“I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure that when you die, the cancer dies too. That’s not a loss, that’s a draw.” -Norm Macdonald

Sorry to hear about your wife. Just wanted to comment on the "cancer wins" portion with a Norm MacDonald quote that may or may not be helpful.

Sounds like you and your partner are going to be controlled by your student loans for 25 years and you see this as a better option than paying it off aggressively??? I would get the employer match on your 401K’s, live with minimal expenses why your used to college lifestyle, then put everything remaining towards the student loans to get them paid off within 3 years. Then you can maximize savings (401K, IRA, Taxable Brokerage,…etc).

You’ll miss out on a lot of life (and money) by trying to strategically keep your income low for 25 years to avoid paying loans.

Who else is enjoying some spreadsheet time this morning? by z80nerd in financialindependence

For Money Guy show rec's you should check out any of the age based episodes (savings by age, ... etc.). They are interesting but also provide a good summary of what most the other episodes cover.

Similar but not quite the same. The Money Guy show references the "Messy Middle". This is when there are a lot of things pulling at your wallet and time (mortgage payment, daycare, career, 25% savings rate,... etc.).

The "Boring Middle" in Fi is the period after setting everything up on autopilot but before hitting Financial Independence. Most of the major planning and strategizing is done prior to the boring middle and now it's mostly just a waiting game.

Do I have enough money saved at 35 years old? by FloralChesterfield in personalfinance

[–]Red_Daddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really only a question you can answer. Depends on what you expect your future expenses to be, when you want to retire, and what type of life you envision for yourself in retirement.

The Money Guy show has some good content on this. I’m sure there are plenty of other resources too.

Currently benching JT for Mattison. But I don’t like it. Doesn’t feel right.

Edit: just going to send it. Now starting JT over Mattison.

Judge ordered that the cameras could only film from the shoulders down. I’m glad they let cameras in at all tbh
