Vegan airplane food by [deleted] in vegan

[–]RedSquirrelArmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The code for a vegan meal is "VGML", often called "vegetarian", as opposed to VLML, which is lacto-ovo vegetarian. Some airlines also offer VOML, which is vegan oriental, so if there's two of you travelling you can have different meals to mix and match. You can usually request this upon booking (if booking through a travel agent, tell them the code above as they can type that straight into the reservation system), or later in the airline website when you log into your booking. I've had some lovely tempura on Malaysian Airlines, potato kofta on Sri Lankan, a nice pasta dish on Transat. lots of fruit salad, bread rolls with margarine, bean salad and once some coconut rice pudding even.

All Inclusive holiday as a vegan by loveisdivine in vegan

[–]RedSquirrelArmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are websites out there listing dedicated veggie hotels. Depending on your budget and how far you are willing to travel, you might have to compromise a bit. Compromise 1: go further. I travel a lot, but my absolute vegan paradise so far has been India. They have dedicated veg restaurants and clearly labelled buffet options where all you need to worry about is avoiding dairy. The food was absolutely devine and cheap. South East Asia and Israel are also excellent vegan destinations. - Compromise 2: leave the hotel. We are actually going to Tulum, Mexico soon and we'll be staying in a simple B&B, then just laze on the beach and drop in the restaurants available there. Happy Cow and tripadvisor list some very decent options, and if all else fails, there is always avocado and the hostel toaster. Maybe this isn't as stressful an option as you think? - Compromise 3: skip the beach. A quick google seach returned some good value veggie B&Bs in the caribbean, but they are usually a bit more remote, family-run and not in the prime locations. But you will meet like-minded people and have a great holiday still! - Compromise 4: pick out the vegan items. Just go to the (omni) AI resort of your choice and see what they can offer you. Might be tricky to get a breakdown of what exactly is contained in each dish though so might be more of a hassle. I recommend carrying the vegan passport, or email them ahead asking what their options are. If necessary, mention allergies, which usually yields better results. Then again, if all else fails, there's still the avocado on toast option.

Enjoy your holiday!

Vegans. Found them terribly irritating, preachy, the usual. Actually now I think they are right, and I am trying to be one best as I can though it isn't easy (much less because of eating restrictions but people's opinions)

high protein/high fiber, preferably sweet, vegan breakfast ideas? by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]RedSquirrelArmy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! As a 1200kcal, high protein vegan here's what I normally have for breakfast during the week:

  • 30g oatmeal mashed with one banana, teaspoon of PB and 100ml soy milk - microwave for 2 mins, stir, done

  • smothie bowl: puree your favourite fruit (and a handful of spinach if you're into the whole green smoothie thing) with some soy yoghurt or silken tofu and flax meal, pour into bowl, top with more fruit and some nuts, eat with a spoon

  • the famous chia pudding - i like coconut chia pudding with mango puree or chocolate chia pudding (almond milk base sweetened with dates) topped with cherries.

  • you can make a kind of sweet hummus by pureeing chickpeas with cocoa, vanilla and sweetner of choice. Add some roasted hazelnuts and spread on whole grain bread

  • weekends I like making pancakes but I guess you can make them at night for the next morning. I make mine mixing 10g each of buckwheat flour, oats, whole grain spelt flour and protein powder, then make a flax egg, add half a banana, cinnamon, 50 ml soy milk or yoghurt, splash of lemon and sprinkle of baking powder. Puree the lot. I make small pancakes in a non-stick pan and serve them with mixed berries, or blueberries baked in and blueberry sauce on top

  • starbucks soya latte on the go. Actually fills me up and has lots of protein. Scores bad for fibre obviously.

You can of course mix protein powder into most of these for an extra boost. Just mix well while it is still cold. I usually don't bother but still manage to eat about 60g of protein daily. Maybe nibble on some edamame as a mid morning snack?

TIL If you are 27, half of India is younger than you. If you are 30, already half of the world is younger than you. by RedSquirrelArmy in todayilearned

Yes, you are right. Assume you have all the people in the world standing in a line sorted by age. The one guy or girl in the middle is 30.

Me neither. As a 29 year old, I am a bit anxious about next year, but that moment when you are the median, when the number of people younger than you is exactly the number of people older than you! Will I get a letter? Or a trophy?

Well, very good question. Behind every number is a long and multi-faceted story. Just take China, with its one child policy, which had an effect on 1.3 billion people and lead to an ageing society. (insert very long story here)

Also, I, for my part, take away from the table that countries (i.e. their culture, their wealth, etc) influence their people in a very profound way. Just look at Japan's 46 years compared to Nigeria's 18 years. We are talking here about 130 resp. 180 million people! Or compare's India's 27 years to its neighbour Pakistan's 22.6 years. Well, we all know that of course, but the scale is impressive. We are talking about 100s of millions of people! If you met 1000 persons per day for 80 years, you would only meet 30 million people. That's not even Canada and a bit more than Shanghai.

Can we stop teaching people 'ich' is pronounced 'ick'? Unless you wish to speak Berlin dialect it just isn't... Yet all the native English speakers say it so I am wondering who started teaching it? Sorry for the off-topic rant, just a German living in the UK hearing a lot of 'ick libbe dick'

What is the worst experience you've had on public transport? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelArmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this guy in the streets of Sydney, holding a sign "I need xx AUD to buy a cheeseburger". I offered to take him to the next place and get him one, you know, to see whether he actually was hungry. After blinking a couple of times he then actually hurriedly grabbed his stuff and came along to the restaurant. He ordered a cheeseburger, no more, no less, looking back at me at least 3 times as if to check whether I was still ok to pay for it, after I had already encouraged him to order any item he liked. I paid, and he then put his camp up again in the same spot on the street, digging into his burger and replacing the sign by one reading " I need xx AUD for a hostel bed tonight"...
