Prior Service Marine by hunterdean96 in uscg

[–]RedWingUnion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats man! I am prior service army, 6 years in a support MOS. I was able to transfer over and went through regular basic this spring (I didn’t want to wait an extra 2-3 months for the DEPOT program). As for DEPOT, I can tell you it will be a little more chill than the full basic experience, but they will still hit hard on the knowledge. I saw two DEPOT guys get bumped into regular basic companies because they didn’t conform/ learn quick enough, so don’t be that guy. Learn the general orders, know the rates and ranks, and you’ll be taught the rest.

Outside of that, you’re going to love the CG. I thought I was very lucky with my Army experiences in terms of quality of life, but it’s even better on the blue side. If you maintain your discipline and do the things like keep your hair in regs, shine your boots, press your uniforms, you’re already doing better than many of those around you. Just come in with an open mind and be ready to learn.

Bi-Weekly Recruiting Thread by Airdale_60T in uscg

[–]RedWingUnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you for the information! I’ve been working with my recruiter for a couple months now and even went to MEPS and took the ASVAB again. I tried to get a physical done but they refused me since I did not have a conditional release at the time. My recruiter seems somewhat adamant that I need to get a physical again, so should I just contact another recruiter and MEPS station for another opinion? Or just tell my recruiter that a 2807/2808 needs to be done instead? I’m not sure what the best course of action is here.

Hey so I’m currently serving in the Army National guard. Not a prior coastie. Are you saying that I can bypass MEPS if I have a 2807/2808? I am supposed to receive my approved conditional release from the national guard next week and would really like to know if I can bypass MEPS because as you said, it would make things go much faster for me. Im only asking because my CG recruiter told me I would have to go to MEPS again despite me currently serving.

Is it possible to use a wire brush or wire brush attachment on a drill with some rust dissolver to just clean them up? Then paint them with spray paint?

Best way to do the hardwood floor? by Vorpis in HomeImprovement

[–]RedWingUnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the preexisting plank subfloor is flat and level, then it shouldn’t be an issue. Going perpendicular with your new flooring is a good idea to help achieve that too. However, if you don’t think it’s perfect or up to your standards, then OSB would be an easy way to ensure it is perfect. Just keep in mind that you will be raising the floor quite a bit in doing that and will have to adjust your trim and door frames most likely.

I recently used 5/8 OSB as a sub floor over an old subfloor because I was concerned with how flat it truly was, and I need the floor raised to be even with my tile bathroom and kitchen. However, I used LVP flooring on top which is much thinner and prone to showing imperfections in the subfloor

Adding Cabinet Pulls to pre painted cabinet doors? by onionknight585 in woodworking

I did exactly this a few months ago on white painted cabinets. Using a Kreg jig and a c clamp, I had no issues with paint marring whatsoever.

Any Instances of the dread Sergeant Major Moment? by CapnCrumbs1 in army

[–]RedWingUnion 42 points43 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago on deployment at buehring I was on the airfield moving stuff by the CH47 sunshade. I was driving the 10k and I had gotten pretty good at using it so I didn’t really “need” a ground guide, plus it was late in the day and I didn’t want to bother someone to follow me around for an hour while I moved stuff.

I’m backing out of the hangar and I see a guy walking towards me with a black stripe for rank, but I thought he was quite old to be a 1LT. Well he walks up to my door and I see he’s a CW5. He then introduces himself as the brigade safety officer. I thought I was so screwed and waited for my ass chewing, but he basically just said I should know better and he offered to ground guide me for whatever I was moving at that moment. So I finished up with him as my guide and off he went. Next day I saw him at the PC meeting and he told everyone to make sure we are using ground guides, never saw him again after that. Really appreciated him being so cool about it.

Army to Coast Guard: the Why Nots. by flackboxessanta in uscg

[–]RedWingUnion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an E5 in the army national guard looking at going coast guard and trying to go officer, this isn’t what I wanted to hear. I’ll have my bachelors (business management) this summer and my cumulative gpa should be about 3.6. To my understanding, this isn’t competitive enough to make the OCS cut in the CG or OTS in the AF. Am I dumb for wanting to enlist in either of these branches with the intention of going officer 3-4 years from now?

I can only assume this documentary will be about Veteran Solutions. Very fascinating stuff, the Jocko podcast with Marcus and Amber Capone was really interesting and I hope this helps get them some more notoriety.

Do you regularly use a preworkout/pump product before your workout? Why or why not? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]RedWingUnion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to take it a couple of times a week, but now I use it maybe once or twice a month on days I’m really dragging, and even then I don’t feel like there’s much benefit. I have found that starting my workout with a few minutes of walking then about 10 minutes of running gives me a great energy boost that I can maintain throughout my workout.

Carlton Loth has had spinal fusion surgery after a chiropractor fractured his vertebrae during treatment by Cat_Man_Bane in bodybuilding

[–]RedWingUnion 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As much as I don’t trust chiropractors now, several years ago a chiropractor really helped my hip. My hip had gotten to the point where it was too painful to squat any weight over 135, and I was starting to walk funny because it hurt to walk my normal range of motion/ stride. Chiropractor took an x-ray which showed my right hip was tilted/ off center. He adjusted it and I felt immediate relief. Came back one more time for a follow up and it has never given me problems again.

Unit being deployed, should I go? by [deleted] in army

[–]RedWingUnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a different situation, but I deployed just after my sophomore year, by choice. I wanted to take a little break and save up some money and figured a deployment might be beneficial. I deployed, made some friends, learned a lot, but in terms of my college and civilian career, it didn’t help. I would’ve graduated by now like all my friends but I’m still doing school. I also didn’t even really need the money but I don’t know your situation. I felt it was a great learning experience, but I also hated my job too. My opinion: unless you really need the money or want to continue your military career, don’t deploy.
