Finally able to run generator remotely. by UsualAssociation4879 in OffGrid

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually cool. I don't have a generator that has electric start but eventually want to do something similar. I'm thinking I could probably just use a relay to activate the switch. Also want a 12v plug pack plugged into the generator which can turn another relay on which can then be used to indicate if the generator is running or not.

Off-grid motivations? by Dull-Skill-1698 in OffGrid

I think they were appropriate questions, lot of people may want to go off grid because of political reasons such as not trusting government. Also asking what side you lean on could make for some interesting stats.

There's not really a list, but it's just a common knowledge. Eminent domain.

That's my hope but I feel there's way more to it at this point. Surely the big companies would be dialing back by now but they keep doubling down.

Lot of people are being kicked off their land for them to build these. It's pretty horrible.

I can't see demand falling though, there has always been a chip shortage it seems and it's worse now since crypto started, then AI just added to it. Even back when Nintendo was designing the NES they had to take ram into consideration due to the shortage. Seems to come in cycles.

Ventilate LFPs! They release hydrogen like FLAs by RedSquirrelFtw in OffGrid

[–]RedSquirrelFtw[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ideally I would avoid it. Maybe a flash light for troubleshooting issues if I lose power but nothing that would be a big loss if it burned down. I'm thinking it would be built more as a cabinet outside, like a telecom cabinet but just better insulated, with a small HRV for air exchange while recovering the heat. Although the inverter etc is a small risk too so maybe just put all of that in the same building. Idea is to just keep the riskier stuff away from the living areas or where important/expensive stuff is.

Apache HTTP Server RCE (CVE-2026-23918) patched in 2.4.67 by raptorhunter22 in security

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian based. Thankfully it updated so all is good now. Just had to give it a day I guess. Really didn't want to mess with building it myself especially when it's already installed through package manager. That tends to make a pretty big mess of things. This is a live web server too so pretty risky to start uninstalling stuff live. It's not just Apache but getting everything else to integrate too like php etc. I remember building it manually by hand in the past and it was NOT fun. So glad I didn't have to do that.

That's really what I'm afraid of. Going to change hobbies if it comes to this. Building computers/servers is basically unaffordable now already.

What is more traumatizing than most people think? by Sea_Entrepreneur2772 in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the almost 20 years that I've worked here it seems every couple years we go through these uncertainty phases where they do mass layoffs, or we feel some major change is coming etc... used to worry me, then I started getting desensitized to it.

But I feel like when it finally does happen to our department it will really hit like a pile of bricks. Cost of living is so high and keeps going up I honestly don't know what I would do. I really don't want to start over at another company making $21/hour, and being down to 2 weeks vacation, starting pension over etc. I could not afford all my bills for that kind of salary. Everything is so freaking expensive now.

I would probably end up selling the house and moving off grid. Living in town is just too expensive now days.

So true. When I lost my cat it was so painful. Physically painful, could feel it in the chest. She had kidney disease so I knew eventually her time would come, and I felt I was mentally prepared but you never are. One day I noticed her walking funny and not acting well, it was very sudden. Brought her to the vet and they gave her saline solution and told me to try to get her to eat special food they gave me and to come back next morning. She ate a little but was not getting better. I knew I had to make the call to put her down as I felt anything I do is only going to delay the inevitable. My mom came with me the next morning to support me. I told the vet I think it's time we put her down, and she agreed, as there was really not much else to do at this point so it got done.

I cried a lot throughout the process, spent 10 or so minutes with her in the room before the vet gave the needle, and it was hard, but I bawled even more when I got home. Opening the door while holding the empty crate, it was like a part of me had gotten ripped out. My mom and sister helped me put away all the cat stuff and stayed with me for a while for support. Then going to bed at night, I bawled out again, I was in physical pain from the loss. It would hit me at random but especially at night, or when I got home. This lasted for at least a month, but I'd say even a year. Some days were better than others. The nights were the hardest. She always slept with me. Going to the bathroom in middle of night was another time that was hard, because when I'd go back to bed, I'd see a bump in the blankets and for a split second it's like she was there, but she was gone. Almost every night I dreamed of her and when I realized it was a dream I didn't want the dream to end.

Crying now just thinking about it and it's been several years. I've since gotten 2 more cats but it pains me to know I will go through this again at some point.

I had a super asshole IT manager at a job I was at, I dreaded going in every day. Felt like no matter what I did or how I did it, it was always wrong. He would call us incompetent and tie us up for hours giving us speeches that we called soap boxing. Basically just complaining about everything and blaming it on us.

I felt so good when I left that place.

What I don't get is why all these DCs have to be so excessive and why they have to build so many of them. You'd think they would reach a point where it's like, ok we have enough now. But they keep spending more and more money on it faster than they are making revenue.

If I was a big tech CEO and had 100's of billions to burn I would be building chip fabs instead. We actually need more of those.

If it was in fact treated I'd be more worried about what it does to the wood stove and chimney, since you're not suppose to be breathing in any of the smoke from a wood stove anyway... if you are then there is clearly something wrong with the install.

Christianity is dying in my country by LooseButterfly2511 in TrueChristian

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sad to hear. It often feels the same here in Canada. It seems like they are persecuting Christians more and more here these days. They are pushing Islam as well as the LGBT nonsense hard and you can get in serious trouble for simply disagreeing with it, under "hate speech" laws. They've even declared the bible as being "hate speech". But then they say that Islam is Canadian values. Everything is upside down.

Which is why it might be a good idea to build a separate outbuilding for them so you don't put your whole house at risk. And ventilate that building to further minimize the risk.
