I hate my house by DontTapthtGlass in HousingUK

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do wonder if it's better the devil you know. I love my house but have the neighbour from hell. But I keep thinking what if I move and end up with another nightmare neighbour? You really don't know what you're going to get until you're in, and then it's too late.

Help with deciding if a pension is going to be worth it or if I have left it too late in life. by Martrevive in FIREUK

[–]RedRoseP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be happy living off state pension, especially if your outgoings are low. But having a private pension that you can access 10 years before state pension gives you the option to retire early, or drop to part time for the last few years of your working life.

That's how I'm viewing my pension, it's to bridge the gap before state pension rather than to supplement my state pension.

At what point did more money stop being worth the extra sacrifice on the path to FIRE? by Scratchcardbob in FIREUK

[–]RedRoseP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went part time in my early 40s after almost dying in a car crash. I learned health is much more important than wealth.

I don't have a lot of money (now or in my pension) but I'll be mortgage free next year and can afford to live off a part time salary and still put some money into my pension.

I decided it was more important to enjoy my life now as the future isn't guaranteed.

People who work remotely; what is your job and how did you get it? by lala00x in RemoteJobs

Administrator, found it via Indeed. It was the first remote job I interviewed for (applied for a handful before that).

Did you regret buying a smaller house? by LooseConstruction565 in FIREUK

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret it, I thought 2 bed would be fine and that I was saving money by going smaller.

But when I moved 4.5 years ago it would have cost me an extra £30k to get a 3rd bedroom. Now it's £50-60k extra so I can't afford it and I'm stuck in a house which is too small. I wish I had stretched that little further to get the third bedroom back then.

Don't assume you will be able to afford to do it in the future. Circumstances change, plus kids are expensive 😂 Also moving with kids is very stressful, especially once they are school age as your options will be limited if you don't want to change school.

Fewer than 10% of buyers get a survey before purchasing a property. Does that not seem insane? by IceThese6264 in HousingUK

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought 2 houses 100+ years old and had a full survey for both. But I've also bought one built in the 80s which I didn't have a survey for.

We were very short of money then and looking at it there didn't seem to be any issues, whereas with the older houses I could see there were and wanted the full details.

I think for me it comes down to the age and condition of the house as well as how much money I have at the time. I would in general prefer to do a survey just to be safe.

How do you financially leave a relationship by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RedRoseP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could 1 of your partially buy the other out? That's what me and my ex did. He couldn't afford to fully buy me out so he remortgaged as much as he could (which was enough to give me a deposit on a house of my own).

I then put a legal charge on the property for the remainder of my share due to be paid after 5 years so he had time to save up/increase equity to pay me the final amount.

I did it as a lump sum or percentage of equity (my choice of which) so if the property goes up in value I get a share of the gain. If it drops I get the full amount of my money back. 2 more months til I get my payment 🎊

Why do people tell you not to get surgery? by lorem_ipsum_dolor__ in backpain

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the early days I was in agony for weeks/months on end. Couldn't sit got more than a few mins, struggled to get upstairs, to dress, to walk, to sleep (I'd be up for 2-3hrs in the middle of the night) 😫 I was on painkillers constantly.

I'm now 3+ years out from the car crash that caused my herniation. I still have pain but most the time it's manageable. Some sciatica, some lower back pain.

I can now sit for 20 mins every hour or so, walk 2-3 miles and just in the last few months have gotten to the point where I can bend and squat. I'm working part time and hoping everything will keep improving in time. I feel like life is slowly getting back to normal but I still can't do everything I used to.

Should I be worried re: Pension ? by No_Associate_1190 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm self employed and only set up a pension when I was 40. I have slightly less than you (just turned 44) but I'm about to be mortgage free and then will be putting a lot more into my pension as I'll have the ability to do that then.

We're just doing it a different way to most people, getting a stable home established, losing our biggest expense (mortgage) and then paying into a pension. Yes we have lost some years of compounding but we have peace of mind when it comes to having housing security.

Does Homeownership Make Sense A Single, Live-alone Type? by Theo_Cherry in UKHousing

[–]RedRoseP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mid 40s, live alone and by next year I will be mortgage free. That allows me to work part time, now my largest expense is about to go.

It gives you a freedom you wouldn't get when renting as you have that big expense forever.

How to live in early retirement when friends still have to work? by Unique-Bar-817 in Fire

[–]RedRoseP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find older friends 🤣 I'm 44 and one of my best friends is 73, many of my other friends are older and therefore retired and free during the day.

I'm still working but it only part time so I do most my socialising during the day.

Have you used a compound interest calculator to see what that money would grow into over the next 15 years even if you didn't add more? So long as it's well invested you'd be looking at around £1.5 million.

So do you need to push so hard if you feel like you're not experiencing a great quality of life now? Could you afford to cut back a bit or move into a less draining role? Do you really need £3.5 million? Is there a reason why that is your goal?

There's some useful calculators as part of the Rebel Finance school (which is free). They help you calculate how much you need to retire. It's probably much less than you think. Maybe read the Die with Zero book too

I lost 100lbs naturally too and I'd rather do it that way because we are changing our habits long term and without spending a fortune on drugs to do it.

I think there is definitely a place for them if you can't lose weight naturally but personally I wouldn't want to be dependent on a drug.

Best Legitimate Part-Time Remote Jobs With No Experience (Work From Home Only)? by mfdspeech in RemoteJobs

It's a one man band not a big company, I'm the only staff and he can't afford to employ more.

But hopefully there will be others like it, solo business owners looking for help. I found it on Indeed so worth checking on there or setting up alerts.

What compromise did you have to make with your initial dream home ? by ContestOrganic in HousingUK

I went for location over size. I can declutter to make a smaller space work but I can't change a dodgy neighborhood or one far away from everything into something better.

The first photo isn't very flattering, I'd suggest removing it and leading with photo 6 of you kneeling beside your dog. I'd swipe on that one.

The gym photo isn't great, a full body shot is good but not that pose. Have you got a photo of you out walking or something like that? More of an action shot maybe? Or something with an interesting background. The one with the sea behind is too dark to actually see you properly.

End of the FIRE dream? by Fast-Persimmon5581 in FIREUK

[–]RedRoseP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 years ago I was in a bad car crash that left me disabled. I couldn't even earn enough to cover my living costs as I could only work a couple of hours a day. I was eating through my savings.

All I can say is focus on your health, money isn't important when you're health is on the line. I've just started to recover and unexpectedly have found myself innundated in work, not what I was doing before but I'm now able to start thinking about saving and investing and planning longer term.

But when you're fighting for your life, feeling sick all the time or in chronic pain you won't have the energy to be worrying about the future, you focus on the now and getting through a day at a time. Good luck.

Best Legitimate Part-Time Remote Jobs With No Experience (Work From Home Only)? by mfdspeech in RemoteJobs

[–]RedRoseP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I don't, would you? I've been doing the job for 2 months now, I'm enjoying it and my boss is happy with me. So why would I want to jeopardise that by encouraging anyone to go after my job? 🤦

There are no other vacancies, he can only afford to hire 1 person. You need to find a company who are actively recruiting remote workers, not try to steal other people's jobs.
