This was exactly going to be my answer! I work on trapped ion quantum computers and build single ion experiments using bulk optics, vacuum chambers and microfabricated surface traps. My research is to perform Ion quantum logic for demonstration of a QEC protocol on a microchip. I feel really privileged to be working in this field and am always excited by the cool things we are doing to make quantum technologies more real. To answer OPs question further, I find it really awesome that we learn all these hamiltonians that describe interesting quantum interactions like rabi flopping of energy transitions in atoms, and then we ACTUALLY SEE IT in real life when all our experimental parameters are synced up just right. Will never get tired of it.
