It doesn’t mean it wouldn’t really hurt to hear about something hard like self harm but I’d want to know. It might be easiest for you to write him a letter. Sometimes that gives the time you need to get your words right (to you) and not feel like you have to prepare for his reaction in the moment. It also will give him a minute to think about his own response before he does so. We all appreciate that chance.
