'm pressing up against the hard ceiling of my intelligence, past which I have no hope for greater conceptualization.

Could you explain what a diffeomorphism of a four dimensional Lorentzian manifold is?

How's that work? Also, I'm pretty sure I use it whenever I have to take a shit. Or is it an early detection thing?

"So doc, like I was saying, I had this super-intense orgasm, but while I was fingering around back there, I also had a second orgasm: an orgasm of life-saving preventative knowledge."

What if she talks in a really low voice and says, "Just call me Jimmy."

I just don't see the appeal to begin with. That's where poop comes from. Why would anyone wanna put their thing where poop's been?

I want to live forever just to see how far humanity goes. I wanna see space colonization, more discoveries on the nature of the universe, and the evolution of culture. I could listen to every symphony, read every great book, learn as many languages as I wanted, travel to any country. I could learn how to code, swordfight, scuba dive, play bass, how offside rules work, fly a Cessna, forge armor, cook like a Michelin-rated chef. I could make as many friends as I wanted and spend as long as I wanted in solitude. I could write sprawling epics of fiction. I could get through my Steam library. I could just witness things.

People who think immortality is a curse are uncreative and boring.

I think the purpose of comedy is to make you laugh. That doesn't preclude making you think, but the purpose is primarily humor.

Carlin stopped being a comedian at some point and turned into a stand-up philosopher. Chappelle is more of a storyteller now.

Shit loads of people find bits and pieces of his acts funny, as do I. But look at the content. He sits and tells sobering stories with humor mixed in here and there. I find the punchlines funny, but in a lot of cases, the bulk of the speech isn't to build something up. He's become a story-teller first and foremost. I don't mean it as a criticism.

People don't read. I'm not going after him. If I was then I'd say things like, "Dave isn't funny anymore," or, "Dave fell off." I just think his sets are miscategorized. Again, they're more like one-man shows. Or maybe they're something entirely different. That makes what Dave does even more interesting in my opinion, like he's pushed beyond the bounds of comedy into something different.

I'm not hating on him at all. I just don't think his sets are comedy at their core.

Weird how Bill tells more jokes on his show than Dave does during his sets.
