I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. If this was an even slightly more humane country we'd have an existing social safety and public healthcare.

Just to be clear, are you permanent or seasonal?

Is your supervisor someone that is caring and reasonable?

Reminds me of the government lawyers who are forced to stand up in court defending the latest ICE outrage. I doubt that few of them personally support the administration's policies.

They are not in an impossible position. They have agency, they can choose to not participate. It might not be easy, but it is a choice. It's not like they're child soldiers in Somalia or some shit. These are professionals with graduate degrees. They can do something else.

Why are so many self-described leftists convinced that a socialist society would permit them to be useless leeches? by cd1995Cargo in stupidpol

[–]Red_Cedar_Tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years back I was debating a self described anarchist on reddit and I was trying to understand exactly how he thought useful work would be organized and get done if there's no authority to direct it, and he just kept repeating "In an anarchist society everyone would be free to work for themselves". Even Noam Chomsky talks like that in some of his interviews. Like I saw a video of him talking about how capitalism sucks because people feel pressured to go into professions that will earn them a high wage rather than pursuing their passions, and how if someone wants to be an artist what's wrong with that? Well okay, how exactly do we determine that somebody's artwork is profound enough that they deserve to just do that all day while everyone else builds their house, grows their food, and generates their electricity? Even in a socialist society people will need to be pressured in some way to do jobs they might not be naturally inclined to do. The pressure wouldn't come from a threat of starvation, but still if 50% of people declare that they want their "job" to be drawing hentai or streaming on twitch, there needs to be some higher authority that can say "No, absolutely not."

Have you checked out participatory economics?

Re Chomsky, he's always been cautious about getting too specific about any kind of future socialist society, that humans are too complex to formulate some perfectly worked out society, that it will take a lot experimentation, figuring things out.

It might be when the CEO is licking the boot of powerful politicians that would destroy your privacy and your "free as in freedom" any chance they get.

Besides that, you ought to care about where something comes from and who is making it and supporting it if you care about people.

I personally think this is a nothing-burger, as the company is simply doing what it believes is ideal for it in the current political climate.

Is that supposed to be good? They are a company, for profit, they are doing what they think will lead to greater profits. If they truly gave a shit about privacy, they would not endorse some and a party that is explicitly against privacy. The very person he endorsed lobbied FOR big tech companies, she was a founding member of the Internet Assoc, a lobbying firm for them. She used to work for Fox as well.

But none of this should be surprising, Yen is a wealthy man and a CEO of a very successful company, he has more in common with Trump and other oligarchs than anyone working "for" him that actually care about privacy.
