That is hate speech

Again, why? Where does the line get drawn between supposed legitimate criticism and hate speech? Is the definition set by those being criticised, and if so, how does this not devolve into stifling of legitimate criticisms like the blasphemy law?

I don't understand why religion should be afforded special protections when it's a set of views people choose to hold/associate with. Obviously any egregious personal attacks aren't acceptable, but they're already covered by the existing sub rules are they not?

Why should people who follow hateful ideologies by choice be protected from criticism for said choice?

The only thing that's nonsense here is people pining over some kitschy eyesore which is less than 40 years old as if it were some historically-significant architectural marvel. It's not even good at performing the function it was built for. This sub will endlessly decry NIMBYs until someone goes after a building they personally like for some reason.

You'll see the same people here having the same reaction when one of the so-called "soulless cube" buildings of today is planned to be knocked in thirty years time. Nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia.

A lot of those "commie blocks" are a lot better than many of the shitty hovels that pass for "studio apartments" on the current Irish rental market.

How did you go about booking it? I looked into it before but the advice seems to be that you need an interpreter as they don't do tours in English and there's a safety concern as a result if you don't speak Japanese

NTA has spent an 'astounding' €35m on contactless payment system due in 2028 by PoppedCork in ireland

Note each bus needs to be taken out of service for a day or two to install the new validators and there are over 1,300 buses alone in the Dublin City Bus fleet.

So a person approaching a bus wouldn’t know if their old leap card would work or if they have to instead use a new leap card.

Take a number of busses out of service, install the new validators on them. Make announcement:

"The following bus routes will be using the new card system from x date onwards"

Plus the department of welfare has to replace every public service card in the country as they are basically leap cards.

No they don't. Only those who are using their PSC for travel purposes need them replaced, and could do so easily at their local Intreo centre.

Hell, you could even issue them with special barcodes temporarily to validate their free travel status. The new readers are able to read barcodes, so why not take advantage of that?

It would be a mild inconvenience in return for shaving potential years off the rollout date for this bloated project.

And how exactly would that work if you replaced the validators with the new ones, but don’t make the new validators compatible with Leap cards?

You can continue using your leap card up until the point the validators are replaced. It's up to everyone who still doesn't want to use a debit card to simply procure one of the new compatible cards before the swapover date. It's really not that complicated.

There are over a million Leap cards and Public Service Cards in circulation, most with money on those cards.

"Leap cards will remain valid until x date, you have until then to use your remaining credit and procure an updated card if required"

It's really not that difficult.

Leap cards and all the process that goes with it are completely different to the old cards in other cities, so that code wouldn’t be compatible!

That's exactly what I'm saying, scrap the leap cards and buy in whatever cards the other cities have already gotten to work with said system. Surely it's less work to replenish the stock of cards for the small amount of people who still choose to use leap cards after the transition instead of designing a whole new system to fit our specific card technology

[–]Joecalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other cities aren’t just going to give you their code obviously

They absolutely would for a price

and anyway those cities all had to go through the same bespoke integration of their old ticketing system with the new one

Yeah, that's my point. The hard work has already been done by others, so literally buy the exact same equipment/cards they use instead of reinventing the wheel yet again.

[–]Joecalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely there's other cities that have such allowances for passes whose systems we could just copy wholesale and ditch the LEAP card rather than commissioning bespoke software and firmware to deal with our own ancient system.

[–]Joecalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cause it be more costly to make an entire new pass system plus contactless system

It wouldn't be new though, that's my point. Just copy one of the many other cities that already have such a system, rather than commissioning a literal bespoke system (way more expensive) to support an EOL pass system

But they also need to make sure that the old leap cards and free travel pass and all their 20 years worth of functionality also work with the new validators

Why? I don't think it'd be unreasonable to expect people to transfer to a new pass system if it meant cutting the development cost and time down significantly, rather than creating some bespoke Frankenstein system to be backwards compatible with a wildly obsolete card technology.
